Is a separating aspect a good or bad thing (for me, in this case)?

No I don't believe he's in love with you. You are Mercury he is jupiter. You are in his 12th house and combust. You are also in his rulership which shows you have very strong feelings for him but as Mercury he is not receiving you. If we make you the moon, you are then in his 7th which shows some accidental dignity by him. He has feelings for you but these feelings are too weak right now to indicate he is in love with you.
