During this massive heatwave moving through in the U.S.?

Without air conditioning for many folks, especially Northerners, this will be a prolonged struggle.

A dip in Lake Michigan is the evening cure for the four leggeds and I.

Heat wave plunges much of U.S. into a deep fryer

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fiery reds and oranges nearly covered the United States on meteorologist maps as a massive heat wave hit hard in much of the country on Saturday.

Temperatures averaged up to 15 degrees above normal, with most peaks in the 90s but triple digit heat expected to strike from Montana to New Mexico, according to lead meteorologists for The Weather Channel and The National Weather Service.

Paired with oppressive humidity, temperatures will feel even hotter, as measured by the heat indexes.

The NWS issued excessive heat warnings and watches for the Midwest from Texas to Canada, and heat index values over 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 C) are possible for portions of the central and eastern United States by the middle of next week.

Locations affected are expected to see temperatures and heat indexes of up to 117 degrees (47 C), including cities like Minneapolis where that is extremely rare.

Canada hhmm... apparently our branch of the Mother Nature Network didn't get the memo to heat things up it's been a rather rainy, chilly summer so far ( not that i'm complaining... am quite enjoying it )

It's in the 70's all week here by the beach. We're about to go for a walk in the sand.

Yes, I count my blessings. I don't do well in heat so my sympathy to those of you dealing with it.

It's very hot here in Ohio.
We get really bad humidity issues.
And we get high pollen counts, so anyone who is sensitve to that, is usually pretty miserable.
I've been the food source for many mosquitos this year, I guess b/c of the heavy rains we had and the high humidity.
(The Weather is my favorite thing to beech about, btw.

Anyway..
I don't have air conditioning.
My house is old, and the window units we did have at one time were super expensive to run, extremely noisy, and pretty ineffective.

So, it's ceiling fans, and table fans, and free standing fans.. lol
You just try and do the majority of your work either before midday or at night time.

I take a couple of cool showers per day as well, just to lower my body temperature.
And playing with the hose is never going to get old to me. Now that I have a grandson I have a good excuse to play in water!

Also, I buy wet wipes and keep them around.
When you get hot, you can run one under cool water and then put it on your neck, it cools you down and smells good too.

yes,yes and yes Gypsee

No air conditiong here either except an ancient dinky window one in the bedroom.

We usually only get 2-3 day snap of humidity/high heat index but this mess is the longest ever, 6-10 days so they say. 96 today....

This little ditty is the neatest thing and I picked up 2 at the hardware store.

Orbit Arizona Mist Flexible Cobra Mist Stand for Outdoor Cooling (mine is different shape but same principle)

http://www.sprinklersystemstore.com/p-829-orbit-arizona-mist-flexible-cobra-mist-stand-for-outdoor-cooling.aspx

The dogs are loving it and I have to move them over to get a sprinkle.

Stay cool and safe, hydrate, hydrate and then some more.

I don't like to run the air cond so much as I hate to pay for electricity when I realize that 2 mos Summer electricity bills could equal a season's wardrobe for my daughter, so I think it's money better spent elsewhere. If I run it, it has to be 100* + outside.

I do the cold showers in the summer and have lovely glowing skin to show for it We'll go outside to the pool otherwise, it's nice because the shade from the palm trees cover it perfectly in the afternoon. But when inside it is ice water, and cooling gel concoctions and nice face spray like a homemade rosewater blend, that is really refreshing. I also try to limit using the oven until it's dark in the summer, it's gas so it generates some extra heat from the vents.

But the best for indoors so far, that's really simple and you only have to do it once are those AMAZING window tint films they sell at home Depot. Completely worth the investment.

Hey there Juni, I do like that sprinkler/sprayer thing, and it's affordable as well!

Well guys, the news at 11 said we are in for a week long heatwave here in the Midwest, gulp, so.. guess I'll just have to sit inside on the comp and stay cool.
(darn it, I SO wanted to weed! )

One good thing about the weather is that you can make sun tea really quickly when it's this hot.
I mean, it's brewed in just a couple hours, as opposed to the spring where the stuff takes half the day.
Yay to Sun Tea.
Thank You Mr. Sun.

I remember heat in India, and then deal with it.

There's been pretty close to monsoons in Colorado though, crazy amounts of rain and lightning! No heat so far...

Hi all..

Its supposed to be in the 90s all week here in Utah. I do NOT do heat very well. Whats odd is the occasional thunderstorm and sprinkles of rain that come and go with it.

And I am SO spoiled. The house has central air kept at 70 F. My room tends to get warmer than the rest of the house so I have a big fan that blows on me while I sleep.

Gotta luv a good excuse to take a swim

Gypsee, look in local stores for the cobra sprinkler as they are all the rage right now.

The freakiest lightening storm hit last night. 45 minutes of strobe light lightening, unusual rumbles of thunder and straight line winds.

It woke me up and I thought it was a search helicopter, then the strangeness of it hit me and I thought all the Universal Code theories are true and the mother ship is here to pick us up...

It never cooled it down at all but rather increased the humidity.

We have three window air conditioners going - two in bedrooms, one in the living room, the internal fan (that would spread internal air, if we had it) and other fans. We need the air for the pets, and I get dizzy. We had a few summers without, years ago, and they're necessary - it's bad enough having to be stuck inside half the time, without being stuck in the basement, too.

Hi teasel

we just have fans in the house like Gypsee`s but the barns and housing for 4 leggeds have industrial fans. They suffer so in this heat. Especially the llamas and chickens.

We have a Speedway (convienence store/gas station) right down the road, and so getting a gi-normous slushie is also a good way to cool down.
Now, there can be a dangerous side effect...

BRAIN FREEZE.

If you drink it slowly you should be fine, but if you are like me, you cannot.
So, my 12 year old taught me THE CURE TO BRAIN FREEZE, OMG, I AM THE PARENT OF A GENIUS!

It really works, once you notice the frozen brain, just take your thumb and apply consistant pressure to the roof of your mouth, and voila'!!

Just suffering and hoping no power outages.
Damn meds make me more heat intolerant than usual. Almost landed in hospital from the heat last week. Frozen towels on neck, ice bottles. On that note, hot nauseated, dizzy...going down

I have lived in South Texas for 33 years...this Midwest farm girl has had to learn to do as the Romans do when in Rome..

The Mexicans hunker down, "siestas" were mainstream before air conditioning. Still today, you will see their culture neath trees in the heat of the day and come out later when it begins to cool off...

I lived without aircondtioning in my first coupla apartments....showered alot, sat neath fans, etc.

I am SO headed back up north, asap!

And after the heat I am used to year after year, usually 8 months out of the year....I will LOVE to be back home and atleast look forward to the cool of fall and the cold of winter!

Hi Terri

Right now you could confuse TX with the midwest heat wise !

The power grid is taking a hit and I would dial down my AC , but oh right, I don`t have central air
I can`t turn down fans on four leggeds but I can moderate my personal usage.

Blistering heat wave stressing nation's power grid

Published July 20, 2011
| Associated Press

NEW YORK – A lengthy, blistering heat wave that is blanketing the eastern half of the United States is putting significant stress on the nation's power grid as homeowners and businesses crank up their air conditioners.

Utilities say they're ready for high power demand and widespread electricity shortages or outages are unlikely. Lines and equipment are not fully taxed and there is more generating and transmission capacity available than usual because of the weak economy. Also, not many major storms are in the forecast, meaning fewer downed power lines.
