Hi Lotiswhite,

I was wondering about aspects to housecusps. I know they are traditionally not considered (only ASC, DESC, MC and IC).

But if we are check for aspects to these cardinal angles, why not checking for aspects to the others as well?
For example:
If an aspect to ASC has bearings to 1st house issues, why wouldn`t have an aspect to 5th house cusp have a meaning for 5th house issues?

Of course the orbs would probably be tighter than for the angular cusps (I actually was only checking for orbs within about 1-2 degrees).

In my own chart I see:

8th cusp:
trine chartruler Jupiter in Pisces in 3rd house (orb: 1°10)

- even though the 8th house definitely is a challenge for me; I like talking about it. I like reading books which have a strong 8th house symbolism, but also with the fantasy-flavour of the Pisces-Jupiter.
And writing or comunicating about my 8th house, is surprisingly easy and it really helps me to understand myself better.

9th house cusp:
trine 9th house ruler Sun in Sagittarius in 1st house (orb: 1°05)

well, this is pretty selfexplanatory I think and simply enhances the Sagittarianness of my Sun

3rd house cusp
conjunct true BML in Aquarius (orb:1°37)
Well, yes, it definitely is easy to get me all riled up if I perceive injustice in terms of inequality or manipulation; and my dark sides as well as passions really come out in mental issues; but then again ruler of 3rd house is in Scorpio -w hat do you expect?

11th cusp:
conjunct 3rd ruler Uranus in Scorpio in 10th (orb: 0°14)

12th cusp:
trine Vertex in Cancer in 8th (orb: 0°25)
trine Eros in Cancer in 8th (orb: 0°04)

What do you think?
Do aspects to housecusps matter?

They do Ceri, any aspect to a house cusp is important.

Hey there Ceri!

I think house cusps do matter in the natal, and in synastry. So, yes, I think you bring up a very valid point.

This issue has been crossing my mind quite a few times in resent years…. I’d think to myself, if the Asc can be aspected, then why not the 3rd house cusp, or any house cusp for that matter! I’m mean, there is really no logical reason to dismiss an aspect to any of the cusps, except tradition. I suspect they are quite significant, just like aspects to the house rulers are… And I’ve got to admit when looking at people’s charts, I’ve been quietly checking how their house cusps aspect the rest of the planets in their natal.

I liked you examples of how you feel it fits in your chart…

So I’ll try one,

I’ve got Uranus in the 11th but conjunct my 12th house cusp, and opposite my 6th house cusp….

I spend a lot of time imagining in general (Uranus is my 3rd house ruler), and astrology is a topic I’m always playing around with inside my mind (I guess you could say I‘m an astrological fantasizer). When I look at a chart It’s like I can feel the ‘flow’ of that person’s energy, the vibe of that person’s being.

Uranus being opposite my 6th house cusp, seems to manifest as my distaste of a lot of traditional medicine. I prefer to go the natural, alternative route. Drugs do not cure an illness, they just mask the symptoms of the underlying issue for a while… If you have an emergency situation, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. But otherwise, I’d much rather see a naturopath, nutritionist, or some type of other alternative health practitioner, then take pharmaceuticals. The majority of that stuff winds up being detrimental over the long term.

Thank you for your input, Lalalinda and Lotiswhite.

Several years ago I was reading a lot of books about "Transpersonal astrology" (a German astrology school, founded by Michael Roscher); they put most emphasis on houserulerships and also used the aspects to housecusps.

"I’d think to myself, if the Asc can be aspected, then why not the 3rd house cusp, or any house cusp for that matter! I’m mean, there is really no logical reason to dismiss an aspect to any of the cusps, except tradition."
That was exactly what I have been thinking!

Of course it leaves the question about the orb. What orb do we allow for aspects with a housecusp? And do we allow the same orb for the cardinal angles or can these be wider?

"I’ve been quietly checking how their house cusps aspect the rest of the planets in their natal."
Yes, I`ve been doing so, too, though very irregularly and not systematic.
And I`d like to find a more systematic approach.

It`s maybe silly, but I have been checking out Robert Downey`s chart just for fun (because I really like the way he expresses himself, even in interview; always makes me smile, without me having evwen the tiniest hint of a crush on him).

It just struck me that there were quite some conjunctions to intermediate housecusps.

His Moon is exactly conjunct my 6th house cusp and his Neptune is conjunct my 12th house cusp.

my MC is widely conjunct his 3rd house cusp (2-3 degrees).
my Uranus is widely conjunct his IC (3 degrees)
my ASC, Neptune and NN are conjunct his 5th house cusp, with my SN being on his 11th house cusp.

Just found this very intriguing. And it somehow makes sense. his 5th house cusp might have to do with his creative expression, and with my ASC-Neptune-NN being there it seems to be not so surprising, that I like his creativity.

"I spend a lot of time imagining in general (Uranus is my 3rd house ruler), and astrology is a topic I’m always playing around with inside my mind (I guess you could say I‘m an astrological fantasizer). "
Yes, I do that, too, a lot.

I daydream about people`s chart. lol

"Uranus being opposite my 6th house cusp, seems to manifest as my distaste of a lot of traditional medicine."
Yes, that totally makes sense.

another example from my family.

My youngest brother has Moon-Jupiter-Uranus-conjunction around his 9th house cusp, and my ASC-Neptune-NN falls there!
Obviously that means that my SN falls onto his 3rd house cusp. (how fitting for siblings!)

We are talking all the time and we are talking about philosophy, education, social issues, university, teaching etc.

my Saturn falls onto his 5th house cusp.

his Saturn-Pluto-conjunction falls onto my Uranus and 11th housecusp.

And his Mercury falls onto my 3rd house cusp. Siblings.
Well, my BML is there as well, so our discussions, though always lighthearted and "breezy" (Aquarius), can get very heated, enthusiastic at the same time.
I remember when he was a teenager I tried to help him with his homework for school and it did not go well. He was stubborn, and I ended up throwing the book against the wall and slamming the door shut behind me on my way out.
We love each other to bits, and this has never affected our relationship, but he can get me riled up about educational issues very easily. lol
But most of the time we are on the same page, and I find his unconventional approach and views very refreshing and they remind me a bit about myself in that age, just that I was not as outspoken about them. He also hears the grass grow. It is unbelievable. (His Aqua Mercury is in his 12th house).
