"The Spiral Dance" by Starhawk I heard is THE #1 Witchcraft 101 type text...

Anyone read it? Like it? Hate it?

Any other good texts for Beginner Study?
Intermediate Study?
Advanced Study?

I know nothing, anything you can share would be a great service to me and all others interested...

Hey Lost Leo,

I haven't read this one, but I highly recommend The Power of the Witch by Laurie Cabot. It's the first book on witchcraft I've read and it's still the one by which I measure all others (but I haven't read that many, though). It's great for a beginner. I'm sure other people on this forum have many other great suggestions.

oh gosh... it's good to read a lot of beginner books. There will be some conflicting information in them and you have to sort of sort through it.

If you're reading books on Wicca please keep in mind that it's trendy to exagerrate history in a lot of the new books.

I haven't read The Spiral Dance in a long time but I remember good things from it and I know it comes highly recommended.

I like Patricia Telesco quite a bit and she has a lot of books to choose from.

I haven't read The Spiral Dance, but I have heard positive things about it. I strongly urge you to read "Wicca: The Old Religion in the New Milennium," by Vivianne Crowley.

Lost Leo, there is a tendency among a few particular neo-Pagans to utterly ignore and villify new seekers because they don't know if they're "serious". My suggestion is to ignore them. They don't realize that Love entails appreciation for all life forms, not only the ones who are members of their Coven. They do not represent the vast majority of neo-Pagans. I hope you never meet one of these, but if you ever do, remember the ones who Love, such as Wych of Avalon and PaganAnnie. They are the true representation of neo-Paganism.

Alright, you've got me cornered, I'll put one up soon...

Spiritua, thanx for the warning I appreciate your foresight and consideration and will keep it in mind as I study.

Hi Lost Leo,
I'm a big fan of Starhawk, the Spiral Dance is a great book, an easy and inspiring read.
I also have to recommend a couple other things by her.
The Twelve Swans is her latest book on the craft and the nice thing about it is it's specifically designed with portions for beginners, intermediate and advanced in each chapter.
Also, Truth or Dare by Starhawk is a great eye opener as to how power evolved in human society and it also offers rituals and excercises that are invaluable to sensitive persons trying to maintain a healthy mindset in a damaging society.

Scott Cunningham is also a great resource for beginners. A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner is a classic. I really enjoy his Encyclopedia for Magical Herbs..

Glad to see another seeker of the mysteries!
Bright Blessings of Peace and Love on your search!

LL,
I personally have never read The Spiral Dance, but it seems to be loved by many. As soon as I get done with Gooberz it is next on my list.

I must say that I ditto what Harpyr said about Scott Cunningham. It was passed down to me in the beginning of my study. At some point you should check it out.

Good luck and Bright Blessings on your journey!

Yes, I have both, the Encyclopedia for Magical Herbs and The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner.

The Encyclopedia is great, but I haven't yet had the time to read the other one. Maybe I will now

Sister, enjoy Gooberz! It's pure magic.

Oh then you really got tons left, I envy you. It gets better and better (and sadder and more beautiful) all the time, and the ending is just, well how can I put it... Pure magic. I remember when I was reading it I was stalling more and more because I didn't want it to end yet.
