That's the Afrikaans name. It's fried bread dough. It can be stuffed with sweet or savory such as apricot jam, cheese, ground beef etc.

3 cups cake flour
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp white sugar
1 tbsp yeast
1 tbsp margarine
300 ml lukewarm water
3 tbsp cooking oil

Mix flour, salt and sugar together and then
add yeast.
Dissolve margarine in lukewarm water and add to flour mixture.
Mix and knead for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Cover with a cloth and stand in a warm place for an hour.
Divide dough into 8 portions and mould into balls.
Brown in cooking oil until dough balls sound hollow when tapped.

Nice contribution, Charm
I'm going to try it this week, but I'm going to make the dough in my dough machine first.

Do you deep fry them, or add a small layer of oil in a deep pan?

You can use a pot..no deep fryer needed.

Make it and let us know how it came out.

I would like to try both savory filling and sweet. I found a few good recipe ideas.

I saw a youtube video of the bread dough cooking in oil. It comes out with a natural hollow cavity for filling, very cool.

Made me look

Sounds so good and I think I would use a sausage type filling. Maybe the sausage with seasoned bread stuffing, onions, mushrooms and lots of sage.

I wonder what the word "stuffed" sounds like in South African language, coming from Dutch origins... Translate "stuffed" fat cakes. ?

(Sometimes I wonder a lot of things but I'm too lazy to look them up)

Stuffed can also be "opgestopte" in Afrikaans but when used in a different context.
