quote:
Shattered Barry Delaney, 25, shocked mourners when he turned up at Corporal Kevin Elliott's graveside in a luminous dress and pink legwarmers. But tearful Barry revealed he was determined to honour the Black Watch soldier's memory after the two jokers made a pledge to each other. He explained: "We agreed that whoever died first would have the last laugh by making the other promise to wear a frock to the funeral. "This was Kevin's last laugh. He made sure he could make a fool of me for the very last time." Barry, of Dundee, added: "It was crazy, but I did it for Kev." The 24-year-old told how he was almost turned away from Tuesday's service - as he arrived filled with grief and anger at his buddy's death in Afghanistan. But he said Kevin's gran Margaret Simpson was determined to let him keep his promise. He said: "The police weren't going to let me in dressed like that but Kevin's granny came along and told them it was OK. "I had been drinking and I was really upset. I should have been there for Kevin's granny - but she was there for me. "I was in a bit of a state, crying and stuff. I shouted at the soldiers. I asked if they were there when Kevin got killed. They didn't save him, did they?"

what a great pact! none of this "i'll go with you so you won't be alone" bullshite! it reminds me of the few services i have been to where the guest of honour knew they were dying and chose ALL the service, music etc. two of those people arranged it so the last thing we would hear at the gathering was...them laughing. and laughing. and laughing. Another little something for Poppy day, from WB Yeats:- quote: An Irish Airman Foresees his DeathI know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere among the clouds above; Those that I fight I do not hate, Those that I guard I do not love; My country is Kiltartan Cross, My countrymen Kiltartan's poor, No likely end could bring them loss Or leave them happier than before. Nor law, nor duty bade me fight, Nor public men, nor cheering crowds, A lonely impulse of delight Drove to this tumult in the clouds; I balanced all, brought all to mind, The years to come seemed waste of breath, A waste of breath the years behind In balance with this life, this death.
