If so, what do you think of the show and the characters?

WARNING: SOME SPOILERS

*note: am editing because my opinion of the show is changing for the better*

I am finding myself re-hooked again as I've re-watched the last two episodes. The middle episodes left me, at times, a bit wanting, but my curiosity is piqued again. Rumplestiltskin's backstory ("Desperate Souls) really threw a lot of things into question, upon second viewing. I really think that perhaps my earlier quibble--that the characters weren't strong enough or subtle/complex enough--has been put to rest. Not only do we know that Rumple was [SPOILERS] a good human being, albeit cowardly, but it also, for me, raises questions about the other characters. The "good" ones: do they have a hidden darkness, just like Rumple has a hidden past of good (i.e., caring very much about his family and being against the practice of child soldiers)? I remember Snow White admitting in one episode that the Queen DID have a reason for hating her/that she actually DID destroy the Queen's happiness. It seems to me like this was not "just a misunderstanding" or the Queen overreacting, but that Snow, who is good, really did do something.

I'm wondering too, now, if some characters will switch sides or if some will have it revealed that they are not who they think they are. I'm wondering if a "good" character will be revealed as a villain, or if a "bad" character will be shown as actually being covertly working for the side of good.

Rumple, for me, is the hardest one to really predict, as I could see him either being the mastermind to everything or else could see him finding redemption, perhaps with death. I could see him playing both sides or being out simply for himself, or else finding a way to redeem himself, which he mentioned wanting to do right before he became the new Dark One.

The other thing that Rumpelstiltskin and Jiminy Cricket have made me think about is whether people are born good but are made bad only by circumstances. This seems to be suggested with both of them: Cricket was good but was forced into evil things due to his parents' bad influence and then chose goodness for himself, whereas Rumple was good (though cowardly) and chose evil, but with good intentions. So, it's been interesting thinking about it--about how much control we have over ourselves, and how much fate has, and how they meet.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

I know someone who was saying something similar about the evil Klaus, in the Vampire Diaries. They complained that he didn't come across nearly as imposing as his older brother, and that he isn't nearly as evil as he's supposed to be - more a crybaby than anything else.

Once Upon a Time was bugging me a bit, too. The one character who really remembers, ends up dead (unless they're going to magically bring him back at some point). I liked Jiminy fighting back, but it was also more obvious to me that they're trying to keep it very kid-friendly. Not all fairy tales have happy endings, so maybe the hunter won't be back. I wonder if we'll ever meet the girl with the red shoes, or vasilisa, or if they're sticking to the basics.

I wanted to catch up on Grimm, at some point, but the shows will soon disappear off the on-demand channel.

--the kid-friendly thing was bugging me too

I get really annoyed when things are dumbed down just because people might complain. My attitude is (a) if you don't like it, don't watch it/don't let your kids watch it and (b) parents should be open and honest about their kids and should talk shows over with them instead of making them intellectual dwarves. Better to discuss issues in a trusted environment than to risk misinformation and the consequences of that.

I definitely expect that Graham will be brought back--not a matter of 'if', but 'when'. My guess is that the Queen will probably reform by the end of the series and Rumpelstiltskin will probably die at the end. In other words, good guys win, bad guys lose.

ABC frustrates me as a network for a lot of reasons, but the dumbing-down thing is near the top of the list (right up there with forcing David Lynch to reveal Laura Palmer's killer too early on "Twin Peaks" and then canceling that show).

I have heard that they are going to feature "Beauty and the Beast" on the show.

I think it's going in the right direction as a show. Each week, it reveals more as the plot thickens and slowly unfolds. I see Rumplestilstkin reforming, not the Queen. Looking forward to Hansel and Gretel next week!

I can see either one reforming. I feel bad for Rumple because I don't think that he really understood what he was getting into--he mentioned wanting to use the dagger for good. I think that he was desperate and fearful and it pushed him to do something regrettable.

I plan on doing a re-watch if they start re-running some episodes and perhaps things that bugged me the first time around might make more sense with a review.

I LOVED last week's episode. That is one thing that I like--knowing character history. Plus, Rumple is by far my favorite and the best-acted character on the show in my opinion; fun to watch.

Just curious: what signs do you think the characters are? (this question is for anyone)

I have seen two episodes,I didn't like the style of shooting (cinematography). I guess that the Grimm Brothers film is too much of an influence. Still,I wanted to follow through, but I don't live in USA,and now I can't find the episodes.
Also,I feel it is very hard to come up with a fantastical story, since it requires much work : it is about creating a new universe in every aspect; And often good story isn't backed up with decent ratings in order for it to be continued.
So,I stick to Mad Men and House. (and some british shows that have few episode but are really worth waiting )

I like his character too. And he has an interesting backstory. The thing that happened with Geppetto's parents was a 'wham' moment, definitely! Certainly won't forget *that* one!

I also think that he's a good example to show that you can make your own choices in life as to who you want to be and don't just have to follow upbringing (in his case).

could you possibly download episodes from iTunes?

*edit: I myself found them there, but I'm not sure if it's different where you are. They have all up to the eighth episode. Apparently some people find that the episodes aren't uploaded fast enough for their liking, but they DO get uploaded. They're $2.99 (not sure what that is in your currency, but it's not bad).

Fox makes you wait a week for their shows. With ABC, it's the next day.

ABC might have it up, and it might show up on iTunes, too, if you want it before then.

I've seen clips on YouTube as well.

Not sure how it works outside of the US, though, if you're not watching from there.

*edit* WARNING: SPOILERS
I really do think that the show is picking up, and am happier now than in some previous episodes in that regard; I feel that this started happening last week a little bit. With the episode prior to the most recent one, I was a bit bored with the whole sheriff bit (it was pretty obvious to me that she would win, so I wasn't in suspense), but I think that the revelation of Rumple's backstory really raised a lot of questions for me, and the whole 'favor' thing is going to come into play--it's not going to be forgotten. I also am wondering now, too, just who is really good and who is really evil in this town, if some people could possibly switch sides (which would be awesome in my opinion, especially if it's subtly foreshadowed--enough to make sense in hindsight, but not so obvious that it takes away the surprise), and just considering all sides of the story. I can't wait to figure out what Snow did to make the evil queen hate her so much--I love, though, that Snow did admit in one episode that she (Snow) was to blame/implied that she really did do something and that the queen isn't just overreacting or that this is simply a misunderstanding.

Only thing that made me sad was the severe lack of Rumple in the most recent episode.

Blind Witch: "Butter or gravy?" Evil Queen: "I would've gone with the gravy." Looks like some of the stories have happy endings at least. I was right about Rumplestiltskin. He turned evil, because he lost his children. And the heart of a child turned him good again.
