Hi D ,All of our feelings, beliefs and knowledge are based on our internal thoughts, both conscious and subconscious. We are in control, whether we know it or not. Aim high and do your best We can be positive or negative, enthusiastic or dull, active or passive. The biggest difference between people is their attitudes. For some, learning is enjoyable and exciting. For others, learning is a drudgery. For many, learning is just okay, something required on the road to a job. IP: Logged |

Hello D; It me Gypsee. I was very touched at your story, and I have a very similiar one myself. i commend you on your bravery to share, that takes courage my friend. Just doing that, you will find, helps to lift some of your burden. You are a wise young lady. I don't know about "tiffs' you have had here before, but try to keep in mind that people are only reacting to your words, not "you" yourself, they don't know you. I'm sure you already know that, but I can see where the distinction between the two can be blurry. The question I had wanted to ask you about medical school is this...and I surely understand if you cannot anser it, because it may not be an area that you are currently studying. I woke up one morning and decided I wanted to be a sonographer. I love babies, and pregnancy, and all that. I should add, that I don't really want to "be" anything other than a writer and a painter, but alas, noone is knocking on my door to beg to buy my work, so I must pay the bills somehow. I've bartended over twenty years, and the money is good, but no benefits and I need them. Back to question, So I set out on my jolly way to figure out how to be a sonographer. You know, researching on the computer and what-not. Basically, I could not get a straight anser, one school said I need four years of pre-med, the cirriculum included (GULP) advanced TRIG!!!!! For that much schooling, I might as well become a nurse! I should also add, that I have worked in a doctors office before, but it was in medical records. Not M.A. type stuff. Do you think there is a way around that long of schooling? I would of thought to run an ultrasound, one could do like a 9 month course in tech school or something? Or, have you ever heard of someone, say, apprenticing @ an OB's office to learn the skills, and then simply take a test? Sorry for taking up so much time, I know you are busy. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Have a great day!!!!! IP: Logged |

Thank You D for your reply. I did notice you lived outside the U.S. I was just hoping maybe you might know some sonographers and therefore know how they got to be.I don't think I can do pre-med, to be honest I'm just not smart enough. I know how hard it is, and with the 3 kids and all, I just wouldn't be able to go through all that. I did go to school for 4 yrs. I'm 3 classes shy of my B.A. All three classes are math. My major was psch, then I changed to double major in psch and English/creative writing. I wanted to be an Art Therapist and work with battered women and children. Something very close to my heart. So maybe I can figure something out. I enjoy working with people, helping people, teaching people. Surely there is a job out there made just for me. Sorry to ramble on in your thread about my career woes. I think you are an extremely intelligent person, with a bright future ahead of you. I feel this in my bones. All my best to you! You are a sweetheart. Remember: D can also be for Delightful. IP: Logged |

Yes, I did start a thread to ask lexx a question, she did not anser me, but I think that she may be not feeling well at the moment, and taking a break. I havent seen her reply to other things lately, but then again, I don't go in all the forums, so I can't be sure. But I do wish her well, and hope she comes back soon. And I wouldn't call you, or imply you to change your name to delightful, I was just saying that "D" can stand for alot of lovely words, which I am sure can and do apply to you. I would be interested to know how you got into lexigramming. I'm always curious about how people find their interests. Do you do it the way Linda suggests? I've tried doing in since I first got 'Star Signs' in the early 90's, but I just don't have enough patience to try and figure out all the words. However, I found in here somewhere, that there is some kind of search engine that will find all the possible words for you?? That would be cool, then you just have to put them into sentences. Anyway, thanks for your insight on the medical thing. I wasn't trying to be down on myself, I just know my limits, and even with a tutor I cannot pass the advanced math. I'm still researching the sonography, tho. My friend is an emergency nurse in PA, and she said, "No way did our sonographer go through 4 years of pre-med, keep looking." So I am. And I will come back and chat with you again. You seem like a nice person to get to know. Don't study too hard, and have yourself a great day! IP: Logged |

OHHH! I am sorry, I was mistaken, I assumed (bad word, that one) that you were in medical school. Doesn't matter either way, your still smart. You say your English is not perfect, and maybe not, because we all make mistakes sometimes in our haste to type messages and get our ideas across. BUT, let me say that I did not even know you weren't English when I first read some of your posts, so you are very, very, good at it. Just the fact that you studied all those languages, amazes me to no end. When I was in college, the state I am in, required one semester of foreign language, no matter what your major was. I thought, "okay, I will take Italian, I am of Italian heritage, Italian was spoken in my childhood home, and I lived in Italy for one year, so I can do this." Only to find out that Italian was not offered. My councelor said it was considered a "dead" language. I had to laugh because it was alive and well when I lived there in 1986. My choices were, Spanish, Russian, and "conversational" Japanese. AHHH, but upon further digging, I found out that Sign language would meet the requirement, so that is what I took. It was very enjoyable, and has helped me communicate with people at my work, that are hearing impaired. Still, I am envious of your mind that you could learn and retain all those languages, and you call yourself idle! Ha! Far from idle, even if you did not master the languages fully, you have achieved much more than many could even hope to, don't you know that?? I am curious, is English part of the curiculum in grade school where you live, or is it taught only in university for those who wish to learn it? I guess what I am asking is....how pervasive is English where you live? Do alot of people speak english, or want to, or is it something that frowned upon. I am not making sense. What I mean to say, is I am interested, very much, in how other cultures perceive Americans. For example, when I lived in Italy, I was amazed that Americans were perceived as being rich. Constantly little children were asking me for money and trinkets, I always had the little children over to my house to eat and watch television. We had a VCR, and played tapes constantly, they were so intrigued. It touched my heart. Their little faces at my door in the morning, struggling so hard to speak to me, in my language, while I was in their country. My landlady, who spoke English very well, told me I should not encourage them, because I was military, and I would leave, and that would hurt them. But I could hardly help it. And then, when I studied culture in college, I learned that in some countries, we (Americans) are considered to be uncultured and that we have no class, so to speak, so I was wondering what your perceptions of Americans were as a child, and now, and whatever they are, how much of your perception do you believe was "taught" to you, and how much did you learn for yourself. If this subject makes you uncomfortable, you don't have to discuss it. But whatever you say, will not make me mad or offended.IP: Logged |
