Hey everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a good product or medicine for clearing mucous/phlegm on the chest? I've mostly gotten over my flu, but I'm having trouble getting rid of the excess mucous from my chest and sinuses. There's no infection (when I manage to cough anything up at all, it's white) but it's just a matter of how to get rid of this annoying stuff when I can't cough it up! I'm still taking vitamin C, garlic and zinc, so I'm wondering if there's anything homeopathic or something like that?

Neti pot to saline flush the sinus. Red pepper and black pepper in hot broth. Menthol/camphor on chest. Have someone tap on your back with a chop chop motion, or deeply massage, as you cough gently.

add echinecea to that zinc and stuff. In South Texas, we have PICO DE GALLO. It is a mix of onion, tomato, cilantro, and jalapeno peppers. Chop up fresh in equal amounts-not as much cilantro-and eat at leasta couple tablespoons each day. The vitamins and capsican will keep many germs and viruses away, esp. those related to the mucous membranes. Of course some cannot handle this but I haven't had a cold or even a sore throat since I started to eat this YEARS ago. Also, those polite enough to cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, do not use hands to do this. Use the inside of elbow instead-keeps hands from passing the germs. Hope you feel better soon. love, Tuxedo MEowIP: Logged |

Thanks! I haven't gotten around to doing any of this yet - waiting for payday so I can buy stuff. But I'm just wondering about something else... I've found that if I eat mildly spicy food (eg Thai or Malay), after I've eaten I can cough up the phlegm. Sorry I know that's gross! I'm wondering if there's something in those spices that works for me, OR is it a case of these foods just creating more phlegm (which I then happen to cough up)?IP: Logged |

The phlegm that built up on your lungs is coming out, it's a self-cleaning process. You can speed it up if you receive professional massage (tapotements in particular) as follow-up therapy after pneumonia.been there done that* in December get well soon! IP: Logged |

Yep I notice it's starting to clear out a little bit more, a few times day now... thank goodness! Thanks Peri! Glad to hear you got over your phlegm buildup - wish I could afford the professional massage, I'll just have to make do with my body's natural cleansing process! I've been taking olive leaf extract the past few days for a general boost, maybe that will help? IP: Logged |

Any natural expectorant will be of help too, I think. http://www.health911.com/remedies/rem_coughs.htm IP: Logged |
