Chinese Astrology is much more complex than just the popular year of birth (which is comparable to Sun Signs). It goes way deeper than that. More to follow.

Randall I am back for more to follow about this interesting mysterious brown owl school. I like mystery. You are very mysterious. I did some chinese stars that went deeper than just the year birth and it was this red book with a dragon on it and it had different points of stars in chinese astrology. I had a very favourable chart but i have forgotten the exact details of the points of chinese stars and i got the book from i think a second hand book shop for less than a few buck of roos what they call a shrimp on the barbie in aussie slang. i had a purple star and a beauty star for beauty and a purple star for north star. the book chinese astrology was very detailed and indepth and i did my homework like a brown owl and studied like a grey owl that does and sees 360 degrees from the back of ones brown owl. you are funny randall i have mental images of you dancing with a pussycat and a rabbit in a pussycat secret hiding place. I hope you don't get rabbits and pussycats comes back to you. I want pussycats and rabbits but i am a piggy and dream of piggies rolling in mud and i laugh those piggies rolling in mud as they are pig signs in Chinese astrology. I read white book on Chinese astology and studied it like a brown owl with glassess that can see forever. That's about it that i have studied in Chinese astrology. Can you help Randall to go deeper than i don't what but than deeper.

China has one of oldest civilizations in the world, and Astrology was present very early on. At first, Astrology and Astronomy were inseparable. You can still see a respect for the esoteric arts throughout China even today. For example, many of the pharmacies there also have a herbal/natural therapy section as well. Chinese Astrology was originally just used for nations, and only during the Christian era did it expand to include individuals. No one knows where its roots come from, but unlike Western Astrology which is always changing, Chinese Astrology has remained the same for millenia (with the exception of expanding to include individuals). The legend has it that Buddha invited all of the animals to visit him, and only 12 showed up. To thank them, he gave each of them a year in the order in which they showed up.

Chinese Astrology at its most basic consists of the 12 animal Signs. These Signs are not based on the position of the Planets like Western Astrology. They are instead based upon the year of birth, and they always appear in the same order. The cycle repeats itself every 12 years. Since Chinese Astrology is based on the lunar year, it will begin on a different date each year. This is important, because if you go to a Chinese restaurant and look at the placemats they give you on the table, you could have your Sign wrong if you were born in January or February, since they lump them into full years without taking into account the date the Chinese year actually starts.

The next most important part of Chinese Astrology (after the Signs) are the Elements. Astrology has four Elements, but Chinese Astrology actually has five. These are based upon the five Planets that could be seen by the Chinese Astronomers. Yes, Chinese Astrology refers to the Planets! How cool is that? Water is ruled by Mercury, Metal is ruled by Venus, Fire is ruled by Mars, Wood is ruled by Jupiter, and Earth is ruled by Saturn (my fave). Each Element has positive and negative qualities. Pages could be written on the characteristics of each, but I will type just a few keywords. Water can be either artistic, expressive, sensitive, caring, understanding, sympathetic, and persuasive or it can be illogical, fearful, stressed, nervous, clingy, dependent, and manipulative. Metal can be either protective, inspirational, determined, romantic, disciplined, dependable, and steadfast or it can be inflexible, critical, angry, depressed, self-righteous, overly competitive, and single-minded. Fire can be either cheerful, passionate, loving, optimistic, decisive, courageous, and charismatic or it can be cruel, impatient, reckless, stubborn, demanding, extreme, and destructive. Wood cas be either compassionate, sociable, extroverted, ethical, practical, cooperative, and inspiring or it can be frustrated, violent, temperamental, cold, unfeeling, pessimistic, and lacking energy. Earth can be either peaceful, stable, practical, logical, objective, patient, and methodical or it can be smothering, confining, anxious, overly cautious, fixed in opinions, rigid, and slow thinking.

Each year is ruled by a different Element, which alters the energy of the animal Sign. For example, 2012 is a Dragon year, but it is the Water Dragon. One can look at the Element to determine how best to prosper in that year. See the Topic on 2012 Dragon Year for more info on that. There are 60 different combinations when you multiply the 12 Signs by the Elements. This is known by the Chinese as the 60-Year Cycle. We are currently in the 78th such cycle. To further complicate things, each Sign also has its own Element. This is true of the animal no matter what year it is. Pig, Rat, and Ox are Water. Tiger, Rabbit, and Dragon are Wood. Snake, Horse, and Goat are Fire. And Monkey, Rooster, and Dog are Metal. Earth (Saturn) doesn't rule any of the Signs, because only the other four were considered natural Elements. Read over the chracteristics of your Elements to learn to overcome the negative traits and accentuate the positive ones.

According to Chinese philosophy, the entire Universe can characterized within two forces: Yin and Yang. This covers people, nations, inanimate objects, foods, and everything else that exists. There is a force within all living things that brings the essence of Life. This is called Chi. The Japanese have a similar philosophy but refer to it as Ki. Life is a struggle to reach the balance of the Yin and Yang without an excess of either. When there is an excess of one over the other is when Chi becomes blocked and sickness occurs. The entire Universe is so balanced. For example, there are both stars dying and stars being born at this very moment. There are black holes collapsing under the weight of infinite gravity, and there are white holes spilling the collapsed matter into a parallel Universe on the other side. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, so each Universe remains in perfect balance to another. People wrongly assume that Yang is male and Yin is female. They are associated with genders, but neither is mutually exclusive. Each contains within itself the seed of the other. Yang is a masculine force, but women possess it. Likewise, Yin is a feminine force, and men possess it. The two complement one another. Neither is more important than the other. Together they form the whole of existence.

Every Sign is either Yin or Yang. Yin is represented by the Moon. Yang is represented by the Sun. Yin is black, water, night, passive, and no. Yang is white, fire, day, active, and yes. Compatability is based upon the Yin and Yang as well as the Inner Companion (see that Topic for more info). As I stated, each Element has both positive and negative qualities. Each Sign is naturally inclined toward either the negative or the positive. Yin is negative. Yang is positive. If more expressive of the negative, those Signs require more work. For example, the Rat is a Yang water animal, so it naturally expresses the positive of the Water qualities. Pigs are a Yin Water animal, so they naturally express the negative Water traits, and those things should be worked on. The Yin Signs are the Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, and Pig. The Yang Signs are the Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog.

It should also be noted that just because you are born under Yin, that doesn't mean you have to struggle. Your Inner Companion could be Yang...making for a well-rounded individual.

Chinese New Year: Horoscope predictions for 2012
By Caitlin McCormack | Shine from Yahoo! Canada – 22 hours agoEmailPrint

(Thinkstock)
The most important traditional Chinese holiday, this year’s Chinese New Year begins on January 23, 2012. This marks the year of the water dragon, with people born under this sign noted for being unafraid of challenges and willing to take risks.

We’ve rounded up some predictions for all the signs in the Chinese zodiac for the coming year to help you better navigate the coming months.

Not sure what your sign is? Visit this website to enter your birthday and find out.

Rat

“This should be a year that goes for the Rat, but be aware that things will be difficult at first and then it gets better,” writes Sherman Tai, Fortune Teller and Feng Shui Master “However, if the Rat is willing to work hard, be adaptable, do more and learn more, then pleasing results can be achieved in finances and career.”

Ox

“This is a good year for lovers and those who are single,” says FengShuiDIY.com, noting that people born under this sign could make new friends and even find their beloved in this year. Oxes should be mindful of any digestive issues this year. Oxes should also have luck in financial matters this year, according to Astrology.com.

Tiger

If you’re a Tiger, don’t plan on making any big changes this year, notes Tai. “This is not a year to make changes, especially ones that are impractical and beyond the capability of the Tiger,” he writes, “It is more ideal for the Tiger to stay with status quo.”

Rabbit

The nervous tendencies of Rabbits could be sent into overdrive this year, according to Astrology.com, so try focusing your energies on “high-intensity activity such as Bikram yoga or marathon-running. Channel nervous energy into healthy outlets, and keep an eye on your nutrition.”

Relationships are also touchy for the Rabbit this year according to Tai, with “Disagreements and differences in goals and direction between the Rabbit and his/her partner, leading to the possibility of an affair.”

Dragon

In 2012, those born in the year of the Dragon will experience a significant amount of change in their life, according to Tai, and “Participating in events and celebrations with friends and family can also help in improving your luck and your mentality.” Dragons should be extra careful as they are likely to face injury easier, says FengShuiDIY.com.

Snake

While last year might have been favourable to the Snake, 2012 is likely to bring more success their way, according to Astrology.com. “Strike out in new directions. Be daring. Let yourself get swept up in the high-flying Dragon's enthusiasm.”

Tai writes that career is an area where Snakes will see much prosperity. “There will be a new opportunity arising for you, so bring up your courage and consider taking that chance.”

Horse

Beware of office gossipers this year, Tai warns horses. “In particular,” he writes, “In your success, it is important to not be arrogant, but be modest and humble, lest you risk provoking the jealousy of coworkers who may create gossip against you and want to sabotage your success.

This year could bring big changes to the Horse’s love life, says Astrology.com. “There's a good chance you'll hear wedding bells or see the dazzle of a new romance lighting up your life.”

Goat or Sheep

“This is year with a lot of hardships and few returns,” writes Tai. “When good comes, don’t neglect to share these successes,” he says. This year is a good one to work abroad, if you’ve ever had the inclination to do so.

When it comes to health, 2012 is a great time for those born under this sign to dabble in mind-body pursuits such as yoga and meditation or strengthen their relationship with nature, according to Astrology.com.

Monkey

“Be very careful when signing contracts and making deals,” writes FengShuiDIY.com, as 2012 can involve disputes and even fraud for Monkeys. Relationship-wise, 2012 is a favourable year for a Monkey to being a lasting romance, get engaged or even start a family, according to Astrology.com.

Rooster

Get ready for a luck year, Roosters! “The luck for those born in the year of the Rooster is not bad this year because lucky stars shine on this zodiac sign,” writes Tai, but you must stay motivated if you want to see results. Astrology.com notes that a strong mind and healthy body will be necessary if you want to meet your goals this year, with a hard workout the perfect way to relieve any excess stress.

Dog

“Drive carefully and beware when using sharp tools,” says FengShuiDIY.com, as 2012 is a year of personal injuries for the Dog. Also, “Spend wise and do not gamble.” Not all is lost for the Dog, however, “If the Dog can take a normal attitude and not be impulsive, follow a straight path, carefully plan, improve self-value and networking, good may follow,” writes Tai.

Pig

Pigs might find the pace of this year a bit fast at times, but if they can keep up, it will be a very good year indeed, according to Astrology.com. “It's time to take risks, and you want to be especially bold when it comes to education, travel, networking and communication, as these can all flourish in a Water year.”

When if comes to finances, Tai writes that pigs should “Learn to save for a rainy day and to avoid spending frivolously, risky investments and gambling. If the Pig does not manage money well this year, there may be large unforeseen expenses around midyear that the Pig has to deal with.”
