We all have our own way of expressing it.

Sure. We all express ourselves differently, I agree.

Tell me, when somebody needs help, do you give them what they want or do you give them what you think they need?

Can we really give despite our egos? Or are we just feeding the egos by giving?

I give time and attention and support to my closest and it makes me feel good.
Is that compassion? Or am I stroking my ego?

These questions are not addressed to you personally, MVM, they are just my own internal pauses.

If we are giving someone what we think they need, then maybe we are simply serving in order to get back some kind of reaction, maybe.

My parents didn't always express compassion well. But they meant well. I can forgive them for having their own brand of compassion which didn't mesh with mine. They didn't give me what I needed, but they sure cared, period.
And I think this is the bottom line.

i don't think compassion is necessarily about giving people what they think they need OR what you think they need...but about understanding where they are at and/or coming from. whether you express it well or not is influenced by so many factors...

but it tends to mean (to me) giving the benefit of the doubt and not judging them by YOUR interpretation of their lives/words/actions...

i agree, i t think that depending on where we are on our journey, we can express our most universal features (like compassion) differently;

katatonic,

at times it is hard for me to judge what they really need, people who i really care about. at times the best thing i can do is to just do nothing. it's hard. also when i am in need myself, the best thing to do is to just help my own self before i can go helping others. compassion within
