Any theories why some people do this..

When an individual accuses one of something they have never done, but the accusor does.

Projection of one's own issues onto someone who had nothing to do with the issues.

Or, perhaps the accusor may have not have acted out on the "issue" but is a hangup for him/her.

Projection.

What may be the mental process or the underlying psychology of this behavior???

My darn Scorp asc....always plumbing of the human psyche

Well, if you block off parts of you, they are blocked from your conscious mind, only. They are still alive in your unconscious mind. Hence, if people hate something with a passion, they often have blocked it in themselves.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_projection

Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person subconsciously denies his or her own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, usually to other people. Thus, projection involves imagining or projecting the belief that others originate those feelings.

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for self failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and by redirecting libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or "projecting," those same faults onto another person or object.

The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud - in his letters to Wilhelm Fliess, '"Draft H" deals with projection as a mechanism of defence' - and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud; for this reason, it is sometimes referred to as Freudian Projection.

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytical_psychology

Analytical psychology (or Jungian psychology) is the school of psychology originating from the ideas of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. His theoretical orientation has been advanced by his students and other thinkers who followed in his tradition. Though they share similarities, analytical psychology is distinct from Freudian psychoanalysis. Its aim is wholeness through the integration of unconscious forces and motivations underlying human behavior. Depth psychology, including archetypal psychology, employs the model of the unconscious mind as the source of healing and development in an individual. Jung saw the psyche as mind, but also admits the mystery of soul, and used as empirical evidence, the practice of an accumulative phenomenology around the significance of dreams, archetypes and mythology.

Another reason why people do this is that it's easier to see it on someone else than see it in themselves. By accusing you for something they basically have repressed in themselves, they try to deal with it (for themselves - you are not "there" at all).
Most people will stop at that point (calling the kettle) never asking themselves why they are bothered so much about what they accuse the other person. If they just took one step further and asked themselves that question, they would get to know a lot about themselves and would stop being pots who call the kettles back.

Answers are easy to find.

Asking the right question is harder.

Helps knowing exactly what to ask
