What can indicate in a natal chart the passion for reading? (Books not magazines and billboards).

In my opinion:

Mercury in 3rd or 9th house.
Mercury signs on cusp of 3rd or 9th house.
Strong Mercury (better not being afflicted by Saturn and Uranus)
Mercury in Air ( it is known)

Anything else...?

I know people who DON'T like to read or don't have patience for it. (for example... I'm the only one from my family who is an avid reader. I read everything falls into my hands)

No billboards? Now you're just being a snob.

I read like a ravenous beast, I tick a few markings you mentioned. The most important is Virgo Mercury - the sign of novelists and bookworms (in H12 for the extra oomph).

Both Saturn and Uranus in H3. They rock quite efficiently there.

H9 in Gemini.

Air is common among the philosophers... Air signs love reading differently, as it is a necessity not a pleasure.

I have Gemini 9th house cusp. Mercury in Virgo although it's 12th house.

I have little patience to read books. I will do it if it is for learning. Otherwise, I have no passion for it.

Not a snob. It was a joke inspired by Two and a Half Men when Alan asks Kandi if she likes to read and she says: you don't mean billboards and magazines, right? Do menus count?

In this case I can say this matches me, a very avid reader. I have 3H Libra Mercury in a stellium (with Sun and pluto almost perfectly aligned with my merc).

I'm not sure how I did it but I even taught myself to read and have read a lot since then. And even in elementary school I started writing my own stories when bored in class.

I can read articles about topics i am passionate about for long hours but i cannot stay glued to a book that falls in my hands. I'm not sure why.

I'll probably blame the Moon square Mercury aspect.

Mars in Gemini. Mars is the energy and the sign is what type of energy and the house is where, so it's the third.

I have Moon square Mercury. Should I blame the progressions?

Avid reader here. I love the smell and feel of a brand new book but also the markings and nostalgic feel of a lent book.

Libra Mercury in the 10/11 cusp. Empty 9th, with ruler (Sun) in 10H Virgo. 3rd house with NN in Pisces, but my 3H ruler (Saturn) is in 12H Sagittarius.

Actually, I've enjoyed that, too...and I don't even have any Taurus (save I think one asteroid) in my chart.

Anyway, thought I'd share this for fun (short on why books are better for "being smelly"):

Heavily tenanted 3rd and 9th houses, or the rulers of either strongly aspected.

I am an avid reader. Gemini Sun, merc and Venus in the 9th. Books saved my life because I could transcend my family into new worlds.

I always had a problem with the smell of books. I cannot stand it. Dunno why. Glad I have an e-ereader.

Seriously? I can't stand the smell of newspaper. Gives me headache every damn time. Book smells just make me nostalgic for some reason.

I am an avid reader of anything i can get my hands on, as in,I was at the library 2 days ago and I've read one book and a half since then.

I have mercury in the 12th house in pisces, so it's in detriment, my 9th and 3rd houses are empty, gemini is on the 3rd cusp though, and mercury quintiles my midheaven. Saturn is in the 12th house Pisces.I think it all comes down to: "Literature is the most agreeable way of ignoring life." F. Pessoa...
