One of the best direct experience based spiritual and nonphysical type books I have ever read, was written by my late friend, Rosalind A. McKnight called "Cosmic Journeys". It chronicles her volunteer work with well known OBE author and consciousness/sound researcher Robert A. Monroe back in his Whistlefield research lab.

Rosie was a natural explorer of the nonphysical states and levels of consciousness, and stayed on with Bob for a number of years.

Anyways, I especially recommend this book for any of those interested in topics like out of body exploration or the like. Rosie's main guide/helper who Bob humorously labeled "Ah So" because Rosie had a slight Asian accent when he was speaking and because everything he said was always so deep, holistic, and enlightening (like, "Ah so, that's what that means!"), speaks on the different levels that are connected to the human energy system. ("Ah So" refused to give an earth name when asked, and Bob wanted some kind of label for him to refer to him).

To sum it up, it's like we have 5 major bodies (and 7 major energy centers). These 5 bodies range from the slowest vibratory level of the physical, to a faster vibratory octave above--the "etheric", to an octave above that--the "emotional", to an octave above that--the "mental", and to the fastest vibratory level--the "spiritual".

"Ah So" didn't seem to be a big fan of classic out of body type phasing, because as he outlines, what is really happening, is that with classic out of body experiences, the Soul is shifting their focus/perception/perspective to the "etheric" level of their energy/consciousness system, which while faster vibratory than the physical, in the grand scheme of things, is quite limited and loaded with a lot of human-physical baggage residue like fear, sense of separateness, etc. (He said it also left less protection for the body in relation to nonphysically focused ignorant or dark souls that try to attach to people to either find a material "home", or try to negatively influence them).

Ah So more so recommended phasing to the vibrational levels within that correspond to the emotional body or "higher" (faster vibratory) than the etheric. You don't get that super visceral, vivid, and "real" feeling of a "separate body" sensation as you do with the classic out of body experience, BUT, your perception expands and clarifies more.

Some of us have a hard time phasing to the etheric because when we get still or meditative, we naturally phase to the faster vibratory levels of either the emotional, mental, and/or some rare ones of us, occasionally the spiritual.

Trying to have a classic out of body for these types of folks, is in a sense, like going from being in the 5th grade, and deciding to go back to the 3rd grade for some silly reason. Or like going from riding a bike without training wheels just fine, and putting training wheels back on the bike. Not really necessary, so even if your physical personality wants such experiences, your Soul and Spirit levels are like, "nah dude, you don't really need em".

When T. Saturn and Mars were going through my 1st House, and T. Pluto was squaring my N. Saturn (faster moving ruler of Sun, Mercury, and Venus), I went through an unusually slow vibratory for me period/cycle, where I was more enmeshed in ego and lower energies (and interestingly had a raging sex drive during this period which is unusual for me).

Years before, I had always wanted to have a classic OBE but could never have one. The two ones that I did have, were during this above unusually slow vibratory cycle, and I think my Expanded self gave me these experiences in order to confirm what Ah So had taught.

When people go to the Monroe Institute, many are attracted to going because they think, "Oh, I'll have a classic OBE" there. The people at TMI on the other hand, try to discourage this notion and expectation because there are many different ways to explore and perceive the nonphysical levels and getting stuck on classic OBE is rather limiting. But people like these, because to our human perception and limiting belief systems, they feel and seem more "real" than other, more subtle nonphysical experiences.

When I go into deep meditation and ask to commune with the Source and the Co-Creator level, most times, I can barely even consciously perceive any communication back beyond the feeling level. They are at such a fast and expanded rate of vibration, my conscious human mind has a hard time tuning into and translating anything I receive. It's like fleeting impressions.

On the other hand, it's much easier to communicate with recently deceased humans. However, not particularly advisable much of the time because in many cases, these aren't necessarily any wiser or more aware than you are (and hence, they can give you misinformation or ignorant beliefs/perceptions etc), unless they happened to have been unusually old Souls when in physical.

Then there is the issue that there are negative nonphysicals and ET's that sometimes masquerade as deceased loved ones, famous dead celebrities or well known former humans, "guides", or the like, to get your ear and try to start influencing you towards the negative and limiting. The New Age is filled with many channelers, mediums, psychics, etc that connect more to these types than to real guidance (and again part of this is because real guidance is much harder to tune into and clearly perceive).
