My friend actually has an aspect which indicates he talks to himself. Anyone out there do this, or know someone?

Guilty.

Could be my kooky aqua moon, or my sun conj. mercury, or my moon oppose mercury.

I actually think I'm talking to whomever is within ear shot, but I'm not looking their way, and I'm mumbling. So they figure I'm talking to myself. People always go "WHO are you talking too!?"

"Nobody and everybody" is usually my reply.

The typical talking to yourself as a form of "thinking aloud" I don't know. My mom does that. Maybe Gemini Moon-Mercury conjunction, which she has. No censor of the lips. Heh heh.

But as we were discussing Asperger's Syndrome in another thread, one of its trait which I manifest a lot is "cognitive rehearsal" in which the person conducts entire conversations or verbal exchange as if with another person entirely in their mind or loud, as a way help literally "practice" for awkward social situations or to "do over" previous awkward social situations (Aspies, as we call ourselves, are often socially anxious and awkward). I'm not sure what aspect might be associated with cognitive rehearsing, since it is linked to neurological condition like AS that is rather complex, but it may be for me related to my Gemini Mercury squared Virgo ASC, Gemini Mercury squared pisces moon, Pisces moon conjunct DESC/oppo Virgo ASC, Moon squared MC, or all of the above.

I have been known to not only talk to myself and answer myself, but to interrupt myself as well. Shameful, i know...

I've known myself to ponder aloud.

I reply spontaneously to on-screen characters,
much as my father shouts at the red sox
('cept I don't shout).
I also like to parrot their lines, especially if I think I can do a better job.

Almost all the time man - ha. With me, maybe it comes from being an only child or something. I always discuss things openly with myself, I value my opinion I guess

yea, gemini nymph has something there...about there sometimes being a neurological basis for that kind of behavior.

i have tourette's syndrome myself, and i have a lot of vocal tic manifestations, including often repeating the same word over and over, compulsively.

it's interesting to note there might be some astrological connections, too. i have mercury exactly opposite my uranus, that's the only thing i can see that might be related to that...

I believe there was a time, years ago, when my son was gone for the weekend, I had no plans, and I was alone. It occured to me, after normalcy returned, that I didn't remember speaking all weekend.
So, nope, I guess I don't much talk to myself.
Sometimes I guess.....and always internally....

Interesting, GeminiNymph, what you say about recounting stress-filled conversations out-loud, or rehearsing an anticipated stressfull conversation... I recall my father doing that alot. I use to think he was nuts.

He'd be drying dishes or something, and of all a sudden he'd say "I simply said...'I want no part of it'", or something like that. Then, he'd repeat it, or go on a little more...not talking anybody in the room, nor did he seem to even realize he was doing it.

The only thing that stood out in his chart, that may be an indicator, is Mercury conjunct Uranus in Taurus, both trining Neptune in Virgo.

Don't know what house anything lands in, though...don't know his birth time.

He also has a bit of a speech impediment, in that he seems to think faster than he can talk, and his words kind of get slurred together. It can be difficult to understand him.

I can't find it - there's 4 "good" aspects, & one Mercury Square Mars.

Could it have come from a Sun Conj Mercury, Mercury Sextile Asc, or Mercury Conj MC?

I don't see how Merc Sq Mars could do it, but I suppose it could ...

Chrissy - people with Asperger's or other forms of autism, or similar conditions like dyslexia, dyspraxia, fragile X and "small brain" syndrome, all tend to exhibit "echolalia" or mimicking sounds and words, even when there's no conscious meaning to or understanding of those sounds. In AS, this is usually when the child in young, before 5, but because AS is a high-functioning form of autism, we tend to grow out of that and develop more sophisticated behaviors, like cognitive rehearsal or obsessive interests. Echolalia and cogitive rehearsal both qualify as what is called "stimming" or "neurological stimulation" which also include what might like like "tics" to others, like hand flapping, rocking, or other repeatative motor movements. Why austistic stim is debated, but most Aspie will say it's a way to rid themselves of excess mental energy and anxiety produced by our hyperactive brains. I don't know too much about Tourrette's (except a friend's son died of it at a very young age), but it's concievable that it is too a realted condition and would have similar traits.

Lioneye - your dad probably isn't crazy, but likely either AS, or another form of high-functioning autism, or even simply dyslexic, as cognitive rehearsal and problem connecting thought to speech (sometimes called cognitive dyspaxia) are common to those conditions. I slur and mispronounce words all the time - I'm very self-conscious of it because of my AS I can hear words the right way in my head, and know what I want to say, but when I go to speak, god knows how it actually will come out.

People with AS/autism tend to have very high mental activity too, so we do tend to think faster than we can speak or write, which gets extremely frustrating sometimes. Many of us consider thought our "primary" language and speech a "secondary" language as the two aren't as easily connected in the AS brain as in a neurotypical brain. In fact, I personally found speaking so counterintuitive as a child I would often just refuse to speak at all. Thankfully I'm a Gemini, so that need to communicate to others eventually overtook me, and I became more accustom to speaking despite my discomfort with it.

Speaking of people seeming to be crazy, when I was younger and little less conscious of my congitive rehearsal behaviors, it wouldn't be uncommon to see me in ap ublic place carrying on a converstaion with myself, complete with facial and hand gestures. I try to do this now more in private, as I notice it makes other people a bit uncomfortable. Nowadays, I don't mind doing it in the car, cos people who pull up besides you now just assume you're speaking on a cell via a headset or soemthing. LOL. I should just wear a headset attached to a nonworking cell around so I can do this in public without people thinking I'm off my meds.

wow. all this stuff about Asperger's Syndrome. i saw you were discussing it in another thread, but i didn't know what it was. now that i do, wow - it sounds pretty much like me. i'm painfully shy and have been diagnosed with anxity disorder. i often "talk" to myself in my head, but when i do, i am the other person as well. like, i will say what i would say in the conversation and just "hear" what the other person is saying and respond again with my response. sometimes i do it outloud - mostly just the part i am speaking. sometimes it's all in my head, but i find my lips moving an awful lot. i also laugh and make facial expressions just like i was in a normal conversation.
i also swear i am dislexic. i'm horrible at math and spelling. i look at math and can not compute. something is literally blocking it. it was interesting what was said about thinking and speaking being hard to put together. i think so fast (mercury in gem.) and literally lose what i am thinking before it comes out. i can write beautiful poetry in my head, but it goes so, so, fast that i can't write it down and am lost. i always wanted to write a book, but can't seem to find the concentration to do it. i wish i could just transfer the thoughts.....
when i was younger i was very quiet and am still scared of social situations. when i am in them i go mute and don't talk. when i am comfortable, it seems to disapear though.
what does anyone think about this? could it be Asperger's Syndrome? or was i correctly diagnosed with anxiety disorder with perhaps a mild case of undiagnosed dislexia? any opinions would be greatly appreciated. i don't know anything about Asperger's other than what was mentioned in this post - so if i am way off, please set me straight.

gemini nymph -

oh, yes, echolalia is common in people with TS. it was so weird to me to even read that word, to see that someone else KNEW what it meant! i did not know it was part of AS, too. people with TS often exhibit what is called copralalia, as well, but i don't have that. also, ADD is common. i have been diagnosed with both dyslexia and OCD in addition to TS. TS essentially involves the inhibitory center of the brain, which is where the rocking back and forth, the echolalia, the motor and other vocal tics come in. it sounds like AS and TS are neurologically related, somehow.

i think it's quite likely my talking to myself is probably more neurologically related (obsessive-compulsive behavior) than astrologically related, but it's interesting to analyze our aspects and see which ones might be associated, somehow.

sincerely,
chrissy

Oh I do this all the time. Even more now since I'm away at school, and living by Myself. I'm prone to just saying random words like at the end of a thought, a few words will pop out! I don't do this in public unless I do something stupid like trip or any other myriad of stupid things I do. I always mummer "it's ok, you're a clutz, but that's OK".

I talk to imaginary - or real people in my head a lot of the time, mostly imaginary men (!) Apparently out loud I say "mmm, mmm, mmm" and people ask me why I'm doing it. I have to lie!
Well, Mercury doesn't square my Mars, but it semi-sextiles my Mars. My Neptune is in my 3rd house - so we've got Mercurial influences allied to illusions...

well, looked up Asperger's Syndrome for more information and i'm pretty sure i don't have it. sometimes it would be nice if you could put a name to your idiocyncracies. i've been diagnosed with other things in the past, and i thought it might be worth a look.

as for what i said about my terrible, terrible, absolutely horrendous spelling - it still stands. sorry guys. you'll just have to deal with it.

I have conversations in my head too, complete with facial expressions and gestures. I must look insane while I'm doing it, but luckily I've only been caught a few times. I also laugh randomly a lot because my hyperactive mind is always remembering funny things I've heard of conversations I've had. I think I have more of a social life with my brain than I do with real people!
