The similarities between Texas Senator Ted Cruz and 16th-century astronomer Galileo Galilei are remarkable, according to Cruz.

In an interview on Tuesday with the Texas Tribune, the newly-minted presidential candidate compared himself to the Galileo when discussing, of all things, whether climate change was actually occurring.

"Today the global warming alarmists are the equivalent of the flat-Earthers," Cruz said. "You know it used to be it is accepted scientific wisdom the Earth is flat, and this heretic named Galileo was branded a denier."

Cruz says he trusts satellite data that he believes shows that the Earth's temperatures have held steady over the past 17 years.

"Anyone who actually points to the evidence that disproves their apocalyptical claims, they don't engage in reasoned debate. What do they do? They scream, 'You're a denier.' They brand you a heretic," Cruz added.

The overwhelming majority of climate scientists say that global warming is occurring and that human activity has been one of the driving forces behind it. On March 20, PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning project that fact checks the news, rated a similar satellite data claim of Cruz's "Mostly False," saying it ignored a longer-term trend.

Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, who died in 1642, was an early proponent of the idea that the Earth rotates around the Sun, for which he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Representatives for Cruz declined a request seeking clarification.

Cruz maintained that the U.S. shouldn't turn to government regulation that would raise energy prices in order to try and combat climate change.

"We shouldn't be causing millions of hard working men and women to have their energy bills go through the roof," he said. "It causes real harm and suffering when people all across this country lose jobs because the federal government wants to take control of aspects of our lives."

PolitiFact has lost all credibility with this one.

PolitiFact has been getting it wrong for many years. They're an arm of what used to be the St Petersburg Times newspaper. A no class leftist rag which left a stench in the air so foul they had to change their name to...The Tampa Bay Times. By any name, they still stink and so does PolitiFact.

Odds and probabilities decree that one day PolitiFact will get something right. On that day, we'll all be surprised.

Renewables have been a source of job growth, not loss. Cruz wants to Compare himself to Galileo, why not? His daddy claims he has been anointed by the lord to rule america. Yet not one person who mocked Obama for saying"we are the ones weve been waiting for" seems upset by this blatant comparison of Cruz to anointed kings and iconic thinkers.

He cant even get thru a speech without contradicting himself. He pretends that he is being forced onto Obamacare having cost his wife the family coverage offered by Goldman Sachs. He doesnt want Nasa studying Earth but stands on "science" re the climate.

Where's his birth certificate? Hmmm?

Hahaha I completely missed the most glaring part of Cruz's idiocy...tho there is a rundown of all his blunders in the link (complete with video)

I doubt whether Galileo would be flattered to be compared with Cruz, who proved he doesn't even know what Galileo is famous/was pilloried for as "heretic".

Before reading the answer, reread what he says about Galileo's out of box thinking and see if you can spot it?

Yeah, we've seen those jobs and jobs costs to US taxpayers from O'Bomber paying his campaign contributors off with federal government loans and loan guarantees.

Some of these so called "renewables jobs" cost taxpayers $500,000 each...or more. And I'm not talking about executive salaries here. I'm talking about average job costs across the company workforce.

These so called "green energy projects" would have to improve several orders of magnitude to rise to the level of boondoggles.

Really and how many trillions was the total then? In Canada Harper has just placed taxes on imported solar components that will make solar inaffordable and boost use of fossil fuels. But in many other countries

Renewables are outstripping fossil and nuclear power more and more by the day. I wonder what the original costs were for nuke power stations?

Were you unable to find the joke in Cruz's self-equation with Galileo yet? Apart from comparing himself to a standout genius in the first place, that is?

And then theres his disingenuous claim that he HAS to go on Obamacare since his wife is on leave from Goldman Sachs and their family coverage for employees.

Little nod to you and your "liberal media" neurosis in there too

"Renewables have been a source of job growth, not loss..."

No they haven't. They've cost taxpayers billions of dollars and O'Bomber's campaign contributors who received federal loans or loan guarantees went bankrupt and all those so called "created" jobs were lost..along with the billions in taxpayer money.

Do try to stay on subject!

Throwing crap at the wall to see if any sticks is a losing strategy.

Solyndra was a much publicized failure..due to unforeseen market factors.. I know. But solar as a field is not failing but succeeding. In China wind power is outstripping the total nuclear output in the US. In other countries solar, wind and wave tech are advancing by geometrical leaps and bounds..except where they are artificially held back by big energy companies who refuse to change with the times and technology, or government, like Harper (the bookburning treaty bresking conservative you said was going to save Canada ) ..
