From what limited knowledge I have of astrology I understand that saturn return happens approx 29 years, so since I was born in 1980 that would make my Saturn return around 2009?

But I see that in 2012 Saturn entered Scorpio...is this when my Saturn return started? Or did it start around 2009, then moved into scorpio so I get to have 7 years of Saturn hell?

You will start to feel it when it is within 3 degrees orb of your Natal Saturn. It will pass over your Natal Saturn making an exact conjunction which is when you will feel it strongest.

Then it will probably retrograde back and make a second pass, giving you a second chance to take notice.

After it clears, say 3 degrees past your Natal planet you will not feel it as intensely, but if you ignore taking action during the transit, you may feel its effect as Saturn continues to activate the house and sign that it currently is in.
