It's a lovely day, the sun is shining boldly, and turtle is in her favourite pond on a sturdy log, perfectly content to be alone, but enjoying the presence of other creatures around her.Turtle has very very soft flesh. It's almost impossible you would think for such a hard heavy shell to be housed so firmly on such a soft inside. Someone approaches and she stays in her shell, peeking out her head to see. It is a cardinal, and the cardinal has a lot of happy energy. They talk and turtle stretches her head out a little more. Cardinal tells turtle all about his travels and is a bird with lots to share. Turtle is happy to hear and can see things about the cardinal, even without the stories. Turtle is calm and watches and observes. She feels more confident and trusting of Cardinal so she stretches her head out some more and steadies her perch on the log. Her head is now extended and basking in the heat of the sun. It feels so good. She shares her stories freely with the cardinal an the cardinal shares back, getting perspectives on the realm of the rushing winds and speed, and sharing her own about the cool deep water. The cardinal approaches the log in his fervour and the turtle, still trusting, retreats to provide room on the log, head still extended, only ready to join the rest of the soft underbelly if the need arises. Ever cautious when one is so soft, but appears so hard. Turtles head feels warmed and tickled by the waves of the sun and the caress of the gentle wind, she is happy that cardinal makes it so peaceful and allows her to let down her vigilance in her shell.
They talk like this for days, such different creatures, and both feel a trusting friendship. Cardinal leaves for a long time. Turtle knows the friendship is true, but questions if it were so true, how could cardinal leave without a word beyond just knowing the friendship will remain.. Turtle misses the feel of the warm sun on her head. Partial extention only proves that the rest of her head remembers and never quite warms the same. Turtle retreats. She knows it is time she went into the world underneath to gather the calmness that only the depths can provide.. and turtle, being a water dwelling creature, needs these moments to reflect and renew in comfort. Turtle spends a long time under, lungs contracted, holding her breath and absorbing the muted colours and the moving atmosphere that only the cool moistness can provide.
She knows it is time to emerge, and peeks her now fully saturated head above the surface. She moves slowly to her log and finds solid footing. She rests on her perch and observes. She extends her head as full as it will go and the sun warms her and she is happy.
She knows if cardinal comes, she is welcome and eager to hear his stories, maybe with only half a head extended.. but she can now extend her head herself. Solid in her world and ability to share.

Wonderful story, pix! Time for Fishee Moon to head for those cool depths and join Turtle..... perhaps later I will have the strength to swim to the surface and emerge into the Sun again.....

Cardinal can also mean capricorn as in acoustic god.

Of course it can, MG (though I'm not sure that I'm story material - then again I am fairly airy like a bird, but not so happy as this Cardinal seems to be. Sounds like a Libra or Aries.).

Pix,

Seems like there would be more. Turtles are nice to read about.

love this, bravo

but that turtle (a.k.a. Scorpio) has way more balls than is evident from the story so far.
I'm betting the turtle has wings and doesn't even know it- capable of flying higher than all the world's cardinals (I'm talking birds now- no insult to the 4 cardinal signs)
yup- flying turtles, aviator helmets and all..
the world is a magical place.

Swimming is as freeing as flying.

good point, AG.
It was very "airy" of me to miss that by assuming everybody wants to soar across the sky.

my apologies.

No apology necessary, of course. I've always loved swimming, and I can literally amuse myself for hours in a pool just floating or engaging in one of my infantile water games. I grew up with a pool in my backyard.

Pixie, that was amazing! As I was reading it, I began identifying with the characters in relation to my own life. Thats really inspired me. Thankyou, it made a lot of sense

Thank you I am glad.
That's why I wrote it ( and am formulating others)
To answer in a simple, parable type way the reasons behind some of our silences and the way it can get better.
Glad you identified..
Turtle is an analogy, hard shell for a reason.
