I've been wondering if inertia without a feeling of purpose tends to be a Virgo trait (although I can probably chalk this up to my Saturn transits as well). Any other Virgos just don't do anything if they feel like what they are doing serves no purpose, or even if your life feels meaningless? Do you go into a state of stasis/inertia until something comes along that serves some sort of purpose for you? I seem to not be able to function until I feel like whatever I do has meaning/purpose behind it. I seriously become this rock, sometimes for MONTHS, going absolutely nowhere. (This must be where the interpretation of Virgos as stick-in-mud comes from)

Also if you'd like, discussion about feeling like a fish out of water is good too, as I seem to get that a lot and it just makes inertia/lack of motivation worse.

I constantly feel like I have to be being productive. like I have to be putting back in to the world. I mean I think I would live in a car if that meant I felt like I was being useful over living luxury and feeling like I was doing something that would never make a dent in the well being of future generations.

I COMPLETELY agree!

I have this big deal where I don't like going anywhere unless I'm going TO somewhere. I like to have a reason and purpose for everything I do!
But I thought that was down to the Capricorn in me...

It was that way when I was younger (relative term), but now at 64, I have learned to just relax and enjoy life.

Yes, as a sixth house Sun I only feel comfortable with someone if that person's purpose and mine are linked. Usually I can tell if it's going to work out or not when the purpose dies. I have to have that doing, not dwelling feeling.

The goal with me is to let the purpose find me, not the other way around, the Sixth house is the adolescent, shy but social. I get uncomfortable with large groups of people, but I let it happen anyway and then I find myself with inspiration again.

yeah I really can't do something unless my heart is truly in it. But if I HAVE to do something, I will try to do a good job and feel ambitious about it and all that, but it's a struggle.

The way I feel about it is that my whole "being productive" thing, is a life goal rather than a daily one. I can happily go on a trip just to go, or go out driving just because I feel like it & not intend to be going anywhere at all.
I love life, so I think I can enjoy it pretty well. I just want my whole life in the whole to be useful, but I don't feel like I have to be busy all of the time.

funny...what we are all talking about is the inability to RELAX...

"i've got nothing to do, but i will catch up on my reading...."

"i need to go for a walk because i feel out of shape...."

"on my day off i'll do research for that overseas trip i might take someday.."

cmon, fellow Virgos, how similar are these statements to the things you tell yourself?

goddess forbid, we relax... i dont know the meaning of the word? our Mercury stressed minds always have to be gnawing away at something... whether it be plans or pains.

so, i have noticed, i cant enjoy relaxing because it doesnt have purpose.... ignoring the fact that our bodies are not machines and we NEED downtime...

(but has this ever happened to you? so you DO allow yourself downtime, to still the ever chattering Mercury in your head....and suddenly EARTH takes over and the dishes havent been done for days, you havent changed your clothes in days, and theres no food in the house....ah, intertia....)

*sigh*

lets indulge in just a moment of self pity, fellow Virgos...just a second, and then i have errands to run...

we are so conflicted, earth battling the brain.... drawn tight and worn with the nervous energy of a ruling planet we just cant sit down and have coffee with, comfortably...where is the promise of Vulcan?

love ya all

MK

Odd, MK as that is totally not what I am talking about. I've had more than enough boring downtime and am sick of not having anything to do, I've relaxed to the point where I'm sick of relaxing.

I am talking about things like working a mindless 9-5 job with no meaning, spending all your free time having to do menial chores that in the end you won't even remember because they simply weren't important, all the time gobbled up by refreshing a message board a thousand times for hours or sitting in front of the TV to the point where your brain starts turning to Jell-O. I'm talking about existentialism basically, not the Virgo need to always be doing things which seems more like people's personal neurosis rather than an overgeneralization of the Virgo sun.

Oh well forget it. I must not have worded something right in my original post.

Virgos need to serve, and feel like they are serving someone who needs them, or a needy cause. If you aren't serving, you aren't living. If you aren't working you need to volunteer somewhere

I must be an oddball Virgo because I so do not feel the desire to serve others. If anything, I want people to serve ME.
...But of course that could just be my narcissistic Leo Moon talking.

Virgotaurustaurus i understand what you are reffering to. And i think that Virgos are one of the signs most susceptable to this kind of spiritual crisis. As Virgos i think we automatically feel guilty if our life isn't serving some greater purpose. I have felt that a lot, this sense of, man i should be doing something that really has some great meaning to it. I think the way to deal with that is to really look inside yourself and see what it is that makes you happy and then use that towards a greater purpose. My thing was i feel happy when i can help people with their health problems and help them to feel better. I realized that was what makes me happy, so now i am in school studying Medical Assiting, and at some point after that i will seek out a practice that combines conventional and alternative medicine, to better serve my life's purpose. At any rate it just requires a lot of soul serching, which may take some time. It doesn't neccessarily happen overnight.Hang in there.

VTT ~
I'm not a Virgo, but I have Mars in Virgo, so I hope I can pop in to this topic....
Do you have a hobby or two that you enjoy? Rather than have my mind become that jello you spoke of, I make jewelry -- I create something unique. It's not particularly productive, but it fulfills my need to create SOMETHING, anything.
Many of us work those 9-5 jobs, some jobs are better than others, but they're not fun, that's why they called them "work". Someone else is reaping all the benefit of my sweat and brainpower. But I never went to college "so I could get a good job" like the folks said, so I have to accept the hand I dealt myself. And I am lucky enough to be able to take classes thru my work to inprove my education in my field, so I'm not really stuck in a dead-end like many people are.
I don't think feeling a lack of purpose is a particularly Virgo trait -- I think many people feel that way from time to time. I ask myself "What's the use?" about once a week. Menial chores aren't important, but they are necessary, and I sure wish I had someone else to wash those dirty dishes and clothes for me, but that's the price we pay for having to exist in this physical body and take care of its needs, n'est-ce pas? We are eternal spirits and we're all down here in SchoolRoom Earth enduring this bad camping trip, learning our lessons so we can graduate. Pat yourself on the back just for having the guts to incarnate again! Tomorrow could be a better day, the day when things turn around and start coming together, and you DO feel purpose again....

Great reply AZALASH!! I will remember that when i start getting down on myself for not being perfect. Virgos put a lot of pressure on themselves to either be perfect or to be constantly achieving.Sometimes we just need somebody to say something just like that to make us realize we deserve credit for just being ourselves.Thanks a lot!!

VTT, don't feel that it is just virgos, I agree with Azalaksh. Many times I have had what I like to call the 'Prufrock syndrome', if you've read "The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock" by Eliot you can relate to what I'm saying, I'm posting the parts I relate to the most down here:

"Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.

For I have known them all already, known them all:—
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
So how should I presume?

I should have been a pair of ragged claws
Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.

Should I, after tea and cakes and ices,
Have the strength to force the moment to its crisis?
But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed,
Though I have seen my head [grown slightly bald] brought in upon a platter,
I am no prophet—and here’s no great matter;
I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,
And I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker,
And in short, I was afraid.

No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—
Almost, at times, the Fool.

I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me."

Awesome quote! I really like that stuff, but have never read (I presume) T.S. Eliot (please correct me if I am wrong).
You know VTT, I just tore myself away from this forum, cleaned the catbox and took out the garbage since it's Garbage Day tomorrow. And I looked up and saw the Moon, a few days away from full, and a path of stars and the Milky Way laid out across the sky. And I stood outside there without a coat for a few minutes in the 31-degree night and thought about how lucky I am to be alive, to see another bright moonshiney night, and know that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. Then I went back inside to start the dishes, and rewarded myself for having accomplished that by coming back here to share ideas and thoughts.

True we have to serve someone, but only one someone, and most Virgos need mental stimulation more than anything so look to your friends for that. If you are spending time with a real Do Do then you are going to suffer! The guy you are with can be great looking but if he's an idiot then it's not going to work,

Look for smart guys, talkers, anyone who isn't overly sensitive, then you are happy,

I also think Virgos like to hang out with men more than women for some reason? keeps the inertia away since men are in general, more physically active, do, don't dwell, that kind of thing.

I have noticed I am much happier talking to a person who is patronizing me if it's not boring,

Virgos can talk to anyone, but you need to feel appreciated mentally, not just physically,
Don't ever underestimate your need for stimulation,

Natasha

virgotaurustaurus -

GREAT TOPIC!!

I've just been reflecting upon the exact same thing! I have my Mercury, Mars & Neptune in Scorpio in the 6th House, PLUS, Venus & Pluto in Virgo in the 4th.

So ...

I really put a lot into my relationships.

BR I so relate to what you say, my husband who is virgo sun serves so well and he admits that is his role in life, Ive also had so many Virgo female friends in the past, and one of them even used to make my bed for me when I was aged 30!!! I suppose the thing they have to watch out for is that they dont get taken advantage. I notice when I do something thoughtful for my husband, he seems so grateful - aahh the server, humble, honest and pure - long live the Virgin love to all xxx
