Hi I understand that your rising sign is all about appearances, and how you look to others, but does it also give you 'issues' related to that sign that you have to deal with in your life?

Mine is in cancer and I am always dealing with family problems!!! I feel suffocatingly tied to my family and if it weren't for constant feelings of guilt I would have left long ago. My parents have always been overprotective and restrictive and I've always resented it. Even now as a 'grown-up' I am still bending to their ways!
I blame my ascendant for this! I wishi I had been given a rising that gives me more freedom! Like Libra or something.

Is it just me that feels that my cancer rising sign is to do with it? I just feel sometimes that it gives me an added burden in my life which I could have done without!

Does anyone else feel similarly about their ascendant?

Moonshine,
Depending on what your sun and moon signs are the rising sign(or Ascendant)can work harmoniously or disharmoniously with them. Your chart might be more tuned into family relations and other similar subjects so that might be why you feel the strong emotional ties to your family despite how you feel otherwise. I don't believe that the ascendant alone could be that powerful in one's chart unless there are other weak points. Of course I could be wrong Its important to remember though, we make our own paths as well, the stars only guide us so far.

Although my ascendant is squared my sun (I have a LeoSun/ScorpAsc) I don't really feel as if its a burden but sometimes it is strange.

moonshine -

That's a good question which pops up often, and which we are all constantly learning about and observing firsthand - then sharing what we observe and experience firsthand.

If you feel like it, include your birthdate, time of birth, and place of birth as some of us WILL take the time to take a further look for you, and help you grasp this all until it's second nature.

For example, you may have more Cancer in your Chart, or you might have a Sun or Moon Conjunct your Ascendant. Things like that which will make that Cancer Asc more powerful. And there may be other indications in your Chart which will provide information as to why you may be struggling with it, which may not have anything to do with the Asc standing alone.

If you've read some of the posts, you know that anything Cancer in one's Natal is going through a LOT of stress due to Transiting Saturn being in Cancer, plus Saturn being the opposite energy of the Moon which rules Cancer.

Transiting Saturn in Cancer is currently at 25 degrees. So if your Asc is in a later degree, you may be beginning to feel it's impact, or it's influence as it walks out the door.

I have a Cancer Moon in the later degrees, so I'm totally with you as far as the sucky mucky internal chaos. With your Asc, it may give you trouble in coming across to others as you really wish to be. It may be a test to help you realize what's really important in how others perceive you. It's best to take this Transit EASY... the more Mutable in your attitude, the more you'll be able to go with the flow, understanding it won't last forever.

Easier said than done - I KNOW !!

Oh thank you so much, I would greatly appreciate any insight you could give me:

My birth details are:
6th September 1971
12.37am
Calcutta, India

I don't think the current transits are making too much difference to me as the situation is kind of a life-long thing, and getting people to see me as me, and not through the eyes of my parents (esp my mother) has always been hard for me.

Many thanks in advance!

Actually- I don't think that a Cancer Asc would be the mere reason why you are facing many issues that are familial. when it comes t family problems, i think it would be more specific to look at your Moon sign ad its aspects because usually a Cancer ASc would be an indiation of a happy childhood or closeness to family. Here's what I've found. If you have:
1.your Moon in an Earth sign(especially Virgo) or in strong aspect to Saturn or Pluto- you may find yourself feeling overburdened by family ties(Saturn deals wih restrictions)or even power struggles.
2.Capricorn/Saturn in your 1st or 4th house- you may feel as if you grew up too early because you had to assume responsibilities prematurely, hence the need to be independent and to "leave the nest" so to speak.

Moonshine, a Libra Asc. isnt the best thing in the world to wish for. I dont think your family probs are because of the Asc.; AJ is probably right about the Asc. aspects having more to do with it.
I AM a libra Asc. and have the exactly same problems. My family conflicts have included but are not limited to: arranged vs. by-choice marriage, choosing my career, being allowed to work, being allowed to have certain friends, being allowed to debate/argue, being allowed to be part of social groups, and endless other things.
My mother is a single parent and I always get guilt trips about wanting to assert/express myself.
Libra Asc. definitely doesn't provide freedom....what it does do is that it makes you more friendly, argumentative (NOT a good thing when u want to get along and be easygoing), and certainly more appealing to the opposite sex (the one good thing I like about this rising )

Air signs or air rising signs make you WANT freedom more badly. They dont guarantee you or give you that freedom in life.

Which, by the way, is WORSE when you feel trapped. Because then you have all this air influence in you wanting to break free and move about and you can't.

The affect of your Ascendant depends a great deal on the planetary ruler and how it is placed and aspected...so for a Cancer Rising...that is your Moon.
I have a Capricorn Rising and nobody could tell me that it isn't a major influence. Many regard the Ascendant as the "mask" you wear when relating to others. With a Capcricorn Risng I often take a reserved, conservative approach toward interacting with others. I have Aquarius intercepted by the Placidus method...so...when I really know someone and I'm at ease...I express the more eccentric side of my nature.
I have often felt that my Ascendant is something I have to continually work on...trying to bring out the best of the Capricorn traits.
Perhaps there is a lot of subconscious stuff to work through concerning your interpretation of family matters and how they interact with you.
Good luck.

Secret Garden: sorry, I only said Libra because certain celebrities I have read about plus my ex-boyfriend who all have libra rising seemed to have a lot of freedom when they were kids, so I kind of had that in mind when I wrote it. All the conflicts you mentioned are exactly the same things I have had to deal with all my life! I guess it must be harder being an air sign and being stifled, but I also have a pressing need for freedom (sun=virgo, moon=pisces) which I guess isnt typical of my sign(s) but that must be down to other aspects I guess. Im not knowledgeable enough to analyse my chart yet! BTW: where are you from?

Archer: I dont think Kolkata was affected that much actually, at least my mum rang India when it happened and they (my family) were all fine - they are too far away from where it happened. Tamil Nadu & Andaman/Nicobar islands are the worst affected areas it seems. But i guess you knew that already

Thanks, I dont really understand the aspects, from looking at my chart (in astrology.com) I dont think I have any aspects around the ascendant, the nearest planet is saturn in gemini which is sitting right on the cusp of the 11th and 12th house - do you think that might be doing something?!

Moonshine -

OK - The desire to want to do more to please others, or be of service to others also comes about through Virgo/6th House influences. We can also look at your Cancer/Moon/4th House influences which would relate to your home and family, although the Virgo/6th House is also interested in all things domestic.

You have a Virgo Sun, Venus & Pluto, but they are in your 3rd House of communication as well as siblings. Here is one place you may feel like "breaking out" of.

Your Moon is in Pisces, which is another Sign which enjoys doing for others, or which finds difficulty in creating boundaries. But it's in your 9th House, and until you get out there in the world of knowledge and/or travel, you will not feel the full potential of your Moon in Pisces. So there's another influence making you want to "break out".

Your 4th House, which is ruled by Moon/Cancer, and is all about family, has Uranus & Libra in there, both are a freedom-loving Planet & Sign - so there's yet another indication making you feel like "breaking out". Also, slow-moving Jupiter is currently Transiting your 4th House so THIS COULD BE YOUR LUCKY BREAK!

Your 6th House is currently being Transited by Mercury, Venus & Pluto - so you very much want to communicate your appreciation for love, and you will be trying to do this for a while since slow-moving Pluto is there to, which rules "transformation".

Also, your Mars is in Aquarius, more freedom-loving and being of service to your friends, and your Saturn is in Gemini, which may sometimes give people the impression that your goals are not always practical, but ignore that. You need change and variety, and that's just how you are. You'd be a great writer, I suspect. Writing childrens' books or working with children.

Finally, your Mercury is in Leo which means, you tend to ROAR when you express yourself, and you should roar often, or else all the energy builds up until it comes off a little too strong to others. So regularly release that energy by communicating often, not holding so much in.

Your Mars in Leo is in the 2nd House, so you'll want to focus on this particular placement A LOT, as it will play an important role in your work or career. Combine that with your Midheaven (also career) in dreamy Pisces, and I can see where your lively imagination can inspire people a great deal.

The important thing is to keep all these energies flowing. Take long walks around nature, talk to the trees, insects, and birds. Keep your chi flowing. Do meditation each day, and don't hold too much in. Express yourself! Learn! Travel! Break the traditional family mold! Take it day by day.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you think.

AJ thank you so much for your help and analysis of me! Do you know you are so spot on on some of your observations? I'm pretty impressed!

I didn't realise I had so many freedom-loving planets/aspects. I thought it was down to horrible aspects in my chart that were tying me down. So I guess I would still feel the same way if i had more "liberal" parents who'd always allowed me to do as I pleased. I've always thought my moon in pisces made me a pushover!

Its so funny what you said about writing childrens books. I have always wanted to write and currently Im in the middle of writing a short story which is in the style of a fairy tale! I havent decided yet whether its for children or adults - it depends which way it turns out in the end, lol.

You're also right about the mercury in leo - i do have a tendency to hold my thoughts in (years of practice I guess), and I'm always the quiet one in a group, too shy to say anything, but when I feel strongly about something i think i come off too strongly! So i have to watch that I guess.

Is there anywhere I can get more info bout my transits you mentioned, particularly the Jupiter one?

Thank you very much! You're a really good astrologer, you've said so much that I can really relate to in real terms. I appreciate it.
