Interesting point... BUT:

The Earth is always 180 degrees from the Sun.

So, if you are a 10 degree Aries Sun Sign, you have Earth in 10 degrees of Libra. If you are a 22 degree Aquarius by Sun Sign, you have the Earth in 22 degrees of Leo.

This must be the case, as we can always pinpoint the location of the Sun against the ecliptic... so we must be in the opposite point in order to make the observation.

Make sense?

A planet named vulcan has been discovered (as have many other hundreds of planets orbiting other stars) it is roughly 3 parsecs away from us (ie pretty bloody far) orbitting the star epsilon eridani. do you mean the theory about the tenth planet or companion star -Nemesis- that has been hypothesised about or does astrology have, once again, absolutely nothing to do with real science?

i actually have learned a lot more about astrology but not to the level that most of the people on this forum are at as that would take too long and im not that interested in the inner workings of it.

The planet Earth
The planet Earth is the Soul-centred ruler of the sign Sagittarius. We can find the Earth's position on a chart if we count 180 degrees from the natal position of the Sun.

Planet Earth in Astrology
It's amazing how little attention or understanding our own planet Earth gets in the scheme of astrology today. Earth is a planet after all -isn't it?. And all real planets have astrological influences -don't they? Of course they do. So if Earth is a bonafide planet, and it has indeed an astrological influence, where or what in the hell is this influence in the horoscope?

It must be a HUGE influence since we live on the darned thing! Yet nobody seems to connect the dots, or if they do, you don't hear them shouting it out from the rooftops.

Yes, I've heard the old line about Earth being in the sign opposite your Sun since astronomically it is always 180 degrees away from it. This is pure astronomical rubbish since astrology is a geocentric(earth-centered) science or discipline rather than a heliocentric(sun-centered) one. We're living on the Earth darn it -not the Sun! Real astrology is concerned about how everything appears from where you're standing, and you certainly aren't standing on the Sun!

So how do you a measure the influence of a planet you're standing on. Easy. It's called the eastern horizon(it may have been western in other ages). The eastern horizon is where the Earth's circumference etches its way along the ecliptic from an individual's standpoint(see "the eastern horizon in astrology article" in this site). Of course, we see this as the sky moving westward rather than the Earth rotating eastward. Roughly every two hours, a thirty-degree section of the sky "rises" westward along the ecliptic(planetary path) over the horizon. The exact apparent meeting point between Earth's eastern horizon and the ecliptic marks the Ascending degree and/or sign -from the perspective of the individual's exact time and place of birth. It marks your unique astrological signature on this planet.

In short, the rising sign or ascendant , is the influene of none other than our very own planet! Planet Earth affects us astrologically via the ascendant or rising sign - which is why this part of our horoscope is such a big deal in the first place, yet most astrologers consistently fail to make this connection(between the Earth and the ascendant) clear. Astrologers refer to the rising sign or ascendant as an "angle", a "filter", or a "mask" that we wear, dominating the way we look or act in public. The ascendant is all of these things and more! It is your Earth, Terra, or Gaia sign! Our planet desperately needs a real name! Earth is not a good name as it often associates it with the element of the same name.

Why are astrologers hiding the true meaning of the Ascendant or Rising sign in astrology? What do they have to lose from it? Is the clergy(total believers in astrology) behind their restraint? The knowledge of how Earth is the central or primary influence in the horoscope would certainly revolutionize astrology and make it credible to both science and religion. It may even unite them, as they are both the wayward offsprings of astrology. There are too many schisms in this world and a strong need for a more integrated approach.

Our planet(and all other planets or heavenly bodies) are collective entities(gods if you will), with a definite influence on all of its inhabitants. This influence is not only physical but spiritual or astrological as well. Our bodies come from the earth/Earth which is of the same substance as the other planets and our spirits come from the planet's own spirit or oversoul which envelops it. This spirit or ascendant force has the greatest effect in the shaping of our bodies(and minds). The spirits of the other planets also shape us on all levels. If we birthed on the Sun, then the Sun would become our rising or ascendant influence and the Earth planet would become a regular planetary influence such as we now consider Mars or Jupiter. If we birthed on Mars then Mars would energize our rising sign -and so on.

Our Earth or Ascendant sign is our worldly self, the part of us we are shaping or integrating into ourselves as we breathe or speak. It is our current lesson or school and there are twelve ascendants to master or experience before we can leave this planet permanently. Ideally, if Pisces is your current rising sign, Aquarius was your last, and Aries wll be your next. Your rising sign is a way of keeping tabs on your many different lives here. The keywords for planet Earth are diversity and relationships which can give important clues about its ruling sign.

It's a real shame that astrology as a whole has not yet made the connection between Earth's astrological influence and the ascendant or rising sign. Or if they have, they're not telling. This is sad, because it's really keeping astrology from flourishing into the great science/art that it is. What we need in astrology is less parroting and more courage and original thought. Most people already know the truth and are simply waiting for the "authorities" to state it.

In summary, our Earth is a planet too -with a astrological influence, but because we live on it, its influence comes to us in a special way -via the ascendant or rising sign.

Earth through the Signs

One of the most important facets and goals of human evolution at this time is the creation of the conscious link, the collective Rainbow Bridge, which is joining humanity (the Fourth Kingdom) to the Fifth Kingdom of Souls – the Planetary Hierarchy, and the unfolding Christ Consciousness. This exalted loving place is very much related to Venus, the Fifth Ray, Aquarius, Jupiter and to the Third Eye, in the centers in the human organism.

The goal of life on Earth is to become an Initiate, and unfold that aspect of the Christ Consciousness which dwells within each of us. The form of that expression differs from person to person, relative to the nature of individual dharma and karma, but the ~essential~ Love/Wisdom of that unfolding consciousness is the same for us all. This is our unifying link. Sagittarius and Capricorn, sign of the Initiate, are linked through the Third Ray association of the Earth and Saturn, and provide us with yet another insight into the importance of the experience gained through life on this planet. The two signs also point to the relationship of the Path to the Goal.

In all the combinations of Earth in the signs which follow the reader is advised to include the influences of Saturn and Sagittarius, for wherever the Earth is placed, so too is the karma of the Path and vision of the Goal.

Earth in Aries

This position points to a life that serves to release or birth Active Intelligence into the environment. This is done through awakening oneself, and then others, to the latent possibilities for the creative expression of the Earth’s resources, and of matter in general. This is balanced by the Sun in Libra, indicating that such resources have to be distributed (through Uranus and the 7th Ray) according to the Law of Right Human Relations. This combination blends the energies of Rays One and Seven {Aries} with Ray 3 (the Earth) and is thus very much related to the relationship of Spirit and matter through the focus of Active Intelligence.

Earth in Taurus

A most potent position for the dispelling of material glamours and illusions. This placement reveals that one of the most essential tasks the individual has to accomplish is the creation of those forms which will be the proper instrument for the expression of the Will-to-Be. The Third and Fourth Ray combined in this position, providing a potent and challenging life. This soul-centred person would be constantly involved in the process of breaking down those forms and structures which are no longer able to transmit Light. The keyword for this position could be ~I break down and unblock~, as this function characterises one who is born with the Earth in Taurus and the Sun in Scorpio. It should be remembered that Venus, exoteric ruler of the Bull, is considered the Higher Self of the Earth. The Earth in Taurus helps to reveal the inner truth of the spiritual reality hidden all too often within the context of terrestrial life and material forms.

Earth in Gemini

This is a very challenging position as its esoteric significance is more profound. Since the Earth rules Sagittarius, it would be natural to assume that this planet has its detriment in the sign of the Twins. Yet Venus rules Gemini and the connection between the Earth and Venus is a highly positive and beautiful one. One can only speculate and so consider the following conclusions in this light. It is a fact that Gemini, through its association with Venus creates in the minds of humanity an increased awareness of the essential duality which exists between material, sensual desires and the urge to align oneself with the Will-to-Good of the spirit. In effect the basic duality of one on the Fixed Cross is this conflict between the will of the lesser self and the Will of the Creator. This is a collective planetary, and particularly human dilemma. It appears that this duality is increased when the Earth is in Gemini and the Sun is in Sagittarius, thus giving a heightened spiritual opportunity to one with this placement.

On the personality level, this may indicate that the energies of the lower self tend to scatter and become dissipated in the unconscious attempt to integrate egocentric motivations. A Soul-centred individual with this placement in the natal horoscope would tend to be quite aware of the disparity existing between the values and goals of the personality and those of the Higher Self. The house position of the Earth would reveal that area of life in which this duality is most pronounced. In the symbology of the Twins the Ancient Wisdom Teachings tell us that the Earth is related to the Brother ~whose light grows stronger cycle by cycle~. This, of course, refers to the increasing expression of Soul-focused love.

Earth in Cancer

Cancer is the ~Gate In~ and anchors the incarnating soul onto the Planet in terms of the personality and the mass consciousness. It is a beginning of the evolutionary arc which first seeks to develop self consciousness in Leo, and then group consciousness (and subsequent world service) in Aquarius. From the Soul centred perspective of one who is born with this position and thus with the Sun in Capricorn, the emphasis on the Third Ray is paramount. Cancer is the primary sign of the expression of this Ray and Capricorn is found here as well. Saturn the ruler of the latter, on both Soul and personality levels, is the primary planetary expression of Active Intelligence and is partnered in this respect by the Earth. This is the purest Third Ray expression possible (although Earth in Capricorn also has a potential Third Ray expression). The dharma of the life is clear; to create those physical structures and thought forms that allow Light to be utilised as a source of strength for others. The house position will reveal this ~well of spiritual waters sunk deeply into the Earth~ so that all may come to drink of the Father (in this case the Father of the Waters, Neptune).

Earth in Leo

The mental quality of this combination is very strong, as we have a blending in Rays One and Five (Leo) and Three (Earth). Yet the Sun is of the Second Ray, so the potential for creating those forms of expression of Love/Wisdom is very great. The Sun in Aquarius brings in the polarised energies of yet another Fifth Ray sign, and its Second Ray ruler, Jupiter. The Aquarian will be able to find an Earth based focus (that is, the Earth’s house position) for the urge to network and unite groups of various individuals. The self conscious quality of the Earth’s Leo placement will point to exactly where the Water Bearer has to distribute his ~burden~ of consciousness.

Earth in Virgo

This is the position wherein the ~Mother of All Forms~ can do an incredible amount of good to release the potency of the hidden Christ child in the Soul. This combination points to an incarnation in which the individual works hard at healing and making the life on Earth more whole. Spiritually, it is a very strong position given the fact that the Sun is in Pisces, and the energies of Pluto are also manifesting. The Earth-based focus gives Pluto a chance to ~unearth the Underworld~ evoking from the depths of materiality the essential quality of love which lies in dark obscurity for the majority of humanity.

Earth in Libra

There are three sets of connections which should be mentioned in regard to this position; it is highly mental in nature, as it is composed of Rays Three (Earth and Libra), Five (Venus) and Seven (Libra and Uranus). It involves the impulsing of the Sun in Aries and its focus in the ~Place where the Will of God is Known~ with the linkage of the Higher and lower minds (Third and Fifth Rays, and Venus). This position also indicates the externalisation of the Divine Ideas for the unfoldment of the Plan of Creation into the ~minds of men~. This is accomplished through the relationship of Rays One-Three-Five and their synthesised expression through Uranus and Ray Seven. The Mind of the Soul-centred person with the Earth in Libra and the Sun in Aries will act as a tool for the birthing on Earth of those essential Ideas ~whose time has come~.

Earth in Scorpio

This position continues to reveal the incredible opportunity for individuals on the Scorpio-Taurus polarity in their quest for the Path. It also reveals the particular type of service one may render while discovering and co-creating the Way. The Earth and Mars enter into an intimate relationship through this combination breaking down all resistance to the reorientation of material values and the release of Spiritual Will. The house position of the Earth in Scorpio is a clear indication of where a tremendous focus of detachment and sacrifice has to be made in order that a greater realisation of wholeness and healing can be created. Earth in Sagittarius

Esoteric Ruler

The potential of the Second Ray is at its highest in this combination. The Path on the Earth will be conditioned in the daily life by Jupiter, the exoteric planetary ruler of the sign. Its polarity is the Sun in Gemini, both influenced exclusively by Love/wisdom. Through the tremendous duality of Gemini-Sagittarius, the Soul centred individual firmly comes to know the Path he is to take on the Earth. The dharma of the life is to anchor oneself on the Path, and through such efforts, to communicate and share with others the focus of this struggle. It is interesting to note that the astrological centre of the universe is located in the sign of the Archer. When the Earth also finds itself in this sign it would appear that a special link is formed. When the Soul-centred individual anchors his feet firmly on the Path of Earth in Sagittarius he opens the Way for many others to follow.

Earth in Capricorn

As we know Capricorn is the ~Gate Out~ of ordinary incarnations, and onto the wheel of initiation and the birthing of the Christ consciousness hidden in the womb of the Virgin. The position the Earth occupies in the natal chart when the Sun is in Cancer reveals the place and function by which the Soul centred individual can most positive release his or her portion of the One Life into manifestation. Both the dharma and the karma of the life conjoin through Saturn’s association with Capricorn, the Earth and the Third Ray. Should Saturn also be found in Capricorn, conjunct the Earth and in actual opposition to the Sun in Cancer, this incarnation points to a great culmination of previous efforts in former lifetimes and a great challenge is revealed in the current one. The challenge involves the proper structuring of the life forces so that they are put under the total Will of the Father. There is no room for duality in this position, and the light of the one-pointed disciple must shine through the illusions of the material life. No-one said it would be easy!

Earth in Aquarius

The developed sense of self consciousness found in the life of the Soul-centred Leo individual finds ample opportunity for world service when the Earth is in the sign of the Water Bearer. This combination shows an emphasis on the mental plane, as this is a Third Ray planet acting through a Fifth Ray sign. The effects of Saturn as co-ruler of Aquarius on the personality level, as well as its Third Ray connection to the Earth are also significant. This position points to the need to create those structures of mind which channel and distribute innovative concepts into the collective consciousness. The work to be undertaken in this capacity involves the loving use (Jupiter) of the Concrete Mind for the advancement of those Ideas and Principles that will bring a sense of unified wholeness to human experience.

Earth in Pisces

A most potent placement, as there is a strong blending of the three Rays of Aspect through Pluto (First) Earth (Third) and Pisces (Second). The synthesis occurs through the Sixth Ray quality of the Fish and the devotion of the Soul centred individual to humanity, the Christ consciousness, and the Plan. The dharma involves selfless work to release people from those facets of the astral/desire nature which inhibit the flow of the Universal loving matrix (Second Ray). For the individual with the Sun in Virgo, the outer field of service will be indicated by the house position of this Earth in the natal chart. Jupiter and Neptune, the exoteric rulers of this sign, add even more loving idealism to this effort, but the fundamental nature of the Earth itself serves to balance such aspirations within the context of practicality.

Sure You Know Your Sun Sign...
But do you know your Earth Sign?

Legacy - Upon completion of self-realization and a self-contained sense of being free from the need of input from others, relatability becomes a primary dynamic in the individual’s life. Interaction begins to provide a mechanism of on-going support for the individual as the person teaches others to recognize that which is self-disguised within their beings. This discipline can be taught by the Aries Earth with incredible compassion for the crisis of self-identity. The individual retains the ability to interact in a non-involved manner, allowing truth and personal integrity to prevail above all else.

Taurus Earth (Scorpio Sun)

Lesson - Many presume that the Earth rules Taurus. Perhaps one would then assume that the Earth in home territory would maintain a certain comfort or reliability in this Sign/Planet relationship. Perhaps that is true and only at the legacy level. These souls drop themselves into a body and begin an immediate struggle to learn absolute (Divine) worth without extorting, exploiting or destroying the value of the high worth item. The physical preoccupies the primal Taurus Earth mind, blinding all objectivity of what truly is important. Priority systems must be established, the truth told and motivations revealed. This all tends to combine the positive aspects of the lessons to lead to the luxury of the legacy. However, it is critical that the learning process for this Earthly student include doing his or her own home work with no ruses.

Legacy - Once optimized, these Earthlings quickly recognize the worth and value of a person, place or thing. Gemini Earth (Sagittarius Sun)

Lesson - This sign axis must learn to deal with an intellectually intense duality that teaches that the more consideration and objectivity, the greater the focus. These people perceive this postulate to be in direct contradiction to the basic programming of the mind. The blinders must be removed and a willingness to view polar opposition must result. A mental overload exists until the individual recognizes that missed objectives result from the inability to adjust or correct a course once in motion. Long range effects appear in little steps. As a Chinese proverb states, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” Such is the case for the Gemini Earth. Steps along the way allow for reconsideration, revision and resolutions to be refined without interruption to the natural direction.

Legacy - Once in a mode of receptivity and diversification, the Gemini Earth individual becomes one of the most directed and consistent contemplators on the planet. The lesson taught by these people is that there is no absolute way to get there. Many paths exist between here and there. Cancer Earth (Capricorn Sun)

Lesson - Mother Earth herself reaches the closest point of approach (perihelion) to the Sun in Cancer. The Cancer Earth contains the need to respond to the most direct sunlight and illumination of all the Earth placements. Direct and undisputed contact with the nurturing action is maintained and requires useful, non-interfering incorporation. Domination tendencies must convert into a support mechanism. Those with this Earth must learn about responsibilities and that each person owns a different sense of responsibility. This realization precludes being disappointed in one’s offspring (anyone to whom the Cancer Earth becomes attached) and releases guilt, expectation and irritation. Leo Earth (Aquarius Sun)

Lesson - The development of the personality in an ego sense is the first portion of this soul’s lesson. The ego must then evolve into a unique sense of self-contained individuality which functions with out the need to compare the self to others. Confidence is the quality which stimulates the beginning of the work leading directly into the legacy. The lesson, though, is a tough one and contains intense periods of variation in self-esteem. Sagittarius Earth (Gemini Sun)

Lesson - These Earthlings must learn that focus does not rule out necessary pursuits. They sense that there is a lack of freedom of choice when, in fact, a simple level of mental discrimination strives to present choices. Short range planning must be relinquished to the long range projection. Distraction must yield to well disciplined, conscious direction. Simplification must be produced to gain distance, direction and result. Yet, the need to remain responsive to the subtleness of Divine Signaling is necessary so that single mindedness and dogma does not result.

Legacy - The Sagittarius Earth spirit strives to leave behind a sense of direction stemming from their abilities to focus. A directed philosophy results from knowing which needs to pursue and which not. Vicarious learning must be encouraged to prevent redundancy of the human consciousness effort. The value of thoughts and knowing is taught to others.

Capricorn Earth (Cancer Sun)

Lesson - The Capricorn Earth strives to generate an autonomous sense of self which can only be derived from a strong sense of support and foundation. This support initially extends from external sources and the individual resists receiving support (based upon a point of view that he or she renders support only). This unilateral perception must be terminated for the person to evolve to the fullest. Under standing the bidirectional nature of support assists these people in growth. The awareness of assumable responsibility, to take and not to take, must be assimilated.

Legacy - With the Cancer side understood and synthesized, the Capricorn Earth provides others with a quiet, parental type of support which encourages assuming total responsibility for the self; no more and no less. Aquarius Earth (Leo Sun)

Lesson - Within the natural Leo association to the Sun this axis assumes a stronger natural emphasis. The goal of the actualized ego bears the fulfillment of humanity, a lesson easier stated than learned. Overcoming the guru syndrome requires great attention and per severance to cause. One must be conscious not to accept unwarranted praise and at the same time remain accepting of praise which is valid. Avoidance of idle flattery and yes-type followers must be included in the growth. Total identity as a unique and persistent individual cultivates some necessary isolationism for the growth process. Courage and commitment of the self requires more effort here than in any other case. One must obtain a strong sense of self that is referenced only to the self. This self referencing frees the ego from superiority/inferiority dynamics.

Legacy - Once actualized, these individuals strive to teach everyone to be who they happen to be and to become that which they strive to be. Lesson - To flow in the dimension of experience creates the major lessons of evolvement for these Earthlings. When the Pisces Earth encounters a dynamic of growth, the tendency is to compartmentalize the awareness in an intellectual or academic manner. This is fine as far as the process is understood. The only drawback to this system comes from the integration of the experience. To understand experientially creates a conflict for this sign. Once an experience is assimilated, the tendency becomes to translate the experience in a logical or mnemonic manner. On many levels of experience this is impossible, as no words can formulate a concise enough picture to represent the occurrence. Thus, the individual falls in the position of knowing and not being able to explain. The creative process builds up momentum from such a response, allowing the individual to be manipulated by perplexity into realizing an unrecognized aspect of internal ingenuity.
