I received an e-mail from my friend today and it said:

can you please pray for my kitty?

Today, he was taken into the ASPCA to get neutered. When they had operated him, they did not identify the patient. We later found out that they had not only neutered him, but also MISTAKENLY removed all of his claws and did some work on his teeth. He was put on morphine, and in case u didn't know, morphine is given to patients that are in so much pain that they are close to dying. Pictures were taken of him bleeding like crazy, and he was trembling from pain.

Talk about prevention of cruelty to animals.........

Please pray for her kitty. He is home now but still bleeding alot. He is 1 1/2.

Morphine is not normally given to animals- even at the SPCA. There is a slight chance this is used, but in all my years working emergency we didn't use morphine to stop the pain after surgery.

In most cases the animal (especially if given an accidental declaw) was given Ketamine and Valium (or Ace / Torb) both cocktails are disassociatives and pain relievers. Basically, the animal doesn't feel pain and if a bit comes through they don't care (we use the same things on people).

In some surgeries they will also tube the animal and use a gas called Isoflurene. Again, an easy to use gas that has little side-affects. If there was dental work done, chances are the animal received gas because you don't want them to choke when you are doing the dental (again, routine and actually promotes the animals life).

The average neuter for a cat takes about 15 minutes - you cut, pull, tie and glue (you do not go in as you would a male dog or female of any species). The declaw (and I did my own female cats declaw when I worked at the ER vet in Portland) took about 20-30minutes. The dental would have taken the most time.

In any case, once the procedure is done, they get a subcutaneous shot of an antibiotic and then periodic pain relievers througout the day.

Shaking is not always attributed to pain - waking up from the anesthetic (even in humans) causes trembling, rocking back and forth, howling / crying and dilated pupils. There will be seepage for a day or two from the testicles being removed, ooze from the mouth because the gums are sore (similar to a major cleaning in a human) and the sorest area will be those front paws after the declaw. Usually the bandages will stay on for a day or two and then come off.

I am not advocating any surgery (depending on ones belief) but I do advocate telling the truth instead of calling the ASPCA a chop shop etc...

Mistakes are made unfortunately and this kitty got WAY more than he bargained for, but he is still alive and will do just fine. Hopefully the cat is going to be an inside cat (I hate when people let their cats run outside, only to be hit by cars or maimed by another animal) so being declawed isn't going to harm him.

Both of my cats are declawed (fronts only) and they can pick up chapstick tubes, pencils, toys etc... with their paws.

Sorry for the friend, she must be feeling a bit freaked out- but morphine isn't quite what the animal is on.. maybe ace / torb (and torb is an extremely watered down analog of chemical compound - morphine)

My heart goes out to your pet... I have to agree with Moon about what should be done to the people who are responsible... and some other cat didnt get the "right"????surgery and was perhaps neutered? I suppose... and likely because it is an animal hospital they will say oops sorry and that will be all... A short "letter to the editor" of a local newspaper will at least give other pet owners a heads up about that vet.... and bad reputations do impact their profits...

I am a cat nut... and I would rip someones heart out with a blunt kitty litter scoop if that were my baby. With lots of care and attention he will recover, but will he be traumatized... yes, and maybe even as much as the cat lovers here, who are apalled hearing your story... .... keep us posted on the progress... much love... I have to go for a long drive to get rid of my anger at such cruelty... Cats are supposed to have claws! This is how they climb trees and defend themselves... arghhhh!!!!!

"Cats are supposed to have claws! This is how they climb trees and defend themselves... arghhhh!!!!!"

That is a personal decision based on the type of home you can provide for your cat. I love my cats with a passion and both are rescue cats that I rehabilitated. Both had been hit by car cats, with the older one having been abused and thrown out of a moving vehicle.

I choose declawing because I don't need my furniture scratched up. My cats don't go outside and have a big enough house to roam around and still get enough exercise.

I find it to be quite abusive when people let their cats roam the neighborhood and then expect everyone to feel sorry when the poor thing has been hit by a car, killed by a dog, poisoned or is suffering from abcesses because of cat fights.

Right now I am in the process of working with a cat that was obviously abandoned by people that could care less if he roamed about on his own. He's an outdoor cat and I hate it, but I can't bring him in until I gage his temperment, make sure he's neutered and doesn't have any viruses. As for now, I care for him - give him food / water / shelter and lots of petting.

SO it all depends on what we term as cruel.

Point taken... hats off to you for caring for the fortunate cats you have called to you. You must be a wonderful person!

I just want to say.. a cat allowed to experience his full catness and explore the garden et all, is at a distinct disadvantage with no claws... they were born with claws ... they are hunters by nature and when chased by larger animals they need to defend themselves... they aren't ornaments... they love to feel the grass and wind and rain as we do... and freedom to run too... roads are crap, but that's the way it is... It isn't the cat. usually its the driver going too fast. I lived in the country (UK)and country roads seem to be considered race tracks and speed routes for rallies...

Sorry, I still believe declawing IS a big deal... for the cat! a lot of pain and stress ... a long healing process... and then some degree of vulnerability after... love to all cat lovers out there...

Whether they let them roam or not it doesn't matter. I'd still feel sorry if an animal were to be hurt.

What a stupid statement. What are you satan or something. sheesh.

Humans are born with big noses which keep them from breathing right, small breasts which they enlarge and missing limbs which they purchase artifical devices to aid them in human function. Yet they get corrective surgery or surgery that they feel will help them with the quality of their lives. By using some people's philosophy, we really shouldn't do any procedures on cats (even spaying or neutering) because it makes them less cat like (it does... actually because they aren't allowed to explore their feline sexual side).

Sure cats love being out of doors at time and I also have tons of family and friends that live in the country. Many see those animals as expendable because nature takes it course and it's nothing to see an squished cat on the side of the road. The cats over breed, get diseases and then are wiped out- the farmer calls that natural selection.. Well, not my animals.

My cats must be doing just dandy because they do not display any abnormal behaviour characterics seen with animals that are left out of the house all night to fend for themselves, the cats don't pace around crying because they are bored, have no space etc...

My philosophy has always been never to adopt an animal that I cannot provide a good home for. That is why I don't have a dog. I don't have the time or the space for one and it would be unfair to make them live in a house where I am gone all day, with yard that isn't big enough to really play in.

It kills me to see selfish people that live in tiny walk up apartments (especially Studios) with a large dog or if they are gone 10-12 hours a day. How horrid for that animal.

Two days of pain from a declaw is nothing compared to the lifetime of mental problems those animals have from being attacked, left out in the heat / cold or left in a tiny apartment all day.

VL. you are brain dead, that is a fact. When you get a job working as a Veterinary technician (and I don't mean a cage cleaning assistant) then come back and talk to me. I have more than 6 years under my belt along with 2 years of veterinary diagnostics.

If you want to play, make sure you have the facts.

awwwww! how very sad!! It does make me wonder what happened to the other cat that was to received this surgery. poor kitty! ... i would definitely #1 Talk to the place that did the surgery and #2 do the letter to the editor of the local newspaper. Let people become aware. Id that kitty were to have died ... who would be responsible??

While i dont agree with declawing animals, i agree with Pid. There are reasons why people do what they do with their animals. Some people de-barj their dogs. Some de-claw their cats. Its a personal opinion. And unfortunatly, each vet you talk to will have a different response.

Pid said - It kills me to see selfish people that live in tiny walk up apartments (especially Studios) with a large dog or if they are gone 10-12 hours a day. How horrid for that animal.

ORRRRRR .... people who leave their dogs chained up outside allll day long. To come inside the house once in a blue moon for minutes at a time. ... why have an animal??? I had friends that did this, it destroyed me, i tried saying my thoughts on it ... but they quickly said "Ohh, hes a husky, he can take those long cold nights outside, he's been outside his whole life nad has nothing wrong with him. But these people were also the people to de-bark their dog because neighbors complained about him barking at all hours of the night .... you think he was trying to tell his owners to bring him the inside the house?

I have another friend who recently "aquired" a dog from a friends heighbors house. The poopr lil girl,m under a year old, was tied outside all day long. They never saw anyone go outside and interact with it. Never saw anyone go outside to feed or water it. She was suffering ... so he stole her!! I dont condone stealing, but in a situation like this ... i woulda done the same thing. She is just the sweetest girl ... but it took her a long time to come around. She was very, very sky and timid. But with time, she's blossomed into a beautiful, frisky, playful girl.

Anywho - Love and light to your friends Kitty. Prayers and all headed his/her way.

I agree that stealing is wrong, but in some cases you need to protect the animal. I hate seeing animals tied up and not given their freedom. Then again, I am also weird about people keeping birds or wild animals.

I've never been a proponent for debarking. It's said to stop the animal from alerting people and the barking is usually traced to a behavioural problem. We had a next door neighbor that let her dogs bark all night long, kept them confined in the back yard and never spent any time with them. Animal control was called at least 6 times by us, but I have no idea if they did anything after I moved out. Really sweet dogs too.

Sometimes people should never even consider owning animals. They don't deserve them.

The "DECLAWED" Fat cat saved the day...

Bear's out on a limb, fleeing a clawless kitty
Cat proves size doesn't always matter in his neck of the woods
Friday, June 09, 2006
BY PAOLA LORIGGIO
Star-Ledger Staff

To his neighbors, he's a loner, a sometimes-friendly, sometimes- surly senior who spends his days wandering through the woods. He is particular about his yard. Strang ers are not always welcomed.

But last week, Jack the cat be came a hero when he chased a black bear out of his neighbors' yard and up a tree.

Last Sunday afternoon Suzanne Giovanetti was reading at the kitchen table when her husband Dean cried out from the TV room at the back of the house: A black bear had just scurried up a tree on the edge of the couple's backyard in Shady Lake, a private community at the base of West Milford.

Though experts consider West Milford one of the state's most bear-populated areas, Giovanetti sees only one or two of them each year, she said. Within minutes, the 47-year-old graphic artist was up on the second-floor balcony overlooking the yard, camera in hand. She was about 30 feet away from the bear and almost eye-level with it.

That's when she noticed the cat stationed under the tree, sentry- like.

"I thought, 'Aww, look at the little kitty looking at the bear,'" Giovanetti said. But as Giovanetti watched on, she saw the bear cast frequent, worried glances down at the cat, a 10-year-old orange-and- white tabby named Jack. The bear seemed scared.

The bear "hung out uncomfortably in the tree" for 10 to 15 minutes, eyeing the cat who was eyeing him, Giovanetti said. It then inched halfway down the tree, paused, quickly jumped off and ran "like a bolt," with Jack on his tail.

"I think the cat was hissing at the bear as it came down the tree," Giovanetti said.

Jack's owner Donna Dickey, 48, who lives two doors down from Giovanetti, walked out on her back porch to photograph the bear when she heard her neighbor yelling from the balcony.

I panicked when I heard Suzanne yelling about Jack," Dickey said. "I thought, 'Oh, my God, the bear's gonna get him!'"

Not quite. Jack chased the bear into the brush and up another tree about 15 feet away. He then stood watch for a few minutes before Dickey, who had run to Giovanet ti's porch, called him to her. The cat sauntered back toward the group, "rubbing up against everyone," Dickey said
