I'm still at the beginner level astrology-wise and so I learn things slowly at this stage. I confess that a lot of things are still new to me, and so I only recently figured out what one's North and South Nodes entail ... and it sooo made sense for me personally that I felt I just had to create a topic on it.
So, from what I understand, the nodes have to do with one's karma ... where you've been and where you should be heading. I've read that one's South Node represents the comfort zone that you fall back into again and again, and which you should actually try to get away from? While the North Node is what you should strive to be like, where you should aim, the direction in which you should be facing.
Well for me this totally made sense all at once on a personal level, which is usually how I come to understand a concept in astrology first: by relating it to myself:
Well my South Node is in Cancer, the 4th house, conjunct Moon, whereas my North Node is in Capricorn, 10th house, conjunct Jupiter.
So the interpretation I read for this was that I tend to want to be sort of 'safe at home' (Cancer) and that I long for the simple days of childhood where I had few responsibilities. So my comfort zone, and this is so true, is definately dependancy, emotional and otherwise. I literally depend a LOT on my mother and I always prefer staying home and being emotional and poetic rather than going out and facing the world. I dread responsibility although I have often been given quite a lot, but I go totally overboard with it and become almost obsessive compulsive in executing that responsibility perfectly.
So I was thinking to myself, how can I ever let go of the South Node, Cancer Moon, 4th house dependancy, relying on my mother for just about everything ... to the independent, responsible autonomy of Capricorn? To me it seems totally impossible. Just the thought of it leaves me wanting to curl up in a fetal bundle and start crying: I don't wanna grow up I don't wanna!!
So I don't think that I actually can let go of my Cancerian roots and maybe that's not the point ... so here the title of this post gets explained: Should I stretch up to the North Node with my feet, or at least my toes, still touching my South Node comfort zone, or should I just jump up out of my comfort zone and try to reach for independenence any which way?
If my question makes any sense at all, any and all input is totally welcome : )
Thanks : )

Take this approach:
South Node = A decent but filled up home.
North Node = New, Empty Mansion.
Take things from your home to the Mansion in convenient boxes, one at a time. Take time to place it in the Mansion.
Once you get more comfortable being the owner and occupier of the mansion, discard the old stuff. Your old home will always be there but over a few years, you wont need to visit for any stuff. You may just need to visit for old time's sake, and to be grateful to the home for enabling you to live in a beautiful mansion.

Wow IQ ... that's an amazingly useful answer! BTW I've also found your visualization for abundance so good ... the one where you're in the desert, then affirm 'I am willing to release lack' etc. Wow, you're amazing! I'm officially an IQ-Hunk groupie : D

iQ~

Our SN might feel comfortable, but there's a reason why we need to head to our NN - and having acknowledged your NN as the path you should walk to, then you must know what the reason is.
I don't think that we have to ignore our SN in order to achieve our NN, but rather use what we learned with our SN in order to achieve our NN. For example, I have Taurus NN, and I have to learn to enjoy life and trust more, instead of having fear of losing anything/anyone precious to me. But to learn that isn't to stop thinking about how precious the things/people I treasure are (coz it is by knowing this that I would find my life meaningful), but to only overcome my fears and obsessions about what's precious to me.
So don't forget the good lessons of your SN, but use them to achieve the lessons of your NN.

CuriousQ, it's in the chart you do at astro.com - that symbol that looks like Leo's symbol, but with a "T" inside. In your case, you have it in Leo. X3

Nice one iQ!

CuriousQ- http://www.astrologyweekly.com/learn-astrology/astrology-glyphs.php

you will find the glyph for the Moon's nodes and then find where it sits on your chart.

edit: sorry comica, didn't see that you had responded to him.

I have "Lunar Nodes - Discover Your Soul's Karmic Mission", by Celeste Teal. This is an excerpt from her Introduction. I need to take a closer look at my South Node placement again and see what's in my suitcase.

In these pages you will learn how to use the lunar nodes as a stand alone tool for finding out many things about yourself, your friends and loved ones. In thirty years of astrology study, I have learned more about myself and everyone I know through doing this work than from anything else up to this point. I am certain you are going to feel the same way. The nodes really do reveal our purpose and mission in life.

Sometimes a soul aborts his or her mission, or the mission is otherwise aborted. Most make it, although it may take most of the lifetime to complete the journey, make the contributions, and learn the lessons intended by that soul. This is basically accomplished by using the South Node talents to transition to North Node, gathering those new characteristics and then giving them back to the South Node.

We can determine if a soul has taken an upward road in life or an easier road. Certain individuals have extra leeway, reaping benefits now for good deeds done in the past. Others have heavy dues to pay, or they have arranged to participate in a mission that requires a great amount of experience before they qualify. There are karmic implications in the nodes; they represent the small percentage of time that our free will appears to be operating at a minimal level. Karma is an objective-balancing mechanism existing in the universal spirit. There is heavenly guidance associated with the nodes, and sometimes that higher power takes over. Sometimes there are unanticipated benefits coming to us, while at other times there is a service requested of us. Much goes on according to arrangements we made that we no longer remember. Since karma and the divine universal designs are difficult to prove, it is through application of the principles presented that you can test them for yourself.

The nodes can even be used as timing devices. Whenever a nodal contact takes place, social encounters and connections occur with others that allow us to reap our good karma, or pay some dues. This could be a transiting node contacting a natal planet, a transiting planet contacting a natal node, or even when an association comes about in which one person’s node connects with another person’s planet.

The North Node is like a cup that is running over. Gifts from the higher powers are coming to us and good karma is rewarded. The South Node is an empty cup; we are expected to fill it up. We can provide a service that will contribute to another soul or to the growth an evolution of the planet. Much is happening as part of natural processes.

The timing of transit contacts will be experienced as harmonious, uplifting, encouraging, and free flowing with the North Node contacts, or constricting, restraining and sometimes complicated with the South Node contacts. These things can all be found in the nodes and utilized on a daily basis to complete the mission and move to a higher level of the soul’s evolution.

In the spiritual sense, as an Axis of Fate, (as more modern astrologers describe the nodes), their retrograde motion suggests that happenings in the present have roots in the past. Right now the life pattern is being affected by legacy. We have certain birthrights and certain responsibilities. The nodes could be viewed as portals through which the higher universal force merges forces and has interplay with humankind. They symbolize cause-and-effect developments in life. They represent a meeting ground for issues that have a bearing on fate or free will. No one has total free will (except perhaps enlightened yogis and saints) and the nodes mark the spot where karma is a factor. Karma is not a punishment. It is the fulfilling of responsibilities that results in expanded spiritual growth. The nodes represent these compelling forces of destiny. Experiences that unfold when the nodes are activating the chart often defy or seem to operate independently of free will, reason or judgment. Whether this is experienced as a wanted or an unwanted event, it may be seen as the manner in which the higher forces are intervening or giving you a boost, helping you stay on your intended path of personal destiny.

There are things to be learned through the nodes that are not to be found through any other chart factors. They explain the “why” behind our very existence. They explain our purpose. They bring light to why other chart features manifest as they do, as the nodes represent special influences that may act independently of others, or can actually counteract others. They define our karmic lessons and our destined missions. They prove that our lives are strongly influenced by karma and that we had specific intentions before arriving in the present life.

As far as defining our intended mission, the node positions in the natal chart begin to tell this story from birth. This axis shows our link to the past and points to the future. The south end of the axis reveals what we came into this life with: our assets and liabilities, our accumulated good and bad karma. The South Node represents the suitcase we brought with us. This is all the stuff we own. By sign, the South Node indicates our nature and inborn character traits that are clearly visible through our behavior and actions. They are automatic, based on prior successes and past fears. We have lifetimes of experience under our belt of the nature of the South Node sign. It’s easier to continue doing works and deeds utilizing those qualities. Like an old pair of pajamas, we find a certain amount of comfort wearing these old clothes, even though there are some less desirable features about them. They are fading, the elastic is weakening, and the fabric is no longer crisp. We certainly don’t make our best impression in them. The inborn tendencies are so habitual that, unfortunately, we tend to express some of the less appealing traits of the sign holding the South Node, and that is the worse thing to do. To strongly act out the negative sign traits of the South Node may mean a person is headed toward great unhappiness, setbacks and remorse. The South Node can be viewed as a weak spot. It has been compared to quicksand, as it shows the footsteps we left behind us that we may be tempted to retrace, maybe only to fall into a black hole.

Our goal and plan now was to acquire the positive traits symbolized by the exact opposite sign, where the North Node lies. It represents the future, and those attributes to be acquired next on our continuing journey. The highest qualities symbolized by the North Node are those we aimed to claim, that we actually were excited to make claim to; to do works and deeds that exemplify that sign. While the South Node symbolizes a comfort zone, the North Node symbolizes the new and novel - therefore it takes courage to venture into the new territory. There is challenge, like starting school that first day. There is guidance for us at the North Node, but we must put forth a conscious personal effort in that direction to draw on all the blessings the universe has in store for us. Moving forward brings the greatest happiness.

We do not actually demonstrate our North Node traits until we cultivate and develop them. Throughout our life, events and circumstances push us toward this end. Life experiences encourage us to develop those new faculties. Life rewards us with unhappiness when we try to continue on the old path, to remind us of our intents and purposes. We can utilize all the many talents we brought with us to accomplish the task by redistributing that energy. A knack associates with the South Node may be just what is needed to carry out the mission symbolized by the North Node. Some make the transition more rapidly than others. Most are working through some facet of this personal challenge for the entire lifetime and possibly into the next. If you are very aware, you may find you still have some hang-up associated with your South Node, even if you have managed to develop many of your North Node traits. Some South Node traits may linger, as they are so habitual. Sadly, some individuals make little progress or don’t make it, but they will get the chance again. Eventually, gradually, we all make it. There’s really no such thing as failure when it comes to meeting our spiritual destiny.

Deux Antares ... I haven't read all the stuff Zala posted from the book yet, but boy o boy is it ever spot-on! Thanks a million!! What struck me most so far is:
"When Capricorn North Node people recognize a goal that's truly important to them and live by it, they gain the self-respect and assurance they need to live responsibly."
I think this is what I still need to find. I'm actually a very serious person and I need a serious goal ...

comica... What you said : "
I don't think that we have to ignore our SN in order to achieve our NN, but rather use what we learned with our SN in order to achieve our NN." ... is also how I feel. I'm glad someone else feels the same. It's hard for me to imagine changing 3o plus years of habitual orientation just like that ... For me the feeling that I need to depend on someone else is really very strong... If I feel like I have no-one to depend on I totally freak out. I'll have to gradually wean myself off this mind-set ... gradually I say! : D (Sigh ... )

venus in gemini .... sheesh ! A lot of things to absorb so I'm gonna take the rest of the day and weekend to read up on this stuff... or think about... let it come to me. The weird thing is I know that the karmic signpost I've now encountered really is important, because I feel such HUGE resistance to it! You know? But I'm also grateful I guess. It's like having an unvoiced question answered: like - why do I feel so ill at ease? Oh! I see! Because I'm heading the wrong way! I should be going thataway!! OK you goat-node ... here I come : )
Thank you for all the answers people ... keep em coming! I feel like I'm being surrounded by a lot of very wise beings y'all : )

Thanks for the kind words PA and FTBell, I am just speaking from experience. Initially, it was too difficult for me to leave the "comfort" [if you can call it that] of the Aries South Node, the step by step approach with NN as a reward really helps.

Attaining the North Node behaviour is actually one of the rewards of Astrology.

Zala did an amazing job of posting the Nodes Information from Jan's classic. You cannot read that information just once. You have to re-read every few months to get a new bit of wisdom, it is a knowledge with cosciousness.
Some of the Aries South Node descriptions, is like she reported a detailed past life recall of mine...

hi fatinkerbell, your first post struck me as so funny because im the opposite, with a Cancer NN, and Capricorn SN, and one of your quotes, the bit about always wanting to go home, that is sooo me now that i've been moving forward to my Cancer NN, but it was -really- difficult to step away from Capricorn, which is so not about being vulnerable, and is so much about control and being in charge. to relinquish a lot of that was so tough, especially so because like you i also have the moon conj the SN. but i've had a lot of help with people and their personal planets, like right now my daughter her mercury is conj my NN and she teaches me a lot how important is to be a part of that emotional sharing, etc. I agree with iQ, it can be scary but baby steps are v. important. and the bit about needing that teacher to guide you, capricorn (saturn) is that teacher, so i really think getting back on that wagon and persisting in getting better, in setting goals for yourself, small goals that turn into larger goals that you can reach, will be such good lessons for you. and how appropriate for you to mention that! accomplishing personal goals is a big part of the capricorn journey, and i should know since i have to keep moving away from that, and its hard cos its what im so used to: to plan, to organize, to put the wheels in motion, to follow through, to persist, to attain, to manage. all Capricorn-speak, lol

You guys are the best ... Lonake, I'm really inspired by what you said. I can't wait until I'm thrilled by plans and executions of plans and responsibility and more responsibility. Actually I do sense it sometimes ... for example when teaching I like doing it my way and I plan very diligently for every class ... also I like it when things unfold according to a plan I made. So maybe I can start with that : )
Right, so, this is my plan:
Point number one: Make a plan.
lol
or:
List of things to do.
1. Make a list of things to do.
Well I think I'm off to a smashing start!

ok i forgot this is the Capricorn bible right here, Stephen R. Covey 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People' - by the time you're done with Capricorn you'll have this all down pat:

https://www.stephencovey.com/7habits/7habits.php

(habits outlined briefly in links on the right) - check it out from local library if possible, its a very popular book actually. im sure they have lots of used copies on Amazon too.

now wheres the one for Cancer, lol. was it the potty training book i read last year!

Lonake ... I think I actually read part of that book once. The only habit I can remember is that effective people delay gratification. I guess I'll have to refer to it again ... sigh. Well the opposite book would probably be "How to lose friends and alienate people" ... I don't remember the author now but it's the true story of a British tabloid journalist who gets invited to work for some magazine ... not Vogue, but something similar to Vogue ... Oh I remember ,... Vanity Fair, not Vogue, ... and he finds himself screwing up royally at Conde Nast, the famous publishing house that publishes all these glossy magazines, and which is also the setting for 'The Devil Wears Prada'. Well I don't know if that's a typically Cancerian story, but certainly this guy is a bundle of nerves and insecurities and he basically does the opposite of what he needs to do to keep his job. It's very funny. They made a movie of it too. But if you really wanna be Cancerian you gotta start with music. Everything by Air Supply. I mean, check out the following lyrics from their song "I'm all out of love":
'I'm lying alone
with my head on the phone
thinking of you till it hurts
I know you hurt too
but what else can we do
tormented and torn apart
I wish I could carry
your smile in my heart
for times when my life seems so low.
It would make me believe
what tomorrow would bring
When today doesn't really know
Doesn't really know
I'm all out of love
I'm so lost without you
I know you were right
believing for so long
I'm all out of love
What am I without you?
It can't be too late, to say that I was so wrong'
Anyway, the anthem of Cancerian neediness must be Depeche Mode's 'Somebody'... Here are the lyrics (keep a tissue handy):
'I need somebody to share
share the rest of my life
share my inmost thoughts
know my intimate details
someone who'll stand by my side
and give me support
and in return
I'll give my support
Someone who'll listen to me
when I start to speak
about the world we live in
and life in general
and though my views may be wrong
they may even be perverted
I know she'll hear me out
and won't easily be converted
to my way of thinking
In fact she'll often disagree
but at the end of it all
she will understand me.
I need somebody who cares
for me passionately
with every thought
and with every breath
someone who'll help me see things
in a different light
all the things I detest
I will almost like
I don't want to be tied
to anyone's strings
I normally carefully steer clear of those things
But when I'm asleep
I need somebody who will
put their arms around me
hold me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I'll get away with it.'
