last night i met(in the dream) a wonderful man who led me behind the walls of a big manor house to a world behind the world. many magical goings on, most of which i think i understand...but a recurring feature of this dream was venturing out into the gardens and finding abandoned kittens - everywhere! i couldn't even keep count of them. some were little orange tabbies (like my own cat is) - some were chocolate brown, a very unusual colour for cats! some were obviously runts and many were kind of wet and messy. i managed to collect two of the orange ones but just didn't have enough hands to rescue all of them as i had to keep moving for some reason.

at the end of this dream a group agreed to "initiate" me and halfway through the ritual my task was to call up the devil, or "recall" him. i answered with a firm NO and they metaphorically coughed me up and banished me. i was relieved at this...

The only thing I can think is that all of the kittens represent new possibilities in your life = the different colors, patterns. The ones that were runts and wet and messy, perhaps are possibilites that would not be good choices for you.

Perhaps the man is showing you, "look, you have all these new possibilites and opportunities in your life, make sure you take the good ones and make the right choices" ~

The devil thing is you confirming that you are going to make the right choices

Anyway, you said that this dream was an initiation of sorts, and so all those kittens, some wet (think wet behind the ears= not grown/not fully evolved) and some rare brown ones, well, these are aspects of the Kat that is you.
