Hi All,

Okay, this is really not going to sound all that friendly, but PLEASE STOP USING SHORTHAND when posting!!! It is driving my VIRGO ascendent NUTS!!!!! I am sure this has to affect any one with a tendency to want to edit, but it is also killing my Capricorn Mercury!

I mean, it's fine a few times in a post to save on time. Using things such as "bf" instead of boyfriend or such is also totally normal, but I can't take any post seriously that is so horribly written that I can barely read it.

I understand completely those from other countries where English is not the language. BUT come on, since when did we have to start typing "cud" instead of could? I am reading some of these posts thinking "What language is this?" its just lazy.

Sorry if I have offended anyone, I just don't feel that I can take those kinds of posts seriously when the person is not taking their grammer / spelling seriously at all.

hi, pidaua! tell me about it! english is not my native language either, so i try to understand everybody who spells wrong, again i do that too. but i have the same urge to just go and edit it and then send it back to the lazy spellers
don't know if it's your ascedant in virgo or the mercury. we share the same mercury, remember ?
anyway, thank god that somebody said something about that, i thought that nobody really cares about grammar anymore.

woah yeah..sometimes the slang does get out of hand. Fortunetly for me, Virgo isn't too strong in my chart so I don't find it terribly annoying..but it does seem silly to me. How much time is actually being saved by typing wood instead of would? It's one more letter.
But then..to play the devil's advocate here..perhaps some people are hen pecking at the keyboard. I remember what it was like before I learned to type. It was tedious.
Golly, I hope we don't scare anyone away.
Really, even the hen peckers are welcome!

LOL....Thanks Oxy...yeah I do have a hard time with my Spelling....it's a Saggie thing which totally frustrates my Virgo Ascendent. I wish I could say I meant to spell it wrong, but that would not be totally truthful!!! hee hee

Honestly, I don't have a problem with the occasional grammar problem or even when people are not using punctuation. LOL...it's the total abuse of the English language that makes it hard to understand.

I do see where it totally confuses people where English is a second language when they run into those posts where complete shorthand is being used.

Harpyr, I didn't even think about hen-pecking the keys. That is a good point.

I do know that I am somewhat picky and maybe it is Mercury moving into Sag that compelled me to jump out and say "Hey......please write so that I can understand you...I really want to post back to you but I do not read shorthand that well. LOL"

I know what you mean and I too am glad it was brought up. For me, it's my Gemini Sun and Mercury that wants to edit, lol. It's ironic, because this "shorthand" language may be quicker for the poster to type, but it takes me a lot longer to READ it than if it had been written out.

I have to admit, I am guilty of shortening signs (like "Aqua" for Aquarius, "Cappy" for Capricorn, "Scorp" for Scorpio, etc.). And although I find myself making loads of typos, I'm much more sensitive to spelling mistakes (I was that kid who always got 100% + the bonus points on all of her spelling tests ). I usually make typos because I'm trying to type quickly (Gemini Ascendent). Oh, and I often use "b/c" instead of "because." The only earth placements I have are Saturn in Virgo and Venus in Capricorn.

In all honesty, Pid, I agree -
I've sent e-mails that have been sent to me in that IM/text message shorthand back to people.

Hi Oxy,

I didn't mean shorthand in the context of abbreviations. Using Sag instead of Sagittarius or Gem instead of Gemini or Pid for Pidaua is just going with the abbreviated version, which is pretty standard and is widely accepted. ( I have been told on several occasions that I am a bit formal in my conversation writing..LOL).

Like Twin Lady said, it's when the shorthand changes the word itself that reading it becomes a chore. It takes me so much longer to get through that post because I do not register that "wot" is supposed to be "what" LOL

Thanks prox (see I abbreviated that LOL)

but oxy, does it bother you when they are trying to convey meaning with the mixing of cases? Like sELF or OpiNION? I really like to do that sometimes. It reminds me of some of the lessons the uniVERSE is trying to teach us.

Hey!!! Me too!!! I know I am very analytical, and in my own posts, if I reread them, and there are errors, I go nuts. There was one though, that I made a while ago, and I purposely left it, to remind me of my myriad faults. I agree with Harpyr, in that sometimes it is POIgNanT to use UPPER and lower case to reveal the true POINT of the word/thought. By the way- root word for analytical? Anal....as in retentive. Freud might have issues with that!

here goes nothing..

Pidaua, did you consider that your comment might turn people away from posting? I don't use shorthand, but if I was new here and posted a new topic using slang I would be embarassed after reading what was said here. I know you are trying to make it easier for people to read/respond to posts, however people that are intimidated to post in LindaLand to begin with (considering how many memebers we have, it seems only a handful actually post) might be even less likely to participate for fear of being ridiculed for their spelling. We are not all going to agree on what we like and what we don't, but that's how life goes. I would rather see the slang and spelling mistakes, then not have people post at all.

My two cents

Pidaua,

Here are a few typos you may want to edit in your first post:

Ascendant
Anyone
Mercury in Capricorn---zodiac sign adjectives to planets only go before Moon.
"What language is this?" its just lazy.---it's
I just don't feel that I can take those (these) kinds of posts seriously when the person is not taking their grammer (grammar)/ spelling seriously at all.

Totally and seriously are used too much throughout the entire post.

I hope this helps you out.

Ouch!!!

Yes, I do know that I make errors, but I do try to post in a manner that can be understood.

I appreciate you all putting me into my place, which is fine. It doesn't change my view on the complete corruption of the English language.

I did look at it from the view of someone that does not understand English as a first language and as someone that wants to post back to people, but I have a hard time reading the extreme abbreviations.

I have already stated here that I understand typos due to speed, no one is perfect. I also understand typos due to not knowing the language, emotions causing ones mind to go faster than their fingers can type, and basic poor skills.

There are others in agreement that it can be hard to keep up or read a post that is littered with abbreviated slang.

I do believe that I started this thread with the objection against SHORTHAND, not all forms of errors.

But, if it makes you feel better to slap me back into my place, then that's great. I will take note and still not do a damn thing about it or apologize for me being me!

whoa.
This thread is getting abit edgy for comfort. umm.. Yes, Aphrodite's comment was abit harsh, but then, Pidaua's initial posting of this in the first place was abit harsh too, if you ask me. I do have a tendancy to agree with hooked, in that posting here in LL can be intimidating for some people. It's hard enough when you post something and no one responds to it (I've been there, I know ) let alone someone picking apart the grammar of it.

buuuuut..Even though it may not have been worded most tactfully-Pidaua is a fellow Saggi afterall- I have to say I'm respectful of her pointing out something that annoys her and apparently others as well. I do have to say, as someone who's been on the recieving end of Pid's extreme annoyance, I think she tried to word the original post in a way that wasn't too insulting-even if she many not have succeeded in some people's eyes.

Yes, gloomy sag, we try to be kind and respectful to all around here but we are only human and differences of opinion do arise. Please don't let this turn you off from LL completely.
oh and if you really don't want to be dissillusioned anymore then definetly don't read some of the older threads in the Global Unity forum.
