Scenario:Grandparents have 2 Estates, one daughter, and two grand children. Grandparents choose to leave the least valued estate to their eldest grandchild (who also has a child), and the higher valued estate to be split into two parts - one for daughter and other half for other grandchild. Daughter marries a new man who encourages her to convince her parents to change their Will so that the grandchildren are removed because it does not comply with the 'natural order of things'. Naturally the grandparents are insulted and therefor do not change their will. Also, the grandchildren are also instructed to not accept their inheritence by their mother and are asked to choose between having a relationship with their mother and step father or keeping their inheritence. The grandparents then advice their solicitor of such things and also place their eldest grandaughter as their power of attorney and executor to protect against the agenda of their daughter and their daughters husband. And this has infuriated their daughter and therefor the whole family is in feud over what is right and just. Question). is the daughter of the grandparents right for commanding that the 'natural order of things' is respected? And that she is right to place an ultimatum on her own children? IP: Logged |

Sounds like just another overblown sense of entitlement to me. And the reasoning is just plain stupid.I can't even imagine why there's even a feud, it seems obvious to me (and I'm usually one to see multiple points of view) that the daughter and her husband are being unreasonable (at best) jerks. And that she's unworthy of the love she expects her daughters to give her if she forces them to choose. Frankly, I think the mother is lucky to not get cut out of the will completely (if nothing else, just to see if her man leaves her over it). This assumes that very important info isn't being withheld, like the granddaughters being crack addicts or something of that nature (while the mother is not of course). IP: Logged |

No and no. The estates of the grandparents are theirs to decide on, not the son-in-law. For whatever reason(s), "natural order" doesn't suit their desires about what happens to their estates, and it reads as though they put thought into how they would divvy things and attempted to do it pretty fairly. Their wishes should be respected, and it is unfair that the mother demands that her children choose between the inheritance (which might pay for them to go to school, or whatever else they would use the money for) and a relationship with her. i would agree with T and M, EXCEPT if there is a question as to the grandparents' mental competence. it may be that they are using the will to get back at their daughter for something. but if they are compos mentos, that is their choice!IP: Logged |

I vote Grandpa takes Granny on an expensive cruise and send a postcard. Or buys a big car and drives by his daughter's house waving a wad of banknotes. Natural order of things? Natural b.s lined emotional blackmail. We are just getting one side, but even Mrs Libra Moon here is struggling to think of some background situation that might explain this kind of behaviour other than avarice and having strings where your arms used to hang.
