mereiposa | I want to learn more about midpoints, both in synastry and composite. I am fascinated by all the interpretations mentioned in relationship readings. What are some good resources? When I google them I get pretty limited info. I'm curious about how it affects individuals, and also when midpoints interact with other midpoints. Any suggestions? |
comdoc | Hi Mereiposa, I own this classic book, and it's served me well. Includes midpoint pictures. Highly recommended. The Combination of Stellar Influences by Reinhold Ebertin and Alfred G. Roosedale. Available in paperback from Amazon. |
mereiposa | Thanks comdoc! I know midpoints are important because all too often I see repeating signs and degrees show up in my synastry where I have no other planets or asteroids. That's been my cue to look for a midpoint in my chart. Sometimes its an obscure one. So what I have decided is that whatever midpoint may be important in one person's chart may not have the same bearing in another's. For example, Cancer 6 is a repeating degree in people in my lives. I have nothing there. I have union at 8 Can, but my chiron/Saturn midpoint is Can 5. So they probably play a role together, but I am very curious about this. I wouldn't think Chiron/Saturn would be all the significant in the world of midpoints, but in my chart it apparently is. It shows up a lot! And the idea of basic midpoint synastry led me to believing midpoints activating other midpoints probably also plays an important role. I feel like astrology is an onion- so many layers and each time you peel one back, you get deeper to the heart of it all. Another example, my union/destinn midpoint is gemini 15. I have synastry with someone who's mercury is there, along with his sun/venus midpoint. I think our midpoints are probably activating each other in some way, but his mercury being there would make it hard to know for sure. |
yungang_grotto | Chiron/Saturn is huge... http://john-sandbach.blogspot.ca/2010/12/planets-activating-saturnchiron.html?m=1 It's hard to find in depth written material regarding midpoints in synastry and composite, but as you intuitively get a handle on their overall meaning and she'll with transiting midpoints, etc., it's pretty easy to understand how they operate in interpersonal contexts.

Midpoint overlays do seem quite significant, and this is due partly to the fact that they're triggered at the same time and in the same ways by other planets (by square, opposition, conjunction, semi.or sesqui square) in transit, or in your own charts, or in the composite. In this case, clearly, Mercury is involved. But you'll both be feeling activations of those midpoints whenever they are touched off by the transiting Moon, for instance. Midpoints seem to give a sequential resonance, chains of midpoints overlapping tell a story. Their intersections between two personal charts tell a very fascinating one... |
mereiposa | I didn't think about how transits would be affecting them at the same time. Honestly, I didn't really think about transits to midpoints yet at all! So is a square activation to a midpoint similarly felt and interpreted as a conjunction or opposition? |
mereiposa | So, my ex-husband's mc is conjunct my chiron/saturn midpoint. does this mean his personal persona brought lessons to me and helped me learn through my midpoint? chiron/saturn is about learning how we hold ourselves back. I definitely felt held back by him, and his lack of ambition in the career/professional (MC) setting really upset me. Divorcing him forced me to go back to school and learn how to support myself, which has brought me to finding my own ambition and career path through my passion. So though negative, he helped me to see how I was keeping myself from achieving what I am supposed to be here doing. Is this correct? |
mereiposa | one more, I looked at more charts for conjunctions to my chiron/saturn midpoint. I have two daughters, one has Alma on Cap 6 opposite my midpoint and the other has Alma on Can 6 conjunct it. That's significant to me. |
yungang_grotto | Absolutely, you're right on. You know exactly. quote: Originally posted by mereiposa: So, my ex-husband's mc is conjunct my chiron/saturn midpoint.does this mean his personal persona brought lessons to me and helped me learn through my midpoint? chiron/saturn is about learning how we hold ourselves back. llewsacm | I have witnessed the power of midpoints with the last eclipse. Yes the transits are POWERFUL along with these other triggers and you are definitely on the right track as yungang as stated. |

Technical book, but very much worthwhile as comdoc has stated. Very nice reference material! |
mereiposa | Great! Thanks! I think I have an idea about my two daughters' Almas on my chiron/Saturn. Their existence pushes me forward out of my comfort zone to overcome my fears or hangups. Things that would be challenging for me otherwise, I pursue relentlessly because of them. So, a positive manifestation. Right now, I also have synastry with someone who's Sun is conjunct this midpoint. I don't know yet how it will play out. He's very driven, a workaholic. Here's to hoping for another positive manifestation. Do houses have an impact on midpoints? This midpoint is in my 8th/2nd house axis.

Lerena | Off the top of my head I keep finding the 11th degree through transits to composite charts on certain days. On some days I find a bunch of transits from that degree but since I have nothing in my natal chart to activate this degree I have always found it strange that I see it so often. So, I looked at my midpoints and... Mercury/Mars - 11 Aries 03 Sun/Midheaven - 11 Cancer 50 Jupiter/Uranus - 11 Scorpoio 18 Jupiter/Neptune - 11 Scorpio 47 Neptune/North Node - 11 Capricorn 01 Venus/Uranus - 11 Pisces 41 10 degrees is also pretty common: Sun/Venus - 10 Taurus 36 Sun/Jupiter - 10 Cancer 14 (this midpoint conjuncts the Sun in the composite chart for my relationship) Moon/Pluto - 10 Virgo 03 Uranus/North Node - 10 Capricorn 32 Mercury/Ascendant - 10 Aquarius 01 My boyfriend has a bunch of groups with the same degrees. The early 20s seem to be a repeating theme in his midpoints and he also has some midpoints at the 10th and 11th degrees. |
Lucia23 | Mereiposa, my DC is at 5 Cancer. I know so little about midpoints---enough to ask a few newbie questions for confirmation---a midpoint is just the spot exactly between two planets, yes? And do transits or synastry points touching a midpoint play out other than with the conjunction/opposition? (For example, the coming New Moon is squaring my Moon-DC midpoint.) And how do I calculate midpoints on Astro.com? Do I need solar fire for this? (My math is terrible!) |
Lucia23 | Unless I'm all wrong about what midpoints are, looking at midpoints wildly increases the number of synastric "hits" or connections between charts. So I'm wondering about a (hypothetical) synastry where each person's planets are aspecting the other's midpoints a lot, but there are relatively fewer contacts from planet to planet.....how would that be different from a synastry with a lot of action between the planets? |
mereiposa | Well midpoints are the exact middle spot between the two planets, so yes Lucia- you got it! They are activated in synastry or transits, but if it's synastry and someone's planet is on your mp then they are activating your two planets at once. Theoretically though they do not feel it, you do. But I suspect if your midpoint is activated by their midpoint, then it is also activating them at the same time. I just don't know how that would play out. I need to really focus on learning individual charts, but relationship astrology (synastry and composite) makes so much sense to me. Individual charts are huge puzzles! and Lucia, I am not surprised your DC is there! That means your ASC is trine my MC at Virgo 6. Again, why your posts drew me in more than others. I find it hugely intriguing that you can "feel" and imbibe this energy even over miles and internet connections. SO fascinating!
|
Lucia23 | Mereiposa, it's so interesting how we can feel these connections even miles away and online! Theoretically (maybe--again, bad at math here, maybe the odds are against this) person A's planets could be hitting lots of person B's midpoints, while person B's planets could be hitting none of person As midpoints......but then again, synastry is so complicated. I've looked closely at a lot of synastries and I notice that often the expression of an aspect in a close (or tense) relationship between two people will be flipped--each person will express the part of the aspect in the other's chart. I'm not being very articulate tonight, lots going on. But very interested in hearing more about midpoint activation. |

Thats interesting! I love the repeating numbers in your charts. I really think the patterns are so important. Thats why I became interested in midpoints, because I kept noticing patterns in synastry. I really need to think about transits and watching those patterns. I think it's easier for me to think in terms of synastry, because relationships are so interesting to me. Transits relate to the individual's chart and I very much struggle with reading astrology when it is a natal chart. |
YellowGerbera | Midpoints are definitely interesting! Are only conjunctions counted? My chiron/saturn midpoint is exactly opposite of my sun/moon conjunction. I wonder if this has any significance. EDIT: Oh and I forgot to add that my bf's Dsc conjuncts it! |
mereiposa | definitely your sun/uranus and saturn/chiron opposition is significant! a midpoint is the halfway point, so conjunctions and oppositions are both strong aspects that trigger them. If the midpoint of your sun moon is Aries 12, then Libra 12 is the other side of that, and equally a midpoint. I believe the energy is the same, whichever side of the midpoint is being hit... but I could be wrong about that. And your boyfriend's DSC would be triggering both of those points for you.
