Did you ever notice that verbal descriptions of astrology almost always are generalizations, and are often wrong (esp sun signs) There's always an exception.

To me the only way that astrology is accurate is in a vibration. A vague energy that people of different signs give off, for example air and fire have a "faster" vibration, whereas earth and water have a "slower" vibration. Its not something you can really put into words very well, but its something you can feel and sense. Sometimes you just know someone is watery, or airy, its just in their movements, the tone of their voice, the look in their eyes, and their general presence.

Saying that scorpios are ALWAYS intense is bound to be wrong eventually, or that libras are always charming, as i know many people of these signs are are not intense or are not charming.

This being said, what techniques do y'all use to guess people's sun sign? How do you penetrate through the ascendant and especially guess tricky signs like pisces or virgos that tend to look like other signs?

Yeah that's always somewhat bothered me...especially since I know a Pisces who is so far from sensitive or compassionate, an Aries who is not very outgoing, and well most people wonder how I ever got pegged as a Virgo in the first place.

There'll probably be replies with people claiming that you have to look at other aspects in a person's chart, but yet we still have to deal with the vague, generalized sun sign interpretations anyway.

i think essentially the basic traits are spot-on, but these characteristics can change depending on nuture.

cancerians are steretypically meant to be a sentimental sign. as a child i was sooo careless, always losing stuff i really liked and it would hurt...then i stopped placing importance on things.

and it isnt solely the sun sign traits you see....its all of the planets acting in accord, right?

For me, predicting a sun sign is a totally intuitive activity. Except that some would argue intuition involves just really quick analysis and reasoning and all that other stuff but it's so speedy we aren't aware of it (hey, I've got mercury in aqua, ya know lighting bolts and all that jazz)...so maybe I'm unconsciously doing all of that and it just feels like intuition (whatever that is). But I know what you mean, Blue, about the vibration. I mean I could look at someone and notice that they are very tidy and clean, maybe a little anal about this..and I would want to say that they are a Virgo, using sun sign stereotypes. But sometimes this will happen and I will get this sense of what their sun sign actually is..."this person smells like pisces to me". And I don't know where it's coming from. I also find that there are certain sun signs that have such powerful effects, no matter how different the person may seem from stereotypical descriptions of their sign, or how masked their fiery sun may be, for example, by earthy planets..that sun will shine through. I find Aries, Scorpio, Aquarius and Cancer have this...no matter how they act, I can usually see that sun peeking through their facade.

Just throwing this out there- Norah Jones is an Aries (!!) .......THAT is one that I wouldn't have been able to guess in a million years. But then again, maybe it would be different if I met her in person...

Yeah i was surprised about norah jones too - I would have had her pegged as dreamy languid pisces or cancer... maybe she's quite ambitious and pushy under that soft exterior.. Lol

Whiterabbit:

Yeah i have a very similar experience wiht signs, I will ignore facts if I get a "sense" off a person. Sometimes my best guesses are made by noticing that the person looks like or talks like someone i know of the same sign. Overall however, whenever I get a lightning bolt hunch its 99% right, which is why I only guess now if I get that intuition.

If it wasn't for the my and others ability to gues signs, I don't think I'd believe in astrology, but sometimes it just makes sense...like Jung said "people are like a fine wine, they take the qualities of the time of year they are born."

I also can easily guess aries, scorpio, and cancer. I think mars energy penetrates through any exterior. I can often get caps by their silence broken by zany humor. Pisces is impossible.

i bet norah has her venus in taurus.

she does look like an aries to me however but her voice is taurean. infact, she looks like a bull. could be late aries.

her videos are pretty elementary and her style is child-like. listen to her lyrics closely. they are deep, yet earthy, yet simple. i wonder what her chart looks like.

she also fell in love with a much older man (her sax player?) and is daughter of a very prominent indian satar player who was with the beatles if i recall.

ok i was wrong, norah jones has a pisces venus (which is what I thought initially but changed it)

here is her birth info, based on a virgo asc. i chose virgo because she seems private, uncomfortable..or um,, nervous.

(i don't have her time of birth)

Sun Aries 09°33'46 08 direct
Moon Taurus 15°53'20 09 direct
Mercury Pisces 28°12'16 08 retrograde
Venus Pisces 02°04'20 07 direct
Mars Pisces 24°24'09 07/8 direct
Mars is technically near the end of house 7 and is interpreted in house 8.
Jupiter Cancer 29°02'35 11 stationary (D)
Saturn Virgo 08°23'19 01 retrograde
Uranus Scorpio 20°29'36 03 retrograde
Neptune Sagittarius 20°28'51 04 retrograde
Pluto Libra 18°05'06 02 retrograde
True Node Virgo 17°20'24 01 retrograde

Its all intuition.

I am not all that surprised by Norah being an Aries... look at her eyes.

Yeah, I hate those generalizations - they should at least say, "the archetypal Virgo", or "the archetypal Pisces".

It's like Nietzsche said, the most zealous members of a cause, who cannot help but exaggerate their point at every turn, often end up drawing more suspicion than they dispell.

moonbaby -

Something about this nature vs. nurture argument. "Nurture" is said to be a mere part of the natural birthchart. Supposedly, the fourth house, along with other elements, in your natal chart, includes all those influences which relate to upbringing and external circumstances.

Briefly - all I know is over time you become more intuitive to the "language" of astrology, and therefore, more intuitive over Signs and such over time.
