Evie has been trying to cough something up since yesterday - I'm not sure if it's one of those foxtail thingys, or maybe she got a hold of a bark nugget and something is stuck in her throat, or what. She's not choking, can breathe fine, she is eating, she's not lethargic or anything, she's just trying to get this thing out of her throat. Should I call the vet, or is there some home remedy I can give her to try and loosen it? Thanks!

Hey darlin',

I'd call just to be safe. You can probably just talk over the phone about it.

Hehe.. kinda sounds like a cat with a hairball. They eventually get them out.. it's just awful to listen to in the mean time.

Tell me about it, it breaks my heart - and I'm concerned she'll make her throat raw doing it.

I wish dogs could talk, if only for the purpose of telling you what is wrong with them.

I do the heimlich ( spelling??) maneuver on my dog all the time. He gets food stuck in the throat if he tries to bark and eat at the same time. Come around behind the dog and put him on his two back legs. Make a fist with your palms. Place one fist on the area you think in where the stomach and breastbone meet. Pull the fist in gently but firmly. You don't want to break any bones. Do it until you think he/she coughed out the problem. This does work for me and my mini shcnauzer. Dont put the dog upside down, this could lodge the object in even more. I used to do this until i read otherwise.

Hi Isis!

How is Evie? Is she better? I'd call the Vet too.

Let us know ~ N.

We didn't end up calling the vet, the symptoms were all but gone by the next day. I'm pretty sure she got a foxtail wheat thingy in her throat when cleaning off Sera (I've seen Sera w/ these things on her coat, and Evie tends to clean her like a mommy would), I guess either she cleared it out or it dissolved. I've talked to some dog owners from the area at the local dog park, and apparently it's not uncommon in this area. We keep the yard mowed so I can't see any of those things in the yard - they must blow over from the neighbors yard. Anywho, we are very relieved
