Why I feel so bad about the murdering of Harambe, the gorilla at the Cincinnati zoo.
I dont really have much empathy for people being killed on a daily basis, but unfair treatment of animals makes me cringe. Ah, Harambe.. that shouldnt have been his ending.

I do find that interesting. Perhaps it's because the killing of the gorilla is rubbed in your face so that you care a lot more...I've noticed a lot of people are like that, the more coverage it gets, the more people care, the less coverage it gets, the less people care (and even with what people care intensely about because of the coverage, once the media drops it then people quickly forget it).

Or perhaps there's some other contributing factor, like billions of people (and over a billion little kids) in the world but less than a thousand gorillas of any age in the world (at least in the wild), with those in their native habitat relentlessly hunted by poachers and their habitat destroyed.

I wasn't there when it happened so I'm inclined to reserve judgment (Libra). But I do know the mother annoyed me by thanking God for the safety of her child. I'm sure she just did that to try to avoid public condemnation, by subtly reminding them of Christian behavior (forgiving and loving) as well as paint herself as a good person, but my gut reaction was that this happened because she trusted God to be her babysitter, and as she thinks God stepped in at the last minute (though not before) then she has learned almost nothing about this and her kids are at continued risk.

*SIGH* Because it now needs to be said (I've been on LL too long), I don't mean that all Christians do that. My Christian family sure as hell doesn't...and with the propane gas and guns everywhere, it's a damn good thing they keep a sharp eye on the children or they'd be a lot less of us (the saying is God helps those who help themselves). Granny said I scared her the most because while I was smarter in some ways, I was also very curious as a small child, and once I realized that my explorations and experiments (such as with say the propane oven) could get me spanked hard, I got sneaky about it, and she was scared I was going to seriously injure or kill myself before I was old enough to know better. If she'd depended on God to take care of me so she could just watch TV then I probably wouldn't alive today (and my death would be part of "God's mysterious plan"), but she has better sense than that.

PJ,

the mother's statement rubbed me the wrong way immediately after I read it. I wish she said something about the lost life of the innocent animal. Something of the sort that slips happen and noone is perfect but at least acknowledge the reality of the situation.

I dont think the coverage of the incident affected my judgement, I have always had a lot more empathy for animals and kids than for adult humans. Something to do with innocence and helplessness. I remember my heart sank with the first word that came out about the Harambe premature killing.

anyway..such is life.
Dont even want to start with the atrocities in the farming industry...depressing stuff

I do feel sad for the gorilla, but, is a life being imprisoned in zoo any better than death ?

I feel really bad for the gorilla too. I think the zoo was extremely negligent to have a barrier that a 3 year old child can easily climb over. That alone is absurd! I do think the mother should have been keeping a closer eye on her son, but I think there is an assumed level of safety when people go to the zoo. The animals are kept in, and the people are kept out. If a toddler can get in with little effort there is a serious safety issue. I was annoyed that the mom kept saying "Mommy's here", as the child was being dragged around. Where the hell was she when the kid was climbing into the enclosure? He kept saying he wanted to go in the water too, so she should have been watching him closer. I still think that the zoo needs better safeguards though. It's tragic that the gorilla paid the price for human negligence.

I think one reason that they shot the gorilla was the recent tiger attack where a zookeeper was killed. They used tranquilizers instead of shooting the tiger, and it took a while for them to subdue the tiger. By that time the woman had lost most of her blood and died. Had they shot the tiger she probably would've survived. That zoo faced a lot of criticism for using non lethal weapons, and that probably factored into their decision to shoot. I guarantee there would be a lot more public outcry if they tranquilized the gorilla, and then watched a 3 year old get torn to shreds on camera, while waiting for the drugs to kick in.

I love animals, but I don't like zoos. With the reality we're living in though, if it weren't for zoos most of these species would be extinct by now.

No charges filed against the mother:

It doesn't appear anyone else will be charged either.
