nove- did you grow up around here, or are you from somewhere else... most people that are from the area tend to not like it as opposed to those that are used to something else... My experience anyway.

Born and raised in this county. :-P

Except the one year I lived in Tampa. Haha, sometimes I wish I still lived there. Then I hear about a hurricane whipping through the area on the news, and I'm happy I don't. :-P

(although traffic is getting to be a b****)

Hasn't it always been like that? :-P Haha

I don't have anything against Nashville for those that like it. When I was there it was between 1991 and 1994. I had come from southern California. It was total culture shock. There's not a lot of diversity. There is noticable racism. The music I like(d) wasn't being played on the radio. It was tough to establish rapport with people who'd never been out of the area. The kids didn't have a whole lot of things to do, so they resorted to drinking and drugs. In the Brentwood area, all the kids conformed to some area idea of how they should be (that may be the result of wealth in the area).

Exactly. I go to the arts school in Nashville (I dunno if you know about NSA, it was only founded in 1993), and life there is drugs. Hahaha, I come from a pretty sheltered childhood so it was a humongous shock. I used to live near Brentwood. On Edmondson Pike. It was better than this area I live in now.

Although, I imagine the diversity is probably better than it was 10-15 years ago, but still. :-P It's hard to hold racist tendencies (or maybe easier for some?) when you go to a school that's just about 50/50 in race. I guess. But the schools here are absolutely pathetic save HFA (If you've ever been to downtown Nashville, you know where Hume-Fogg is :-P) and MLK. It's just pathetic.

My parents are very happy with their decision to live there, so it may have just been my age at the time. Still, in subsequent visits while in the Navy I've always told myself, "This will be my last trip here." Amazing the emotion you can attach to a place.

My mother doesn't even like it here anymore. She's the one who had the bright idea to move here. Probably because there was family here, and it was hard for my father to work construction in Chicago. Eh, I won't be sad to leave. College can't come soon enough. :-P

Well clearly everyone has a different experience. It is not my ultimate goal to live here much longer. I just think that anywhere you live, you are gonna find positives and negatives. Personally, I am drawn to the desertous areas- (my native american roots) South Florida has a special charm that I love too, but yeah, the threat of weather disaster stops me too.

Nove, I have never heard of the arts school. Where is it located? (not Nashville Academy is it?) Maybe you should get involved in one of the Unity churches or something. How old are you? Male or Female? I think it is sad that the kids have nothing to do and so they resort to drugs. Is that different in other cities??? I mean, I dont see how it would be any different. So many people are just feeling empty these days no matter what city they live in...

When I begin to feel empty, one thing I love to do is go talk to Ackbar at Galactic Gateways on Nolensville Rd- been there?

AG, yeah I know Brentwood- lots of money and status stuff- as well as a lot of other areas of Nashville. (green hills, bell meade) I have seen Nashville's racism problems change over the last several years, but it is in the bible south, so...

I just keep adding my positive thoughts to the collective and looking for change...

I wanna go to Chicago. Hah. I want to live there. I love Chicago. It's so much more fun than Nashville. The only good points I can really find about Nashville are Centennial Park, Sportsplex, the downtown library, and...my school. Eh, I guess Opry Mills is okay, too. But it's just a mall.

NSA is on Foster Avenue. It's off Thompson Lane and Murfreesboro Road.

Lol, I'm actually an atheist. :-P So no Unity churches for me. I'm not one who partakes in drugs, either. I know people who do, and if they want to, fine. They're screwing themselves up, though, and I've told several that's how I feel about it.

As far as I know it, they don't do them because they feel empty inside. The kids at my school do them because of the rush it gives them. And I guess that's when a lot of the visual arts students actually do their work. When under the influence. I think it's silly, but whatever. A lot of Theatre students (I'm not one of them) use drugs to help them loosen up before performance. It seems that pot is really the most common thing for it.

Lmao, I'm a fifteen year old guy. I have things to do, and they don't involve drugs. Usually it involves books. I'm far too introverted for my own good. Hah. Nope, I've never been to Galactic Gateways.

Just my two cents on drugs:

Growing up in southern California I don't ever recall being tempted or peer-pressured into taking drugs. Even the smokers in high school were seen as outcasts by most. Not that drugs don't exist there. They do. I have a cousin who's a pothead there, but my experience is that even drinking was far less prevalent than I've seen in places where there's less for a young person to do. There's literally SO much a person can do there.

Plus there are a ton of enormous Christian churches down there, which may account for a bit of a more moral atmosphere.

Also, personal and artistic expression was pretty high there. Everyone seemed to be ok with however a person chose to be as long as they weren't hurting anyone.

---------------------------

Nove,

What I've seen of Chicago was pretty cool. It's a big gang city, and you certainly have to watch where you go, but otherwise it's a pretty modern sophisticated city (in my opinion).

Oh, and a Unitarian church, as I recently learned, isn't a traditional christian church. It's more like a New Age church. Could be interesting.

Crystelle,

If I were there I'd go with you to those places. They sound interesting. It's weird to hear all these old street names. Kinda cool, but I can't remember exactly where they're at. I don't have that kind of memory.

I love Chicago. Most of my family lives there. :-P

Eh, It still revolves around the belief in God. I don't share it.

Well, Nove, I respect the fact that you are independent enough to form your own views and not follow the crowd. I was never really pressured into drugs in my teens either, although I experimented with them in typical capricorn fashion (cautiously and moderately)
Being that you are 15, you are sure to have lots of changes in the way you see things over the next 10 years (and more of course). When I was your age, I wanted to get out of where I was too. You will find that everywhere you go, there is always something better.
Chicago has always been one of my favorite cities to visit (although too cold for me long term). I've always felt safe there (unlike some of the other cities like Atlanta, Seattle, LA, etc.- although I sure loved Seattle in late June (when it wasn't raining! ) So, good choice with Chicago- are you going to college there?

As far as Nashville and openess, I think you guys are right to say that it is definetely got a long way to go in comparison to other areas, especially the west coast. Who knows if it will ever be... but thats why us "more evolved" people need to stick around. It all depends on who you associate yourself with. Wherever you are on a spirit level, you're going to call people of the same frequency. Starting in my early twenties, when I "woke up" I began making friends that thought like I did. It all depends on where you ~ARE~ there are amazing people no matter what city you're in.
