Astro.com explains this transit in the following way:

~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a time of considerable tension and difficulty in your relationships. Love relationships often cool off and may even break up altogether during this time. You may discover that a love affair wasn't what you thought it was, a rude awakening after a period of lovely illusions. Or you may suddenly lose interest in a relationship that had seemed perfectly viable up until now. Of course, the other person may be the one who leaves you.
Aside from love relationships, there is a sense of tension and a feeling that it is somehow more difficult to relate to people. You may feel that any sort of relationship exists at the cost of your freedom and sense of individuality. Relationships seem to be more trouble than they are worth.
Another effect of this influence may be that "circumstances beyond your control" seem to get in the way of an existing relationship and force it to break up, even though neither of you wants this to happen. But this is almost never what is really happening. Usually one of you has a conscious or unconscious need to withdraw from the relationship, and you subtly maneuver circumstances to make it break up. Or you may be testing the relationship to see how much it can take. A good one will survive and be stronger.
Every relationship must be an honest expression of yourself. But we often get into relationships that have little to do with our true selves, usually because of fear, a need for security, or a sense of personal inadequacy. Relationships sometimes simply outlive their time, and these are the ones that will suffer and perhaps die now. They are at cross purposes to your pursuit of life and self-expression.
Loneliness is a problem at this time, because your need for relationships and your need to be yourself are equally great. Instead of working harmoniously, as they should, they are in conflict. But consciously or unconsciously, the need to be yourself is the greater at this time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

I’ve been dealing with this transit for months now, and my experiences definitely confirm the description above. Fortunately, I’m getting near the end of the transit now, but I thought I’d share my observations on it with everyone in hopes of helping others through it.

For me, life circumstances have added to the strength of the transit. It wasn't just internal feelings within me. My finance recently had a change in work situations that’s forced him to work long hours, and he’s struggling financially, and of course being the Cancer he is, money issues make him grumpy and emotionally unavailable. Which of course, adds to my loneliness and sense of disconnect, as typically associated with Saturn square Venus. It also made it easier for me to wonder “Is he really right for me?” And the timing couldn’t be worse, because we’re getting married in less than three months. I’m not sure if the transit is always accompanied by life circumstances that either trigger or exaggerate its effects, or if it’s generally more of an internal struggle. But I can vouch for how painful it is.

So, the first thing I’d like to make very clear is this transit by no means spells out the doom of your relationship. It simply indicates a time of internal (and maybe external) conflicts you will have to deal with. Your partner will only know about them if you make them evident.

For me at least, my perception of my partner was altered during this transit. I found myself looking at him and seeing more of what he lacked than of what he added to our relationship. His faults and flaws stood out far more clearly, and were easier to focus on than his virtues. In my opinion, these faults and flaws, while present, are by NO means deal breakers, but during this transit, they seemed huge.

I think Saturn square Venus alters your way of perceiving your relationship for a time – it gives you the “glass half empty” perspective. Most people in love tend to wear rose colored glasses when it comes to perceiving their partner. This transit not only forces you to take off those glasses, it gives you a pair of dark, blue gloomy glasses to wear in its stead. It is important to remember that this perception is not reality, it’s just your way of looking at things for a time. You can and will see true things with your altered perception – your partner’s flaws are indeed real, but those flaws are probably not as serious as you feel at the time.

I think this transit is a lot like Mercury in retrograde, in the way it affects you. You go through a painful mercury in retro and you might assume you have NO ability to communicate with your partner – right then and there you might call it off. But, was your issue really that you couldn’t communicate ever, was it that you simply could not communicate in that moment? So, as a veteran of Mercury in retro, you learn to kind of sit it out, and not make any hasty decisions until after the retro period passes. Saturn square Venus is the same, in my opinion. For a time, you’ll wear dark colored glasses, and see all of your relationships as shadowed and imperfect. You’ll see flaws you may not have noticed before. But this time will pass, and once it does, you’ll be able to look at your partner with those beautiful rose colored glasses again, but this time you’ll know and love more of the REAL person. And when you say you love him or her, your words will have that much more weight, because you’ll be able to say them knowing full well that your partner is flawed and imperfect. If you let it, this transit will teach you to love more deeply and truly than you did before, but you have to be strong, and not let yourself react to your rather bleak view of reality.

My best advice to you is to sit, and accumulate all of the information and observations you absorb during this transit, and analyze them all at the end. Perhaps at that point, you’ll realize your partner is not for you, but most likely you’ll find yourself in the same place I am. After months of dealing with this transit, being confronted by all of its harsh realities, I can say truthfully that I feel my fiancé is perfect for me, despite his flaws – or even because of them. : ) After all – I’m human myself, and far from my own ideals of perfection. My dear Jerry is truly beautiful in my eyes, and like a diamond his flaws only make him more brilliant and lovely to me.

Hugs and love to all,

Isolaede

Thank you. I'm experiencing the conjunct and not the square so it might not apply to me, but your words were comforting for anyone experiencing any difficulties in life in general.

I went through this square 3 times last year. Finally finished end of 2014, together with my relationship.

It did for sure take off those beautiful rose colored glasses with Saturns last pass, but it also hurt to say the truth.

I guess it just wasn't meant to be afterall :/

Sounds like that I went though, only took a day for me to realize I am free from a lot of BS now.

Bumping this thread because I'm having a hard time with this transit.

I have a Venus and Mars conjunction in the 1st House natally, and now Saturn is squaring them both.

I am having an IMPOSSIBLE time. My grandfather died suddenly last month, right around the time this transit really kicked off for me.

Worst, though, my boyfriend and I broke up last week. Nothing was even wrong between us, but we've been long distance as I've been working out career things In europe (he was supportive of this), and he got tired of the distance as well as stress in his own life making him back away from the pressures of a committed relationship. He wanted us to be together, but not with any label or commitment (and isn;t sure anymore if he wants kidsbecause of the stress in his life), so I broke it off because I can't handle being in some kind of loose, noncommittal thing with the guy I still believe to be my soul mate. For Me, THAT is too much pressure, and I need these things to be concrete. Decide about kids later, fine, but being in a relationship with me shouldn't be so hard. (He is a cap sun, Scorpio AC and Venus, Virgo Moon and he has been very badly hurt in the past).

He's sent me tons of messages about loving me and waiting for me and missing me over the course of the week. I'm so confused about why we are not together. He's going through his saturn return (transit saturn is smack on top of his natal Saturn right now in his 1st house), so I'm not sure if all this means we are just not right for each other - even though we BOTH have been happy and in love...

Ugh I just need to get through these next few months. To top it off, my career is a serious roller coaster and I'm ridiculously homesick for my family in the states. When does this end?!!?!?

I've been going through this transit. Saturn is in my 10th house, passing over my MC.

My career has been hurting the most. I've put in probably 20 job applications but haven't heard anything back. My friendships have been suffering, mostly because I don't have the money to go out and do the things I once could, with them. It's a very lonely transit.

It really sucks. I feel like I was super bubbly and excited about life just two months ago. I feel like I have aged at LEAST 5 years in that amount of time. Everything I do now has seriousness to it. I'm constantly worried about what the RIGHT thing to do is. I miss having fun.

Can't wait to get to January 2017. This is done for me. This year = ...........

This is a horrible transist I thought since I have it in my natal it wouldn't be so bad. But that's not the case how long does this transit usually last?

Several months, depending on Saturn's speed, retrogrades, etc.

The above interpretation from astro.com was actually authored by Robert Hand and is from his book Planets in Transit.

The purpose inherent within this transit is to do some hard searching within ourselves as to what matters most to us long-term apart from temporary gratification of feelings. This can feel like our heart gets put on a shelf during this time, or that it goes cold, but this can be mostly neutralized by making sure we maintain proper hormone balance and heart function.

The purpose is in structuring our relational lives in such a way that we get both what are hearts truly desire and that it is real and grounded in willingness to commit and sacrifice lesser things for what really matters.

It is a test of heart-level values and investment.

I went through this transit last year. And it'll happen again soon enough during the year, since Saturn is in retrograde right now.

Thank you @Kannon for the interpretation. Definitely important lessons there.
When I went through it, I was generally dissatisfied with my relationships, but nurtured two strong ones.
Like Kannon said, you can go cold, but to me, it's more like distancing yourself from relationships that aren't healthy or beneficial to either party. So, it seems cold(?) It was also a raw time emotionally.

Bump.

Back at it again. With Saturn in Rx, it's back to squaring my Venus in pisces. I'm very aware of where I lack (in all types of relationships), issues with finances (bleh) and more.

But of course, silly pisces Venus that I am, I'm fixated on one particular aspect the transit, atm. Meeting someone under this transit.

i have been wondering about this aspect for some time, and not looking forward to it.
im an Aries Sun,Mercury,Venus and Mars and wished Saturn stayed in Saq forever lol but now it is almost in Cap and im dreading having it square my Aries stelium.
i am also concerned since Pluto will be squaring them at the same time more or less, and possibly Jupiter(3 years) for a brief period of time.
my thinking is that these transits will def bring something.
did anyone go through these transits and what were your experiences.
any thoughts are welcome.
