Seriously I doubt im paranoid but some horrific things are starting to happen in the world. They are occurring more frequently now or I am older and seeing things differently but just like everybody else I cant help but think these natural disasters are becoming too frequent.Firstly the Tsunami and then the volcano erupting and now a hole I mean WTF. I'd love to know what you guys think about 2012 and though lots of you guys are saying its not the end and its ridiculous alot of things in my religion seem to add up to it. Though this is'nt exactly the place to bring that up either but it seems something major "could" happen that changes us forever... and no I'm not talking about a 4d world and other ridiculous fantasies people have in their minds. Look at this [URL]http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/money_politics_law/punching_a_hole_in_the_earth.htm]http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/money_politics_law/punching_a_hole_in_the_earth.htm[/UR L] I mean it is crazy that you could just be standing on the ground and get swallowed. It just makes me want to not care about anything and just have fun forever and not worry over responsibilities because always in the back of my mind I have this ridiculous thought that the world is going to come to an end. Please feel free to share anything ------------------ "If a theory is evidently or probably untrue, or pernicious, or at all harmful, it is to be rejected and condemned" IP: Logged |

I think there are a few things to be mindful of regarding natural disasters.1) Recorded natural disasters have increased over the past 20 years. However, scientists only really have comprehensive records for the past 100 years or so. That's not very much data and there's no concrete way to compare our current cycle of disasters with previous centuries. 2) People are more aware of natural disasters lately because we now hear about every one of them immediately with in-depth coverage. This is opposed to the days before 24-hour news channels and the internet when people might hear about a natural disaster only if it was very significant or very close geographically. Can you imagine if there had been 24-news and the internet at the time of the Vesuvius eruption in 79ad? The whole "2010 = more disasters = end of the world" panic happening now might very well pale in comparison. 3) As our population increases, we need more room and more people are living in areas prone to natural disasters. This is happening specifically in coastal areas which means that hurricanes/cyclones/typhoons and flooding that once did not affect people are now affecting them, making them more significant and disastrous to humans thereby creating more news stories. I won't tell you that you are worried for nothing because it's a valid concern. But if you are feeling extremely worried, you can always contact a geophysicist or a scientific group online to talk about facts and get a perspective on it. IP: Logged |

of course she can swallow us up, no problem and not even a hiccup for her...whether she will or not i don't know. but if her self-correction/ balancing involves upheavals that is what will happen... the idea that we can ruin the earth strikes me as hubris, but the other way around, definitely can happen.but i believe transcending our egos and the illusions we create will also help us transcend any such occurrence...or leave the planet altogether... Hey lalalinda, the thing that gets me about this is that when you look at the hole, it looks too circular to be a natural disaster. ------------------ Virgo Asc 6˚& Mars 0˚ Gemini Sun 24˚ Libra Moon 14˚(conjunct Pluto 0˚ in 2nd house) Gemini Mercury 25˚ Cancer Venus 29˚ (Mutual reception with Moon) And yes, i'm a guy! yeah I saw that on yahoo. Just crazy. I also noticed how perfect of a hole it looks like. Like it was drilled out or something. Very odd. IP: Logged |

That's right on, GG. What happened in Guatemala is not a natural disaster. It's a man-made disaster. quote: The giant sinkhole that opened beneath downtown Guatemala City over the weekend is all the rage right now. There's just one problem: it isn't a sinkhole."Sure, it looks a lot like a sinkhole," geologist Sam Bonis told Discovery News from his home in Guatemala. "And a whale looks a lot like a fish, but calling it one would be very misleading." Instead, Bonis prefers the term "piping feature" -- a decidedly less sexy label for the 100-foot deep, 66-foot wide circular chasm. But it's an important distinction, he maintains, because "sinkholes" refer to areas where bedrock is solid but has been eaten away by groundwater, forming a geological Swiss cheese whose contours are nearly impossible to predict. The situation beneath the country's capital is far different, and more dangerous.

another story on NatGeo I think of similar stated that many would be popping up in U.S., hopefully not under a freeway for example (!) A freeway to me is the scariest place to be in any disaster, these sink holes and earthquakes, forget it, even Earth is not solid ground. IP: Logged |

NatGeo does have a slideshow of sinkholes around the world, some of which happened in the US.IP: Logged |
