In my profession I have come to know one quite profound truth: when people are very ill, on life support and likely not going to survive, they are a bit more than "un-concious." They are without soul.

I have often refered to it as "hanging on by a soul toe," cause this is what it feels like to me, intuitively. The soul has not completely departed, but it is definately somewhere else...and there is certainly a lack of conciousness as we know it.

I observed a second profound truth the other day when a 17 year old heroin over dose died on his 50th day of admission.

I have noticed in the past that when these very critically ill patients on life support finally take a turn for the worse and get to the point where we either have to "code" them or tell the family they are actively dying, the patients open their eyes! They are still breathing per the ventilator and often have a measurable, small but measurable blood pressure and a definate heart rate...but the eyes that have been closed, open...

And their eyes are black, vacant, without soul...

As a clinician, I know when brain death begins to occur, the pupils dilate.

As a mystic I ponder do the eyes open so as the path for the soul to have it's final flight?

When Daniel began to go swiftly downhill the other day, his eyes suddenly opened...black, vacant, no life, but his heart still beat, slightly and we still provided him oxygen with the ventilator and there was still a bit of blood pressure....but he had left...and I felt his soul, spirit and conciousness leave, and move to a position behind and above and to my upper right and........smile....

i often personally disagree with some of the views you express in other threads and choose not to contribute. but with this one i have a belief on this subject to which you have just provided me with some further insight and understanding. and i thank you for that.

but mostly what i do want to say to you is - thank you for the work that you do. i don't know if i could or couldn't do it - but, just, thank you that there are people like you who do this. it's just - really - something else.

I wrote this on another thread somewhere.
My mum "left" two days before she officially died.
I knew the time she left.
The next two days I sat by the bed looking at something that didn't resemble her but just looked like an overcoat she had discarded.
I just watched her "machine" go through the shutting down process but she was definitely somewhere else.

Peace~~~you are a fine and beautiful soul. Often as humans we disagree, but as souls, ever inter-meshed within this fabric of life, we are sitll one....

Bunnies~~~I remember your post, maybe even one my my threads....and I SO appreciate you for knowing and feeling that there is way more to life than what appears at first glance...

I have a problem with "death" lately.

I have studied it, I have known it,(sometimes on a daily basis) I have yet to experience it, but what I do know, is it is not the end...not just yet.

"above and to my upper right" very interesting, hippichick.

My mother was in a deep coma for 5 days after a burst aneurysm, so I've spent some time exploring the spiritual aspect of the condition.

not that I have any answers but .. My starting off point was simply that a coma was more than sleep but less then death. As I understand it, in sleep, the astral/soul body and the ego/consciousness, leave the physical body (although not a complete disconnect as in death) but that the etheric body, the life force, remains behind. Is a coma the soul and ego otherwise occupied, as in sleep, but, unlike sleep, the etheric body is just drastically diminished? I'm still not certain.

The idea that we relive and reexamine our lives immediately after death is a common one - you know that "my life flashed before my eyes" thing. I did feel strongly that this first stage of death was already in process for my mother while she was in the coma. I also felt this with my grandfather who was in a very light coma for a few days before he died.

As PeaceAngel said, bless you for doing what you do the way that you do it. It must take a lot of strength.

Tink...

Thank you for your contribution, and what a beautiful reply!

Personally I experience intuitive "things" to my right, about 3 feet out, so it was no suprise that I felt Daniel there.

I mentioned on another post and in my personal life that it is quite profound to notice an individual sleeping and an individual in a coma....quite the similar appearance.

The Yogis call it the little sleep, or something like that.

And I send blessings to you and your mother's condition.

This life is not easy.

Anybody who says it is, well.........tisk, tisk...

AND......I just want to know what else is there?

Cause I feel, something more.

blessings to all of you

T~~~

You know, you just made me think. Do you think the other thing that is "more" could be a reabsorption of the soul back into God? Like, you will never feel them completely leave, but you may even feel them stronger as their energy is reabsorbed. This is just a thought, but to me it makes sense. Energy is neither wasted nor destroyed - only transmuted. A very poignant thread. I like this quote from a Pearl Jam song "If our lives became too long, would it add to our regret". It's about how nine people died in a concert of theirs, and they will never forget until the day they die themselves - but this feeling could only increase. I mean, how do you live with something like that? But, like you said, there is more to death.

Heaps of Love,
Dean.

My Friends...

I have been wanting to reply for a few days, but have been so busy at work and I apologize.

I was at my bfriend's the other eve and he presented me with a big book of Alex Grey, his photos and written information about each of the images in the book.

I was mesmerized.

I have alway been an Alex Grey fan, (discovered him with the Tool band's images) and can appreciate his knowledge of humanity...of anatomy and spirituality.

This book blew me away so much, my love gifted it to me.

There is this image in the book one of Grey's prints titled "The Soul Finds Its Way" (and I apologize I can not find a good online image to post,) but the text that accompanies the image just blew me away.

It blew me away as a nurse, a human and a mystic...because all of the things in the following statement move me, and I have felt for so long..

Put into words.......

Imagine that.

********

"The stages of transforming conciousness during the process of dying have been described extensively in Tibetan literature, and and following comments are based on those teachings.... The essence of five elements, earth, water, fire, air and space, keep the physical body alive. Dying is the dissolving of those elements, one into the other, which manifests with definate external and internal signs. When the earth element dissolves into water the body becomes weak and heavy with the feeling of sinking, the light drains from the eyes, and internally there is some confusion and a shimmering miragelike appearance to things. Then the water element dissolves into fire. The tongue becomes exceedingly dry, the body seems to dry up, and we lose sensation of the physical body. Inwardly there is a foggy smokelike appearance. Next, the fire element dissolves into the air or wind element. The breath becomes colder and shallower and the warmth of the body dissipates. We can no longer recognize anyone or anything externally, and internally, sparks of light like fireflies appear. Breathing becomes labored, and finally we release our last breath and the air element dissolves into space. The internal sign is a yellowish light. Increasingly subtle states of mind are experienced through lights of white, red, and black. Next comes the dawning of the clear light, the "indestructable drop that transmigrates" the light of soul realizes it's Divine Oneness or continues to wander and transmigrate."

Wow...

All I want, upon death is a choice..
