What is Places?
Places is a Facebook feature that allows you to see where your friends are and share your location in the real world. When you use Places, you'll be able to see if any of your friends are currently checked in nearby and connect with them easily. You can check into nearby Places to tell your friends where you are, tag your friends in the Places you visit, and view comments your friends have made about the Places you visit. Use Places to experience connecting with people on Facebook in a completely new way.

Who can use the Places feature?
At this time, the Places application is available to users in the United States with mobile access to the Facebook application for iPhone or touch.facebook.com. Places will be rolled out more broadly and to other mobile devices and the web in the future. Please make sure that you are using the most up-to-date software version for your iPhone, Android, or mobile device or the Places application may not function properly. Alternatively, you can access the Places application through your device’s web browser by following these steps:
1. Point your browser to http://touch.facebook.com.
2. Tap the Places tab.
3. When you are prompted to share your location, tap "Share Location."
If you are still experiencing problems, please note that you may not yet be able to use the Places application because it is a new feature that is being gradually rolled out. In the meantime, you can check The Facebook Blog for updates on product launches and other Facebook-related stories.

How do I access the Places application on my device?

1. If you're not on the home screen, tap the upper-left button to go to the home screen.
2. Select the Places application, designated by a red pin icon, from the home screen.

How do I share where I am with my friends?
To check in at a Place:
1. Access the Places application on your supported device.
2. Click "Check In."
3. Select the Place where you are from the Nearby Places list. If you don't see the Place name, type the name of the Place where you are into the "Search Nearby Places" box. Alternatively, you can toggle the left-right arrows on the right of the search box to display lists of other Nearby Places.
4. Write an optional description of what you are doing at the Place where you are checking in. You can also tag your friends at the Place where you are.
5. Click the "Check In" button again to share your visit.

How do I tag my friends at a Place?
You can tag your friends who are with you at any given location as long as you are checked-in and they have set their privacy settings so they can be tagged.
1. After you've selected a Place, click the "Tag Friends With You" link and choose friends from your friends list. Note that a friend is selected for tagging once there is a checkmark next to his or her name. If you uncheck your friend’s name, he or she will no longer be tagged.
2. Write an optional description of what you are doing at the place.
3. Click the "Check In" button to share your visit with your friends.

How are Places created?
Many locations have automatically been imported to the Places application. If there is no data available in your current location, you can create a new place from your phone.

How do I create a new Place?
To create a new place, follow these steps:
1. Access the Places application on your supported device.
2. Click "Check In."
3. Click the "Add" button to the left of the Places Names search box.
4. Enter a name for the new Place as well as an optional description of it. Then, click the "Add" button at the bottom right of the page.
5. You will then have the option to both write a description of what you are doing at the new Place, and/or tag your friends there
6. Click the "Check In" button to share your visit.
The default location for any new Place you create will be where you are currently located. Also, keep in mind that any Place that you create is public. This means that other people may see your created Place while browsing Facebook or the Places application.

How do I receive push notifications on my iPhone about friends who have checked in at nearby Places?
If you have push notifications for the Facebook application on the iPhone turned on, you’ll receive a push notification from friends that check in at nearby Places.
To turn push notifications on or off for Nearby Friends, take the following steps on your iPhone:
1. Navigate to the Settings panel on your iPhone.
2. Tap the Facebook application.
3. Choose whether to turn push notifications for Nearby Friends on or off.
Places uses the last Place you visited or the location you’re currently at to determine which of your friends are nearby. We’ll only send you a limited number of push notifications each day that are likely to be the most interesting to you. Please note that you won’t get push notifications about all of the Places your friends visit.

How do I "check out" of or remove a story about a Place I have visited?
In order to "check out" of or leave a Place, simply remove the story about the Place you have visited. Please follow these steps to do so:

2. Swipe your finger in a leftward motion over the story.
3. Tap the red "Delete" button to remove the story.

Privacy for Places
When is my location shared when using Places?
You control and own all of the information you contribute to Facebook, including your Places information. You decide how and with whom you share. Your location is never automatically shared: not when you use your mobile device, not when you use the Facebook application and not when you use the Places feature. Your location is only ever shared when you check in to a Place. You have full control over whether and with whom you share your check-ins.
In the "Customize settings" section of your main privacy settings, simply select the drop-down box next to "Places I check in to" and select one of the four recommended settings: Everyone, Friends and Networks, Friends of Friends, or Friends Only. Alternatively, you can make the locations you check in to visible to or hidden from specific people by clicking "Custom."
You can also control whether or not your friends can check you in to a Place by selecting "Enable" or "Disable" in the box next to "Friends can check me in to Places." Just as with photos, your friends can tag you at Places they check into. You can always remove your name when a friend tags you.

1. Select the "Account" drop-down menu in the upper-right of the screen.
2. Click "Privacy Settings."

How can I control whether I appear in "People Here Now" after I check in to a Place?
"People Here Now" is the section of a Place page where certain users that have checked in appear. This section of a Place Page is visible to friends and others who have checked in nearby. Inclusion in "People Here Now" is subject to your privacy settings. The default for whether "People Here Now" is turned on or off depends on your Master Control privacy settings. If you’d like to check or edit your settings, click here.
You can enable or disable your inclusion in "People Here Now" after you check in at a Place by navigating to the main Privacy Settings page and clicking the "Customize settings" link at the bottom of the page. Then, simply check or uncheck the "Enable" box next to "Include me in People Here Now after I check in."

How can I control whether my friends can check me in to Places?
The first time you use Places, or the first time a friend tries to tag you in to a Place with him or her, you will receive a notification asking you to share your location and allow friends to check you in to Places.
At any time, you can also adjust this setting by navigating to the main Privacy Settings page and clicking the "Customize settings" link at the bottom of the page. Then, simply choose Enabled in the dropdown box next to "Friends can check me into Places."
Just as with photos, we'll notify you when your friend checks in at a local place like a coffee shop. Also similar to photos, only your friends can tag you in Places and you may remove your name when a friend tags you.

How do I remove my name when a friend tags me in a Place?
If a friend has tagged you in a Place and you would like to remove your name, simply go to the Place story (you can find it on your profile, your friend's profile, or the Place page) and select "Remove Tag." You will no longer be connected to that Place through that story.
Remember that only your confirmed friends on Facebook are able to tag you in a Place if you have enabled them to do so in the "Customize settings" section of the main Privacy Settings page.

Do privacy settings work differently for Places users who are under 18 years old?
Yes. We reduce the visibility of information for anyone under 18. With the Places application in particular, minors will be able to share their locations only with their friends on Facebook. Even if a minor has set his or her information as visible to Everyone, the setting will automatically be restricted when using the Places application and only his or her friends will be able to see Places he or she has visited.

Will my applications have access to my location information?
Applications you install will respect your privacy controls when accessing your information. Some applications, like maps, need location information to function. In this case, applications must request and receive access through a clearly labeled and simple permissions dialog. Some applications and games need friends’ location information to function. For example, a map that displays your friends’ favorite activities in San Francisco will need to know where your friends have checked in. You always have control over what information is accessible through your friends.
If you don’t want friends’ applications to access places you’ve visited, go to your privacy settings. Under "Applications and Websites," click on "Edit Settings." Then, under "Info accessible through your friends," uncheck "Places I’ve Visited."

What does a Place page look like on Facebook? What information is included on a Place page?
A Place page shows you a map of where the Place is located, a list of friends who are currently checked in at the Place (if any), as well as a Friend Activity stream of other friends who have visited the Place in the past.
Please note that if you are checked in at a Place and you have not turned off "Include me in "People Here Now" after I check in" in your privacy settings, you’ll appear in the Here Now section of the Page, which is visible to your friends and other people checked in nearby. If the Place page has been claimed by the official representative, the Place page will contain additional relevant information about the Place if it’s available. You can post a story about the Place page to your profile by clicking the "Share" button on the bottom left of the page.

No, checking in is simply a way to let your friends know where you are and find friends that are near you. However, just as you can "Like" other Pages that represent your interests, you can click "Like" at the top of Place pages to connect with them and add them to the "Likes and Interests" section on your profile.

Someone created a Place that is offensive or violates my privacy or other rights. How do I report it?
To get to the Place page, you can either perform a search or you can navigate to the Place page by clicking through a friend's recent check in story. On touch.facebook.com and on the web, the report links are located at the bottom of the Place in question. On the iPhone app, the report links are located at the top right of the screen when viewing a Place.

I am a business owner. How do I take ownership of the Place where my business is located?
If you are the official representative of your business, please take the following verification steps to claim the Place on Facebook:
1. Search for the Place on Facebook you wish to claim as your business. If no Place exists for your business, you can create a new Place.
2. Once you locate the Place for your business, click the "Is this your business?" link at the bottom of the Place.
3. Complete the step-by-step verification process to claim your Place.
