Hi N_w You don't live too far away from me so I got a question for you. Why can't I see any moon in the sky here in London I'm checking each night before I got to bed as I want to see Mars....but there's no Moon about. What's that all about????? You posted a great picture a few days ago Is the Moon visable where you are every night? Sue IP: Logged |

I have as well as the Perseid Meteor Showers. Mars isn`t red tho as I thought. It`s yellowish orange but beautiful. I feel privilaged to have seen it. The showers were awesome . Rather looked like faery dust sprinkling the sky. Tomorrow night is supposed to be perfect viewing again for Mars & I`ll be watching. Oh you`ll be around for the next visit; perhaps you won`t re-member the first one tho . juniperb IP: Logged |

I saw Mars last night around midnight for the first time -- how magnificent and awe-inspiring! Like juniperb says he's not quite as red as usual, but a bit reddish indeed. He looks larger than I've ever seen Jupiter look, for comparison's sake. Cat, if you have to trek out of London to beat he cloud cover, please treat yourself and do it -- it's a mystical and amazing sight! It made me understand what it's like to see omens in the sky.Space.com has links from its home page on how/where to view Mars. If people are in areas with major light or air pollution, try contacting your local observatory re: trips or access to their facilities. cheers, Lunargirl IP: Logged |

i saw him last night too. it was beautiful. he was very yellowy orange, and you could not mistake him. he was actually the only light in the sky, i dont know what was up with that. but yea, there he was, shining bright. it was quite beautiful. the 27th will be the best time to see him as thats when he will be closest. so if you havent seen him, you have awhile yet. if you are in a city with a lot of smog, id do what lunar says, or just go for a little drive outside the city. i am in southwest british columbia (near vancouver) and he was a little bit southeast for me. dont know if that helps anyone, probably wont help you cat, as you are quite a distance from me. although perhaps if you looked west and maybe a little south, im sure you would see him. LL, youd probably do best to look a bit north. and wevil isnt in jail, lol... just needs a break. i thought i would have trouble seeing mars and i was freaking out about it a little, but honestly? you wont mistake him. i saw him rather by chance, i had other things on my mind and i wasnt thinking about looking for him, but he was unmistakable. i just looked right up and there he was. make a point to look on or about the 27! ------------------ where i end and you begin there's a gap in between there's a gap where we meet where i end and you begin and i'm sorry for us the dinosaurs roam the earth the sky turns green where i end and you begin i am up in the clouds i am up in the clouds and i can't and i can't come down IP: Logged |

Hi Everyne I'm glad that a lot of you have seen Mars. What's confusing me re the Moon and Mars is that it's not cloudy here in London - clear skies...I can see the stars but no Moon or Mars I'll look again tonight. Sue IP: Logged |

why does no one ask me these types of questions? i love to answer astronomy questions (since i know nowt about astrology).Cat, you seemed sad that you wont see mars again for years... no, this is just the closest its been for a long long time so its extra bright but you can see it every year, just like all the planets. Im just up from london and since london is a million times brighter than here i would guess the light pollution would suck there... but if you can see stars... i'm not sure. maybe you're looking in the wrong place or the planet has already set or its a new moon or something. you should go to www.skymaps.co.uk its great cos you can download free really useful star guides that show the planets and other cool stuff. any more astronomy questions? dont want to set myself up as a 'know-it-all' (cos i certainly dont) but this is all i can answer questions on so throw me a bone yeah? Hi Cat,Mars is very bright and as everyone said and a yellow/orange color. It seems to me to be the brightest and largest object in the sky to see with the naked eye. I am in a Chicago suburb and it is in the southern sky. If you have a pair of binoculars, check it out with those- it actually "looks" firey. Cindi

Hi Ash Wow I didn't know that you could see Mars every year......but I know more about astrology not astronomy..Yes I was a tiny bit sad as I'd read on astrology site that it wouldn't be this visible for another 87,000 years ...so I really wanted to see it. A friend of mine said today that the Moon is waning so I was wondering if it was low in the sky? Lots of tall buildings here in central London...so I thought..."is it hiding behind one of them It may be cloud but then I can't understand why I can see some stars......going to go to bed shortly so will check again Whereabouts do you live? Thanks for the web link - I'll check that out Any other astronomy questins I have...I now know who to ask Sue

Hi Cindi I love Chicago - used to go there for the trade shows in Jan/Feb....geeeeeez it's cold at that time of year. Unfortunately I don't have a pair of binoculars....so have to rely on my eyesight. It's a bit cloudy tonight so I guess it won't be visible.....but I'm still on Mars lookout Sue

Not only is our sky perfectly clear tonight for Mars viewing, but the Northern Lights will be putting their show on as well. Can`t wait for the double event. Cat I`m sorry you haven`t been able to view. Can you get out of the city for just one night? It would be well worth it. juniperb IP: Logged |
