I grew up with a Catholic background, but have always loved astrology from a young age, as well as an interest in Wiccan/Magick.
If you feel like sharing, what was your background?

Hi Pixie, I grew up a preacher's kid. When my real mom divorced her husband, she married another preacher. They're very uptight and conservative and hate my beliefs-- even more than they hated me marrying into a strong Mormon family and becoming Mormon.   ------------------

I've had an interest in astrology since i was 8 or 9. My Mommy's an astrologer and that's what got me into it. We're Mormon. Hey, check out Teen Spirit!   ------------------

I'm being raised loosely Christian,and I put up with because
1)the Church we go to is nice and I enjoy the services even though what they're saying isn't very important to me
2)There's a great Youth Group,not to much religion but lots of fun and great people
3)I don't have a choice.
My mom is very into Rudolph Steinerian theosophy,but I discovered astrology and Linda Goodman through "chance"(hardly!)and from there,went onward and upward.Mom and I aren't studying the same thing,have different opinions on some things but agree on others; I'm free to do whatever I want spiritually,as long as she can drag me to Brainwashing Class(ie,Confirmation)when she wants to.She had me Baptized more or less against my will  and even though it wasn't that bad of a decision,I still resent it.

Grew up in a family where I didn't go to church and I was lucky, my 2 older bros had to go to Sunday School; was an atheist until the age of 16 when things were happening that I couldn't explain rationally/logically, and then stumbled upon Cheiros' Book of Numerology at the local bookstore and it went from there. The black sheep of the family, including extended because I'm the only one that believes these things. People I associate with don't understand me because of my beliefs/ideals and some of the topics I discuss are too over their heads, I also think it's because people don't want to think these days and would rather have all the information pre digested for them through the media. My mother had an intrest in astrology so I was kinda raised around it. When I become Mormon at 15yr.old they told me I shouldn't bother with it. Astrology has always felt right to me whether the sign suits a person or not. I'm an inactive member at the moment and I have alot of trouble ajusting and trying to make up my mind at the moment. I've always had an intrest in Wicca/Pagan ,but that too is also forbidden in the church. I find it a little funny that there are other Mormons on this site though. It was to say the least unexpected, but not a displeasure. If anyone can offer advice for my troubles I'm listening loud and clear.

What an interesting topic! Thanks Pixie!  Everyone's answers so far are really unlike I would have guessed! Auriel: I am suprised you say you are Mormon because all of the Mormon friends I have do not really accept astrology or my spirituality much. Maybe I am just misinformed about the Mormon religion, or are there different denominations? Anyway, I think it's wonderful that you successfully blend the two 
As for me, well my father was Catholic but never pushed it on us. I had a stepmother who kinda did in that we had to read Bible stories and pray. As I became a teenager, my stepmother was no longer part of my life but I briefly attended a Seventh Day Adventist school mainly because it was close to us and my father wanted me in a private school. I didn't get on well in Bible class there because I had already been introduced to Eckankar by a girlfriend of mine and I was also very into science... ahem, it was tough.
From there, I was an au pair for a Jewish family for a year and observed all of their traditions like shabbat and keeping a kosher kitchen. Eventually I had a 6 year live-in relationship with a Jewish man, although he wasn't too religious, we did celebrate Hanukah and shabbat, albiet mildly. I think that is as much as I've been exposed to personally, however I have lots of friends of MANY different religions, so I make an effort to learn about them. I feel most comfortable being agnostic because I have a hard time limiting my beliefs and I truly, honestly cannot say I know certain things for a fact... not yet 
I would also be interested in hearing how everyone else is able to combine their traditional beliefs with esoteric ones... if you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know.

I was raised Catholic by a strict practicing Catholic mother (you go to hell if you believe in birth control) and a father who only set foot in church for funerals, weddings and his children's sacraments.
I am raising my children Catholic, but in a lighter manner. Less rules and guilt.IP: Logged |

Pixie.........Queen.........I am flattered  that you both took the time to read my own little "mini Gooberz." Thank you....now I feel that you both know me a lot better *sigh*..and I'm looking forward to knowing you both better, too. Pixie......having a Catholic background yourself, you can probably really identify with my experiences as a Catholic...*sigh*...(both good and bad...) and Queen......since I was also a protestant, you can probably identify with my experiences there too... Not to offend anyone, but I think they both use the "fear factor" to rope in people..
It seems so nice, to finally be free of the fear  and guilt, and know that I'm going to be okay after all...and that I'm not going to go to hell for committing a "mortal sin" or because I'm not "saved!" When I read GOOBERZ, I was just so taken with it....and Linda's ability to pour her heart and soul out...and it was my inspiration to try and emulate her style, with my own story.... Yes, Homestead is asking a ridiculous sum to keep my website with them...so tho it will take a lot of time, I'll just try and put a new one up, on my Geocities site.... Thanks again, for reading it.. Rainbow Although I had visited your site before (and enjoyed it!) I somehow missed this part. I just finished reading your "Gooberz"... gosh, it was wonderful! You are a very good writer, have you written anything else? You could probably write an excellent novel if you wanted to!! Also, what a life so far! You are an inspiration... BTW, I loved the visuals too... the burning "hell" was very funny  Anyway, peace to you, and please announce your new site when you upload it...

I was raised Roman Catholic, sort of. My father was a long distance truck driver and every weekend he was home we would go to church. Fortunatly he wasn't home much until I was just about high shcool age. So I got to do a lot more playing in the trees and exploring with my lil brother than church on weekends. I attended catholic school. Grade eight we started studying other religions and I thought I'd sooner be Buddhist than Catholic so I didn't want to be confirmed . . But y'know peer pressure . . I followed them off the bridge Then I went on to Catholic Highschool Eww. What a Mistake. Rich catholics can be the biggest snobs. As I knew, before I followed them to the high school. I realised this incidentally at age 14, the half saturn return. And I upped and moved schools. To the public board where I was much happier. My saturn is in the ninth, cnj. jupiter. I move to make things better . . about every 7 mo's *cringe* I finished high school, and then didn't go to university (despite acceptance) because I was dealing with a bunch of things, my grandfather had passed away and the next two years as I was about to find out were going to be hell on wheels. About a year ago I started needing an offline distraction because my net access was too shaky to continue my current ones (Neptune cnj. my asc I need the escape . .*G*). And Astrology it was.

Pearly..........Thank you so much for all the nice things you had to say about my own "mini Gooberz." I soooo appreciate the kind remarks.  However, I really don't consider myself a writer...(altho I will admit that at times I've thought it might be fun to try and write a book...*sigh*)....and I'll also confess that it did me alot of good to get all that stuff out..  But considering the amount of time that it took me to just put into that little venture, I'm pretty sure I'm not up to writing a book...And oh, wow! Actually, the zodiac signs are over the door of the main Mormon Temple in SLC.  I've never had one problem with the church or any of my bishops with me being an astrologer. In fact, members sometimes consult me for help. Did you realize the planets and stars are mentioned more in the Book of Mormon than the Bible? Most people have no idea of that fact. ------------------

A healthy debate is very different from a hostile one. Most religious debates become hostile ones. I don't bother giving my energy to the hostile ones. I think religion is a stupid thing to debate. We all have our differences and our different beliefs and that should be accepted by others, even if they don't agree with it. ------------------

Morning Storm I had no idea of the zodiac signs being on the front of the temple doors. I had always thought that astrology was forbidden in the church. If its true then I feel so much relief. I have having a bit of a crisis on my spirit with trying to understand why astrology was not accepted. Randall thankyou so much for picking up on it as well. I love the church ,but couldn't help feeling as though I was leaving something behind when I stopped learning about astrology. If you have anymore info on it I would be enormously grateful for it. Missy, I guess it's all in the way it's presented. I don't present it as a way to predict the future--the church strongly believes in free will, as do I. I present it as the tool it is to help us make decisions in our life. If I were embarrassed about it or tried to hide it, they would think I was doing something wrong. If you walk into my home, it is obvious that I am an astrologer and practice astrology. I have never felt the need to hide it, because I don't see anything wrong with it. The one person who has debated me on the issue lost big time. Being raised a preacher's kid comes in handy when debating religion, because I know the Bible better than most. Now, when I add what I have learned from the other scriptures the church has given me, I presented a solid case that made him think. Now, that person consults me about his chart. I took debate in high school and college, so I'm not an easy person to argue with or debate.  ------------------

Out of curiousity, I did an internet search for astrology and church. Under the Catholic.com site, it is not favorable for Catholics to be involved at all.
There was one site, that actually had quotes from the bible talking about astrology, not in a negative way.IP: Logged |
