FaithWell, I hope I wasn't too ambiguous...what I was thinking is, part of the reason war goes on and on is because people allow it (as you said, "indoctrinated masses.") And the reason they allow it is because they don't understand it. There is this big fog about the reasons, fog about the casualties, fog about the ethics. So I think poetry, which can cut through all of that, is important. It can wake people up. Like I'm thinking of the lyrics, "All we are saying is give peace a chance." That was a powerful mantra for the Vietnam era.In a lecture in Oslo, Julian Assange quoted those words of Solzhenitsyn's that I posted above, and he added: "He was talking about the world of lies." One word of truth overturns the world of lies. If you think about it, it's true: one utterance in a courtroom could determine the outcome of a whole trial; one key phrase from one witness could upset a whole conspiracy of liars.So.....What I'm getting at is, I really value your poem, because it exposes reality in a form that is digestible. It is beautiful to read so it keeps your attention on the problem. I think that the anti-war effort, when taken on by the poets, artists, musicians, can do wonders to wake people up, in a way that regular news reports just can't do (especially when the news is very censored and sanitized.)On the contrary, when the entertainment industry is "militarized," and vixens are appearing in camo in many videos...that shows we are pretty much screwed. "Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws."-English proverbDidn't want to get too heavy here but...well, we are all Caps so far on this thread. We can handle it. Follow your dreams.pippastrelleI agree with your comment completely , Faith. I think poetry, lyrics, etc, can cut to the heart of an issue in one phrase/verse which the public can identify and resonate with. "Give Peace A chance" is one of my favourite songs, and will remain an iconic lyric for years to come, I feel. John Lennon had the gift of tapping in to the collective feelings of the masses thus producing material which could speak for the vast majority of the public , as it were. As you say poets , musicians etc can be an excellent medium for promoting the anti war effort; sanitised, heavily edited News only tells a fraction of the true reality. I tend usually to stay clear of political issues in my writings, for no particular reason, other than personal choice and preference, although some of my writng has been described as dark and morose; I tend to veer towards the darker side of the" psyche" for some reason . I think by understanding and accepting the existence of the darker side we can appreciate and embrace the light more fully and completely. Thanks again for your reply , agree with your sentiments totally.Ping Pong is one of my favs too Faith quote:Originally posted by pippastrelle: I think by understanding and accepting the existence of the darker side we can appreciate and embrace the light more fully and completely.Well said!! A politic,a religion.
a trigger, a boot
mindless intentions,
fuelled by hate,
flawed ideologies,
no vision, no change
interminable cycle
vilify and berate.
****
powerful rhetoric,
vitriolic , acerbic,
indoctrinated masses
soul essences plundered
lost in the quagmire
bloodshed and tears
grief of all nations
