Topic: Do coffee grounds actually work against slugs?

I'm wondering if anyone has had experience trying this. Where we live, they're all over the place (and eating my flowers). I don't really want to kill them (and I'm definitely not interested in setting up the beer trap thing or anything like that, which involves collecting dead slugs--no thanks).I also don't want to spend the money buying plants that they like to eat more than my Violas. And putting down a copper border sounds complicated. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

Ha...that's what I was thinking. It's not like it's going to cost anything extra for me to try it out, or harm the environment. Might as well give it a shot! I'll keep you guys posted after I've tried it for a while, for anyone who has an overabundance of the little turkeys. They really ate up our lettuce last year, until we moved it to a different location in the garden. I'm not sure whether they just weren't as prominent in that particular area of the garden, or if perhaps there were other plants close by that deterred them. Hmmm... IP: Logged |

Hmm. I went outside to try my experiment, and lo and behold, there was a slug making its way over to my Violas. So I poured the coffee grounds around the plant, and he didn't seem very happy about that (I accidentally got some on him).A few minutes later, I went to look for him, and found him not far. So I sprinkled some raw coffee grounds in his path. He actually switched directions, which is what I read they would do. Fingers crossed that this will work long-term... IP: Logged |

I'll be watching this thread for updates! I've heard about the giant slugs in the Pacific Northwest and I want to be prepared.Like you, I'd rather not torture them. I'll just want them to stay away, if possible. IP: Logged |

Ha ha. Yes, they're basically everywhere. But yeah, I don't want to hand pick them or torture them, so...yeah. I'll keep at it and let you guys know how it goes. I've also read that Sluggo (which is what one of my friends uses) is actually harmful to animals and other friendly creatures. I read that the company doesn't list the ingredients honestly, via some sort of loophole. But I don't believe everything I read on the internet (hopefully that goes without saying), and I've only seen one article that said that. So I'm going to read up on it a bit more. Of course I would rather not kill them, but if the coffee grounds don't work I might be forced to take drastic measures. Or just buy some different flowers to feed the slugs so that they'll stay away from the ones I like. Such a bunch of freeloaders! IP: Logged |

Nah, it just requires thought and ingenuity if you want to avoid being a complete turd to the environment, haha. Yes, Ami...slugs are basically snails without the shell. Slimy and exasperating, as they slither around in the grass and can accidentally get stepped on, as they're hard to notice. That is quite a revolting experience, I can tell you. I accidentally sat on one in the woods, years ago. I went to sit on a log, and...yeah. Nice, eh? The hazards we never consider, when walking through the woods. IP: Logged |

Sorry, didn't mean to gross everyone out... Slugs are kind of disgusting, honestly. That's another reason I like to keep the ground beetles around, and not be too liberal with the DE. Ground beetles are great predators for slugs and other unpleasant guests. IP: Logged |

Eh...I still need to keep checking. I've been preoccupied with my strawberries, heh. Also, they did so much damage to the existing flowers that it might be hard to tell for a while. My poor Violas and Pansies! IP: Logged |

I've had problems with slugs, too. Not so far this year, but over the past few. I've read about eggshells, crushed, keeping them away. I'll have to try the coffee grounds. You could also check out yougrowgirl.com - I have one of her books, and intend to make a couple of sprays. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info, Teasel!Yeah, I can't even tell whether or not the coffee grounds are working, the slugs did so much damage to my flowers before I had a chance to try it... But I don't think that I'm seeing any new slime trails (ew) over them, so I'm hoping that it's working. I need to get out there and put some more grounds down. Best of luck to you with your garden! they've just about eaten my heirloom watermelon seedlings. I put them into the ground this afternoon, and am going to make up a spray (hopefully). IP: Logged |

Ew, hahah.Unfortunately, the slugs sort of had to be...uh. "Taken care of", if you get my drift. Naturally, but...yeah. As long as they're not anywhere near my garden, it's live and let live. However, I planted that stuff so that we could eat it, not so that the prolific slug population here could eat all of our strawberries, squash flowers, and lettuce! I still feel pretty badly, but they were a little out of control this year...
