They can be. I don't mind Jupiter squares.
But I think too many squares can be too much of a 'good' thing (for me). It probably has to do with one's own chart.

I prefer oppositions personally!

I prefer squares than opposition...opp. can drive two people apart. Squares in synastry are okay but not too many, like 4 or 5!

we have an exact mars square venus aspect (and thankfully, a venus trine mars aspect, 2 deg, the other way). i find it super arousing, though for years we just bugged the crap out of eachother, before we actually got together. now i find it is more challenging in the sense that i have to reevaluate my bubbling-over optimism, and i gotta say i LIKE doing so. he's virgo 29 mars, i'm sag 29 venus. so i'm wrapping up the lessons of overly enthused faith-oriented joviality, and he's wrapping up the lessons of straightlaced, straightfaced critical joviality-smothering. i often think if they weren't anaretic degrees it might be more difficult. but it's very very interesting and fun, and, oh, sexy to boot. boot!
