hi everyone!! i was recently asked to do a research paper for my english class at university, the topic being anything i picked so long as i had an opinion on it and that opinion was arguable. so naturally i chose astrology, since it was the first thing to come to my mind, and also because it's one of my favourite subjects in the world.so i went up to my english teacher after class and said ' professor, i want to do my research paper on astrology, my opinion being that it is a valid science and art'. he smiled, raised his virgo eyebrows in critical appraisal (i'm pretty sure he's a virgo,or at least has heavy virgo influence in his charts) and said 'and how are you going to prove that?' i smiled back and said 'well,i'm going to use numerous books and websites as secondary research material, and maybe take a few well-known public figures and show how accurately they potray their sun sign charecteristics'. 'sounds ineteresting' was his answer. so i wrote up the proposed topic and included another one of my brilliant uranus ideas in it. and that idea was to draw up a questionnare on attitudes towards love, money, family, etc and get people (many people) of different sun signs to fill it up, then divide it into twelve sections (according to the sun sign of course) and show how most people will tend to possess 8 out of 10 charecteristics of their sun sign.this questionnaire was what caught my eng prof's interest the most.'i really like your idea of the questionnaire you are going to use' he said, 'because i'd like to see you prove it' he ended with a smile. i smiled back, but inwardly my aries ascendant was already bristling with indignation at his skepticism.but my aries asc and sag moon also love challenges, and this certainly was one!and here's where you all come in my fellow knowflakes...i can't do this alone,i need help!what do i need help with?well i was thinking my knowflake friends could help me think up questions for the questionnaire...and also help me out by filling it in when i post it on the web . it's all in the name of astrology my friends!i hope i'm not asking too much so...looking forward to your responses..love n peace... -Gooober p.s. i've also posted this topic on two other forums 'free astrology course' and 'for the pilgrim's progress', just to mak esure no one misses it..hope randall doesn't mind.. ------------------ the rain goes pitter patter, pitter patter.. my brain is all in a scatter... you don't mind? then i guess it won't matter ;) IP: Logged |

Well - you certainly picked one of THE most (for all eternity) arguable topics...I've got to ask, will the instructor allow you to make the argument by intercepting it with another question? Such as, "prove it's NOT real" - So many things are really left up to a person's individual chart, don't you think? And you're dealing with some incredible alchemy, so good luck on it. Keep us posted. IP: Logged |

hmmmm......well, as far as your questions go, i would be careful the way you word them. for instance, it is common for a person to be oblivious to their "bad" characteristics. so, you might want to ask if a person is stable if they are a taurus sun, as opposed to stubburn. i can just picture a taurus saying "me, stubburn? never!" i know lind said something about this in love signs. something about how a gemini will grin with glee if you call them changable, but a scorpio will glare you down if you call them the same thing.i'm sure you can make the questionaire so that you are guarenteed to get a correct repsonse from a specific sun sign. i've studied statistics in school and have done a few polls and quetionaires. people manipulate them all the time. so, my quesion to you is, is it ethical to do this in order to ensure a correct response, or is it perfectly acceptable. it's up to you and the way you do it. are you doing it just to prove your prof. wrong? on the other hand, it might be easier to prove your point if you ask someone about their spouses/someone they know well. they will be more inclined to say a resounding "YES, that is so them" rather than a person who is answering about themselves. it's hard to see ourselves sometimes. i wish you good luck and i'll be thinking about some quesions for you. hopefully some others can come up with some and i'll get back to you if i think of any good ones. it is interesting. with all of the experts on here, i'm sure they could come up with some fail proof ones. p.s. i've done an astrology paper for college before. the prof. was cool about it and actually made me tell him about his sign after class one day! he was an aqua. ask this prof. if he is a virgo. it might make him stand up and listen if you are right!IP: Logged |

Hey puppyblew,I think you had a valid and interesting point about some people being more able to complete the questionnaire if they are answering about somebody else, other than themsElf. I remember when I first read a book on Enneagrams (9 different personality types) I found it so easy to pick my family and friends but not so easy to pick myself. Gooober, one piece of advice that might help in designing the questionnaire is to repeat the same question in a couple of places throughout the questionnaire, only change the wording slightly each time. Then you can average out the response to that line of questioning. Good luck with it. purple_scorp IP: Logged |
