Jared Loughner:

He regularly smoked marijuana, and while there is only a small correlation between having a mental illness and committing violence, that correlation becomes much more significant when mental illness is combined with drug use, according to John Monahan, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia School of Law.

yes, in some cases marijuana can even lead to mental illness- http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/natureofthings/2010/downsideofhigh/, but i live in a town where roughly 50% of people regularly smoke weed and it is an extremely peaceful and creative town.

Woah Cakes,

That's fine that your town is fine with pot, but I think it's irresponsible to say that marijuana is harmless (for all people). It's just not true.

i never said it was. au contraire actually. the documentary is really intesting because it points out that thc levels have been altered significantly since the 60s and shows the correlation between these higher levels and potential psychosis.

i see! it's an interesting substance because it can have the opposite effect on so many, too, and has many medicinal properties.

I'm interested in people handling drugs responsibly, both alternative and pharmaceuticals...

It's irresponsible to tell people that ANY DRUG is completely safe.

Did you know that most mass shootings have been perpetrated by men? So CLEARLY being a man makes you crazy, amirite.

I sincerely doubt MJ caused this kid's psychosis. He could've been crazy to begin with. If he were an alcoholic would you have made this topic?

Amowls,

I sincerely doubt MJ caused this kid's psychosis.

Are you a scientist? A doctor? Or, just a MJ user?

It's fine if you want to doubt all you want, but the fact is WE DON'T KNOW.

This guy looks nuttier than squirrel crap, and I think that chronic MJ use should NOT be ruled out as a contributing factor in whatever type of psychosis he is suffering from.

I'm just pointing out your logical fallacy based on a preconcieved notion you have about marijuana. I don't smoke weed, for the record.

And for you all you know I could be a doctor. Would that make you change your mind? You could just google instead of sitting here spouting opinions as fact, too.

Very ambitious of you, but I have no preconcieved notion.

The only preconcieved notion here is the one YOU have about people who will post articles about the links between smoking weeds and psychosis.

And what notion might that be? lol

Basically, weed, in moderate doses, is safe. Weed in heavy doses is also safer than alcohol.

Question: Have you smoked weed before?

Lastly, before you give me too much credit for spouting opinions, reference the first post of this thread...

He regularly smoked marijuana, and while there is only a small correlation between having a mental illness and committing violence, that correlation becomes much more significant when mental illness is combined with drug use, according to John Monahan, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia School of Law.

That was a Time's Magazine quote, that spurred the idea of this thread.

That was not my opinion.

I don't believe that you are a responsible person. To say that all people can safely smoke weed in "moderate" doses, even people with a disposition for mental illness is reckless.

As far as me smoking weed? That's none of your business, really.

obviously nothing is good for everybody. even common foods cause allergic reactions in some people.

but i think you are putting the cart before the horse...as in, being psychotic often leads people to self-medicate and as marijuana is relaxing, someone hyper and agressive and paranoid would probably find it relieved his internal stress.

i'm not saying this is fact, but that MANY - for instance - ADHD kids self-medicate with booze and drugs. this does not mean the booze and drugs cause their ADHD...

i have noticed over the years that men seem to be better able to carry on a normal day, in terms of energy and focus, on weed, than women do. this is not a hard and fast rule either, but it does seem possible that testosterone overrides some of the "falling out" effects of weed.

I am a "everything in moderation" type of person. No one would ever describe me as reckless. And I doubt you have ever smoked marijuana because then you would know it is not chemically addictive and therefore very easy to take one hit and not take another which lends itself well to moderate use.

Whatever. Whole point is he was crazy and weed didn't make him that way.

I agree with you. But, this is not the way Marijuana users and supporters present their information.

They claim the drug is COMPLETELY HARMLESS and that there never, ever, ever was a guy who smokes pot, and then goes on to do a violent crime...

I promise I've heard this enough times to be relevant.

That's fine, Amowls. Go ahead and draw your conclusions, because the only type of person who would post a discretionary tale about chronic marijuana use would be a non-marijuana user?

There's a link between psychosis and marijuana. Like it or not.

And weed hysteria is linked to people who have never smoked it.
