what's the difference between mother of pearl, and genuine mother of pearl?

Artificial mother-of-pearl is a more flexible and is usually more soft than the real deal. Since its so soft, manufacturers use it quite often the real mother of perl since its quite easy to work with.

However, since its artificial it obviously has a lower value rating over the real one.

The real mother of pearl is quite hard and is usually hand stiched into clothings, furniture, etc.

and i have another question, what if its just 'mother of pearl' and its not specified as artifical or genuine, does that mean its real? or inbetween?
