Does anyone know if there is a prevalent theme in a chart that shows a predisposition towards addiction? I have been struggling on and off all my life with addiction to various substances. Any insight from an astrological point of view will be helpful so that I might have insight into my disease.

Thank you

In Astrology, Neptune is said to rule addictions

a lot of astrologers will focus on the hard aspects to Neptune
conjunction,opposition,square
quinxunx

cosmobiologists and uranian astrologers look at the semisquare, sesquiquadrate

also midpoint pictures involving Neptune can be something to look...even midpoint pictures involving Neptune in halfsum

parallels,contraparallels can be included

I also look at contacts to the Neptune Nodes or Neptune aspecting nodes of Mercury,Venus,Mars.

Thank you, Glaucus. I have Neptune conj Mars & Merc. in the 2nd or 3rd, not really sure. My Merc is in mutual reception to Pluto. Does Pluto have any bearing on addiction, as well?

You're welcome.

Well...Pluto is said to be the planet associated with obsession due to its intense nature

but Pluto is one of over 1,000 transneptunians though

so even Pluto's fellow transneptunians could be about obsession due to their intense natures

Pluto has 3 transneptunian dwarf planet buddies

Eris which is larger than Pluto
Makemake
Haumea

the largest named dwarf planet candidates are
which are all transneptunians:
Sedna
Orcus
Quaoar
Varuna
Ixion

I look at all those objects in regards to checking out evolutionary intensified lessons

that also includes their nodes too

nodes of objects besides the Moon are overlooked by majority of astrologers, but they have astronomical and astrological relevance

I'd use no more than 1 degree orb for transneptunian nodesI

I use no more than 2 degree for planetary nodes

Look I am totally new at this, but I did remember reading something about uranus opposing chiron..but that dosen't make sense to me, since that could be easily generational, but idk. I was also told that neptune is the one to watch...

I have read that a hard aspect between Neptune and mars can make it more challenging for an individual to avoid substance abuse. Although I have Neptune square moon in Virgo h1, and I have developed some very unhealthy relationships with substances over the years, and found it very hard to get back on track. A propensity to over do it and avoid be truthful to myself about it. You really have to watch those hard Neptune aspects.

The Centaur, Pholus is also associated with substance abuse, addictions

Pholus is the 2nd centaur discovered after the 1st discovered centar,Chiron. It was discovered in 1992.

Pholus links the orbits of Saturn and Neptune

Saturn/Neptune midpoint is said to be "Pholus-sensitive" which means that an activation of that midpoint is like an activation of Pholus.

the aspects of Pholus might be something to look at
its nodes, midpoint configurations too

My ex-husband had Mars conj Neptune and indeed had some issues with substances.
I would not peg just everyone with this aspect as having an issue tho (addiction shows in different ways!)...I'd def look at the whole chart. But yeah, hard aspects to Neptune can really be a major telling factor. My ex had Neptune as the ruler of his chart and it conj Mars. You probably won't see the smoother aspects making as much trouble.

Maybe put your whole chart up, Pluto, if you don't mind?
A visual reference would help a lot and would show how the whole thing plays out...you'd probably get a lot more feedback too

Agreed with MVM, it can't be just 1 or 2 factors but a theme that is prevalent in the entire natal chart.

The info Glaucus shared is absolute GOLD, you will not find this kind of personalised information on any website or book, that I can assure you I don't think there is any better answer to the question, along with real life examples too!

But yeah, agreed with the Neptunian theme in relation to drugs. I would also throw a bit of Pluto in there as you gotta get your addiction thrills from the underworld and have to deal with underground scum to get it.

But it also depends on the addiction itself and the circumstances of it. A chart could show habitual drug addiction/rehab/relapse cycle, it could show someone who was a drug addict themselves who got clean and used their experiences to help other people come over their addictions, it could show a huge marker for depression or another type of mental illness where drug abuse is a symptom of, it could show someone who uses illicit drugs like a shaman for spiritual enlightenment (I DO NOT recommend or endorse this in any way), it could show someone who has a very strong 5th house influence (with supporting aspects of course, one cannot make a judgment on 1 house placement on its own), where someone has that awesome, high flying lifestyle where taking drugs is a part of it, or show gambling addictions (gambling is a 5th house thing, but it would have to be somehow connected to the 2nd house [income & possession ---> losing them] or 8th house [gambling OTHER people's money])..

I don't know if drug addiction shows up in my chart at all, but I have had a long history with drugs in the past. I smoked weed constantly in high school and throughout my early 20s, along with alcohol and went through a stage once I hit 18 partying every weekend until I got bored of that and became a cocaine addict and alcoholic. But only on weekends, the rest of the week I'd be recovering.

In today's time, I'm all grown up and got the partying out of my system. I still like to have a drink when I go out but other than that, I don't touch alcohol. The only prevailing addictions is cigarettes, lol but the thought of taking drugs, being up all night and watching the sun come up as I'm coming down just makes me cringe cos it really is a horrible feeling. I can only just barely handle hangovers.

But what I will say is that I was never a hopeless drug addict, never touched a needle, always held down a job and went to school, never went to rehab, never sold my body for drugs..nothing like that. Just a functioning addict, I guess. I NEVER lost control while being on drugs and always aware of the situation and circumstances, so I can say that I never really had a bad experience on them either.

Neptune is in the 10th house for me and I've taken drugs all throughout my high school and tertiary education.

Neptune sxt. Pluto (explains the ease and comfort with the drug scene)

Sun opp. Neptune. (there's a drug-aspect right there, the sun (self) and neptune (drugs, escapsism)

Sun trine. Pluto

Mars opp. Neptune

But its allll down to choice. And perception. I may have Sun trine Pluto and that may have been a drug-aspect in the past but now I have come to see it as a very powerful aspect which gives me the incredible power to transform myself and resurrect from the ashes (drug addiction).

Thanks so much for everyone's feedback. My knowledge of astrology is not as advanced as many of you. Some of it was over my head, but informative, nontheless. I will be doing some research, that's for sure. Glaucus, where would I go to study the rudiments of, for instance, dwarf planets, centaurs, the transneptunians, etc? Also, What is neurodivergence?
I've found that Neptune has given me gifts (I am a poet and w/ Nept conj Merc, this is a natural mode of expression for me), but it has also given me many trials and troubles. I will post my chart so that perhaps someone here might help me smooth out some of the knots.
Thanks again to all of you. I feel fortunate to have a such an exceptional source of compassion and knowledge to turn to.

How do you post images on the site? Anyway, here is my astro data:

Planetary positions
planet sign degree motion
Sun Libra 13°51'24 in house 2 direct
Moon Virgo 16°57'57 end of house 12 direct
Mercury Scorpio 7°18'32 in house 2 direct
Venus Virgo 16°45'17 end of house 12 direct
Mars Scorpio 3°45'44 in house 2 direct
Jupiter Capricorn 27°37'24 in house 5 direct
Saturn Capricorn 23°18'42 in house 5 stationary (D)
Uranus Leo 28°58'54 in house 12 direct
Neptune Scorpio 10°03'13 in house 2 direct
Pluto Virgo 9°03'39 in house 12 direct
True Node Leo 26°25'26 in house 12 retrograde
Planets at the end of a house are interpreted in the next house.

House positions (Placidus)
Ascendant Virgo 17°43'05
2nd House Libra 12°45'41
3rd House Scorpio 12°29'22
Imum Coeli Sagittarius 15°48'26
5th House Capricorn 19°37'52
6th House Aquarius 20°40'18
Descendant Pisces 17°43'05
8th House Aries 12°45'41
9th House Taurus 12°29'22
Medium Coeli Gemini 15°48'26
11th House Cancer 19°37'52
12th House Leo 20°40'18

Major aspects
Moon Conjunction Venus 0°13
Moon Trine Saturn 6°21
Moon Sextile Neptune 6°55
Moon Conjunction Pluto 7°54
Moon Conjunction Ascendant 0°45
Mercury Conjunction Mars 3°33
Mercury Conjunction Neptune 2°45
Mercury Sextile Pluto 1°45
Venus Conjunction Ascendant 0°58
Mars Sextile Uranus 4°47
Mars Sextile Pluto 5°18
Jupiter Conjunction Saturn 4°19
Jupiter Quincunx Uranus 1°22
Saturn Trine Ascendant 5°36
Neptune Sextile Pluto 1°00
Numbers indicate orb (deviation from the exact aspect angle).

According to this, it doesn't show Nept conj Mars because of the 7 deg orb. I guess it depends on who does the chart (?)

Also, some astrologers have shown Pluto conj my Asc & Moon, but because of the orb it doesn't show on here. What is the rule of thumb for the deg of the orb? Or does it depend on the planet?

Thank you again, My "Knowflake" Friends!

Right

I use small orbs myself. no more than 5 degrees. I was influenced by Robert Hand's book, HOROSCOPE SYMBOLS.

Your Mercury seems to be conjunct your Mars/Neptune midpoint any way.

Usually if a person can identify with a wide orbed aspect, they usually have a midpoint involving the 2 planets that are in aspect.

You might even have Mars parallel Neptune in declinations. That's another example of how a person can relate to a wide orbed aspect.

I have a Mercury-Neptune conjunction, ruling my 6th House to boot, as well as a 12th House NN.

Totally anti-alcohol. Why bother with that fattening cr@p when I can pop into LL and read all this super trippy stuff? Haha

Neptune aspects
12 house placements
plutonian placements too

I have suchhh a huge potential to be a huge crack/alcohol/gambling addict I swear(sun trine neptune 1 degree, pluto sextile sun 1 degree, neptune square moon and asc (both loosely). I know I have tendencies bc I can go through phases where I'm pretty 'focused' on something and it's quite persistent.

But I stay away from drugs and gambling just to be safe. Alcohol is alright though.
