Today was a fun day.
Ever spend 7 hours driving in a blizzard? In mountains?

I had to get my car out of the park today. We have been in a "wait and see" mode daily, wondering if today will be the day the Park Service tells us to get out.

So...
even the parking lot is bad. The roads haven't been plowed in 2 weeks, and we have been getting heavy snow since Saturday. I get about 1 mile from home and stop for my one and only freak out of the drive.

The snow is about 2 and a half, maybe 3 feet thick on the road. My car just barely can get through, using ruts left by other vehicles (who, I don't know- who else is mad enough to sneak in...)

Did I mention I don't have snow tires, or chains... I don't even have sand bags or kitty litter "just in case."
I am not fulfilling my obligations as a Wisconsin native. I know better.

But what are my choices? I can't leave my car in the park, and I have to work the next day. So I keep going.

Through the blizzard, and the white out, and the chance that a herd of bison might be around the next corner forcing me off the road (and off a cliff.)

I made it- 1 hour to go 30 miles. Only 200 more to go.

I drove through snow, ice, sleet, 5 minutes of sun, 2 downpours, a windstorm that closed down the interstate for the past day, a couple of overturned semis, more rain, back to snow.

And I made it.
No chains, no snow tires....

and NO CIGARETTES.

that's the most amazing thing!!

I have many worst case scenario stories.
First off MK what do you drive? Manual? Automatic?
Next
    Front wheel drive?
You are savy to that I am sure. Unless the snow on the road covers my wheel wells, I will bet large money on common sense, not to mention driving skill, over any 4-Drive SUV.
    My worst drive?
more to tell but, bottom line? An 18 hour straight. On a road that was moguls. I had "the fever" as in road fever, for 3 days after. Bum pity bump.
    My Mom is from Wyoming..
.yeah that helps

You win!

We've only got about a foot out there so far. But WTF is up with the freezing rain?? On top of shovelling (sp?), then using a shop broom to brush the snow off the car, we then have to hack at the windshield and all doors just to get in the bloody vehicles and THEN we can start them up and get the heat going. I know what I want for X-Mas. REMOTE CAR STARTER, ANYONE?? LOL

Hi Art! OK: another one is through the Appellations-- Virgina side.
Dense fog this time. So thick; the driver could not see 1,000 feet. An 18 wheeler pulled me through. For about 400 miles. It felt like to California.
When I went through Blacksburg VA.....through tight S turns-- off of an escarpment, a deer dropped down into the road in front of me.
Had it occurred before that.. or me already logging in 10 hours on the road. That switch back could have been me, or the deer.

The cliff was high enough that it appeared as if he slid down from nowhere. I have Mars in Gemini. And Mercury as a chart ruler. I attribute my not going off the road to a good eye, hand ~ coordination. And maybe luck?
