California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a groundbreaking bill which will allow transgender youth to use whatever bathroom and participate on whichever sports team they believe matches their gender identity.

As the Associated Press reported last month, California's Assembly Bill 1266 gives students in public K-12 schools the right "to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities" based on their self-perception, regardless of their birth gender. Although Massachusetts, Connecticut, Washington and Colorado have adopted policies designed to protect transgender students, California becomes the first state to address the issue with a statewide law, Fox News pointed out.

News of Brown's Aug. 12 signing was confirmed in an email to HuffPost Gay Voices from Mark Snyder of the Transgender Law Center.

Scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2014, AB1266 was authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano and passed the California State Senate and Assembly earlier this summer, according to San Diego Gay and Lesbian News.

Meanwhile, Brown's move quickly drew praise from the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

"I'm so excited that California is making sure transgender students have a fair chance to graduate and succeed," Calen Valencia, an 18-year-old transgender student, said in an email statement. "I should have graduated this year, but my school refused to give me the same opportunity to succeed as other boys. Now other transgender youth won't have to choose between being themselves and graduating high school."

Echoing those sentiments was Masen Davis, Executive Director of the Transgender Law Center. “Now, every transgender student in California will be able to get up in the morning knowing that when they go to school as their authentic self they will have the same fair chance at success as their classmates," Davis said in an email.

More conservative pundits felt differently. "This radical bill warps the gender expectations of children by forcing all California public schools to permit biological boys in girls restrooms, showers, clubs and on girls sports teams and biological girls in boys restrooms, showers, clubs and sports teams," Randy Thomasson of savecalifornia.com told Fox News. "This is insanity."

Can people under 18 get surgery for sex change?

I've only met a transgender once in my life.

I'm genuinely wondering if someone doesn't have their private parts changed to the gender they want how showering and changing in front of people with different private parts would work?

My heart goes out to transgenders for their struggle.

I don't think you can get a sex change under 18 in the US, but maybe in thailand you can?

I've seen interviews with parents who sent a child to school as another gender than they were born and considered transexual. I can't recall if any surgery was done with that.

The one case I know of surgery being used was in response to a circumcision gone wrong (a reason not to allow hospitals to circumcise!). Unfortunately he wasn't really transgendered in any way and ended up committing suicide miserable in a female body.

My daughter was not a happy camper.

The thought of that one pushy boy following her into the bathroom made her wish for homeschool.

Haven't heard anymore about it lately though.

I haven't heard anything else from her since.

If there was a problem with her or even which way the schoolyard sentiment was going, she would let me know.

So, so far those fears were groundless.

No, it was an ongoing debate at the time.

When it passed, she came home wishing to be home schooled again, as she feared that boy might take advantage of the leniency. She's had trouble with him.

So far, it has been alright.

I refused to sign a petition against it, stating quite honestly that I wasn't sure where I stood on the issue.

If that boy takes advantage of that leniency...let all the other boys know that he considers himself female.

No, they won't start doing the same (and even if they did then that little "loophole" will get plugged fast), instead that boy will learn the joys of how alive homophobia (*) remains in school, even in California.

(*No one explain to me the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity, I'm obviously basing this on the ignorance of the majority who DON'T know that. It probably wouldn't make a difference anyway as the boy code is actually more against boys being feminine than gay anyway, that is gay boys would have it easier to even feminine straight boys if the distinction was understood by all.)

I would never encourage kids to do that sort of thing Pixie.

I've had enough issues in my family with my own preferences to never promote any sort of finger pointing for any reason.

Teachers aren't stupid, and if there was a problem, that girl knows how to speak out, let me tell you...

The part of California in which I currently reside is not very tolerant of differences either.

Will the bill hold up under Trumps reign?

This is a CA bill. Obama made it national with his EA. Trump will probably squash that.
