I think he has a very airy disposition. I'm for some reason feeling Gemini. And although his fingers are rather stocky (?) I think the ruling planet Mercury squaring Saturn would attribute to that.

Or maybe Sagittarius? His style I think makes me think so.

I would guess his neptune and uranus in the 4th house like I did with your chart, which would give him libra as ascendant like his sun sign. If born at 5:30 AM, his Saturn also falls in the 4th house which can indicate a childhood lacking in warmth and affection.

It also matches with the time at 8 years old, uranus is leaving the 4th house, pluto entering the third and north node conjuncting mars.

I also noticed his Ceres would fall in the 4th house, but it's exactly squaring Nessus (abuse) and Nessus is already conjunct his sun, so Ceres is also squaring his sun.
(People that have difficult or damaged relationships with their mother will invariably have Ceres in a hard aspect (square or opposition) to one of their planets.)

that being said there's also something about him that makes me want to say aquarius, something in air anyway

my friend with benefits is an aquarius sun and leo rising and there's something similar there that i cant put my finger on

What popped in my head was aries or taurus, he reminds of this guy I slept with who was a Taurus with Venus in Aries and moon in Capricorn.

My feeling is Aquarius Rising with Saturn in the 12th and Chiron close to the Descendant. Chiron conjunct DSC feels very wounded about love and relationships, he may struggle to let anybody truly close until he's older. Be a great friend to him <3

Would it be fair to say that he had a happier life once adopted?

The chart I've guessed implies that he was a lot happier in his later childhood and felt safer and part of a community. Whereas in his younger years he was very scared and oppressed? I could be way off the mark of course....
