Hello PPl..
My DOB is 20:44, 7th April, 1978. Place of Birth: Bangalore, India.

astro.com gave a detailed analysis on my natal data based on the above information. However, this did not tally with my natal chart based on vedic astrology.

The basic differences lay as follows:
My Ascendant as per astro.com is Scorpio while it is Libra as per vedic astrology. Also, as per astro.com, I have Moon in Aries, while vedic astrology places my Moon in Pisces. Can anyone explain the discrepancy? How can a planet or a sign be in two different places at the same time??

Ravish, the differences to the two systems is that the vedic Astrology is in reference to the ancient Sidereal Zodiac and not the popular Western Tropical system. Personally, I would stay with the Vedic method. Although I have never studied vedic Astrology, what delineations that have been read in Indian astrology, leave somewhat to be desired, if you can find Tropical delineations based on observation and not on traditions, then whatever delineations are given for a particular Luminary, go to the sign preceding it, and then you will find a more accurate reading.

You really are happy to see me around, aren't you Randall - welcoming me on the site the second time over! :-)

Boron,
Firstly, Thanx for the response! However, would you please rephrase the answer for me -as I am a novice, I kind of got lost in your reply - probably if you could extend this with an example, it would be great!

OK Ravish I will try. I am assuming that you are not familiar with astronomical terms. So, I will answer according to a little history -as I understad it.

The difference between the two zodiacs is the position of the signs in respect to the actual constellations bearing the same names. About 221 AD, there was an astronomer/astrologer name Ptolemy. He noted in some of his writings that the Vernal Equinox was also the beginning of the sign Aries. This was true in 221 AD, but the spring-time Vernal Equinox ( the place in the heavens where the Sun appears to cross the projecton of the Earth's equator) keeps creeping westward, a few seconds of arc per year. This is due to the earth's 26,000-year wobble. Today, some 1900 years later, the same reference is still used, especially in Astronomical planetary placement guides, called Epemerides. Most Astrologers have little knowledge about astronomy, therefore most of them accept the idea that the vernal equinox is still 0 degrees of the sign Aries. However after such a long time of this incremental changing, it is actually now at 5 degrees of Pisces- some 25 degrees (or days) ahead of the actual sign Aries. Yet,the popular idea of the "age of Aquarius" acknowledges the vernal equinox approaching the last degrees of Aquarius. Will they still figure this as being 0 degrees Aries? As I began, the main difference between the two systems is where the beginning of each sign actually is. The Tropical system says that the vernal equinox is the beginning of the sign Aries, where the Sidereal uses as it primary marking point (fiducial) the Solar Apex(the point in the galaxy where the entire Solar system appears to be heading, which is between the constellations and Sidereal Astrological signs of Sagittarius and Capricornus) This point of reference, allows certain bright stars with in the several zodiacal constellations to mark degrees within those signs.

I hope this clears up the difference between the two systems. Best wishes, Ravish,

.........boron
