Topic: Anyone have some good tips for growing Strawberries?

My Strawberries are all leaves and pips. This is the second year. No blooms or berries last year. What can I do to get some berries. The leaves and pips are very healthy. Thanks!!!!!!!!!IP: Logged |

Here's what DIY says:Easily grown all over America, strawberries are a great fruit for new gardeners. Of course, you need the right kind of growing environment--a strawberry patch requires tons of direct sunlight and well-drained soil. Although the plant adapts well to various ground conditions, you'll get the best results with soil that's fairly rich. Here's a key tip: do not start a strawberry patch in a spot where tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant, strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries have grown in the last three years. They all risk passing on fungi and pests that will deep-six your strawberries. My Mom and her boyfriend have been successfully growing strawberries in Stafford for a few years now almost completely in the shade - they've just terraced the area (for drainage), fertilize it well, and water it like mad (he has a sprinkler system running through half the yard...b/c when an Aquarius gets into something, they really get into it). What kinda of Stafford soil to you have?
The Virginia Red Clay or the Rocks?
Either way, it's probably best to try to get something else in there (I mean, better soil at least mixed in). IP: Logged |

Strawberries like:like sandy soil, southwestern exposure, mild winter climate.Factors Affecting Growth:
Long days and warm temperatures favor the growth of leaves and runners, while short days and cool temperatures are necessary for flower formation in the short day varieties. Strawberries will have more flavor when grown in areas where days are sunny and nights are cool. Strawberries that grow during cool temperatures have firmer fruit than those grown during warm humid weather. Temperatures of 70 to 80 F during the day and 60 to 65 during the night result in a ripening period of about 30 days. silvermoon

My grandma always poured 7up across her plants soil somehow it encouraged health must have been the carbonation [carbon dioxide gas]she did this faithfully just once per month or so and this lady had a GREEN thumb!
