A wide awake citizen sent this to me by email. I thought it worth sharing.

Poverty in Our Cities.

City, State, % of People Below the Poverty Level

1. Detroit, MI 32.5%

2. Buffalo, NY 29.9%

3. Cincinnati, OH 27.8%

4. Cleveland, OH 27.0%

5. Miami, FL 26.9%

5. St. Louis, MO 26.8%

7. El Paso, TX 26.4%

8. Milwaukee, WI 26.2%

9. Philadelphia, PA 25.1%

10. Newark, NJ 24.2%

U.S. Census Bureau, 2006 American Community Survey, August 2007
What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961;

Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954;

Cincinnati , OH (3rd)...since 1984;

Cleveland , OH (4th)...since 1989;

Miami , FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor;

St. Louis , MO (6th)....since 1949;

El Paso , TX (7th) has never had a Republican mayor;

Milwaukee , WI (8th)...since 1908;

Philadelphia , PA (9th)...since 1952;

Newark , NJ (10th)...since 1907.

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats---yet they are still
POOR

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."
Abraham Lincoln

all I can say is when american citizens bought AMERICAN made cars, Detroit was thriving.

Unfortunately on the streets of Detroit begging for money is homeless veterans! you see at least 5 or more going to any event in the city..VETERANS should never be begging for bread on our streets. shame on us for not taking care of our veterans.

So, is the Left back to being the party of the poor now, Jwhop? I know this is one of the great issues you like to waffle on.

i repeat, i went to the site. there are rundowns of poverty by state, by ethnicity, etc. but i found no list of poverty in the cities as cited. also there is a more recent survey, why not use that?

and i certainly found no list of cities by mayor and party...

wasn't chester kowal the man who discovered chiron?

you're right, cpn, when people bought american cars detroit was thriving. that is why grosse pointe is full of millionaires...the city was too polluted for them so they moved out!

but the fact that american cars failed was a market-led phenomenon, people started to realize that european makes got better mileage, handled more precisely and took up less room - and cost less too!

in recent years SOME american cars have risen to the challenge, but then a lot of them had japanese motors which was not good for the companies here at home...

yeah they fell down on the technology end because everybody wanted the big SUV's and they ignored the economy trend way too long.

"Foiled Again and hoisted by me own petard"

thier idea of cost savings was to eliminate a reading light on the passenger side. (true)

engineers never were the most practical individuals.

yeah i just googled it....

reminds me of a joke....st peter goes up to god and tells him there are 10 detroiters at the gates of heaven...should he let them in????
god said ok....he comes running back a few minutes later, saying there gone, there gone....god said, the detroiters? st peter said, "no, the pearly gates"

stealing when they shouldda been buying!

btw - grosse pointe is actually pretty close to the pitts of hell, in fact, you have to drive through it to get there....mostly middle class now, the money all went to the burbs...
bloomfield hills...farmington hills, sterling heights and such...
you know, the kind of neighborhood where you have to pass a neighborhood petition to put up christmas decorations? UGH>>>you can keep it..

The numbers speak for themselves.

demoscats, those who claim to really, really, really care for people..especially the poor are those who presided over the most poverty ridden cities.

So, are demoscats brain dead stupid? Or is it possible they don't give a damn about the poor and only use the "poverty" issue as talking points?

Surely, no one who really, really, really cares about the poor would sit on their collectivist a$$es while at the same time doing all in their power to destroy the tax bases of their cities which deprives their citizens of jobs necessary to combat poverty.

this is hardly a litmus test.

the list is current, ie it doesn't mention how things were in the years between. perhaps all those years of democrats is not the ONLY factor responsible for the poverty rates there? detroit was hopping till the car business tanked, and i don't think that was the mayor's fault somehow! pittsburgh lost a lot of momentum for industrial reasons too. miami is full of cubans and a lot of them may not be reporting all their income...

can we see a list of the 10 least impoverished now? or are you going to keep jumping to conclusions on flimsy evidence?

Poverty rate goes up under Republicans, and goes down under Democrats. We've been over this a number of times in the past. The economy also does better under Democrats than Republicans. I am talking about the Presidency here, not city leadership.

speaking of which heard on the radio this morning that though the "rise" has slowed, the jobless rate is now up to 9.3%(app.), "the highest since 1983"

considering the republicans according to jwhop and REAGAN in particular was so fabulous, how come 3 years into HIS presidency the jobless rate was as high as it is now, less than a year into obama's, yet jwhop wants to write off obama as "failed" already?

not for any rational reason apparently...

The current unemployment rate is 9.7%
Unemployment rate hits 9.7%
216,000 jobs are lost in August.

It seems like only yesterday O'Bomber was saying...pass my stimulus/porkulus bill and unemployment won't go above 8%...otherwise unemployment might go as high as 9%

This guy needs his crystal ball refurbished.

Yes, but unfortunately, it`s because so many millions have run out of benefits and are not counted in the "slowing"

MI has an unemployment rate in the neighborhood 15 %
